To all w from# may concern lie it known that l, Gnonen E. ldiirieifrnnr, a citizen ot the llnited States, residing at lllney, in the county oilichland and @tate ot llllinois, have invented certain new and useful improvements in ltland-Embroidery Needleaol'f which the following is a specification.
The invention has for an object to eilect improvements in art worl; hand operated needles,such asare used tor turling, and embroidery, and aims to simplify the construction and functioning of such a device, where` by the mamitacture.` manipulation oi: the
device in use, and its operative functions will be improved. lt is a particular aim to provide an improved guard by which the depth of insertion et the needle is limited, to the end that quick adjustment ot the device may be made and fine graduation ot tutting secured,l lt is a most important object of the invention to provide a satisfactory means whereby regularity of the tui'ting may be secured, and the liability ot irregular' feed ol thread obviated. ln this connection, it is an aim oit the invention to provide an improved tension device 'for such use adapted to limit movement of the yarn properly. lt is also a further aim of the invention to enable the use oi' various sizes oil' yarn satisl'actorily, with the same device. A Ylurther important aim of the invention is to provide a construction of needle in which the thread will be liable in a minimum degree to be# come entangled in the lingers ot the operator, means being provided whereby it may readily pass longitudinally through the body of `the needle device. A further important aim is to `provide means whereby needles oit diil'erent sizes may be interchangeably mounted in the device.I so that, in conjunction with the tension of the device, extremely small yarn may be used with the device, as well as large yarn.

'llhere is illustrated a needle device comprising ahandle body 10, which may be formed from sheet metal, having a groove 11 formed in one side thereof, the barrel 10 being ordinarily formed in any customary manner. Upon the barrel there is slidable a sleeve 12, split and having ears 13 formed at one side arranged to be drawn together by a clamp screw 1/1 whereby the sleeve may be tightened upon the barrel to hold it in adjusted position. llrom the sleeve there is extended outwardly an arm 15, having at its outer extremity a needle encircling guard of annular form, and of a size to receive a needle therethrough with considerable space around the needle, the guard being ot' a suitable character to act as a stop against cloth, when a needle is thrust thereinto.
The barrel is reduced at the lower end, as at 17, and has snugly set therein a plug 18 having a socket 19 in the outer end to rei ceive the needle, and provided with a binding screw 2O b-y which the needle may be secured in the socket. The plug may be soldered or otherwise secured in the reduced end of the tube, and is preferably provided with a shoulder Q1 against which the end of the tube may be thrust, to hold the device in proper engaged relation. '1F he plug is formed with a longitudinal channel 22 in one side, inclined inwardly, so that it becomes very much deeper at its upper inner part and rested in the upper part of this channel within the reduced portion oi' the barrel, there is a tube 23, extended axially through the barrel and having a flared end E241 at the upper end. The lower end ot the tube is curved so as to aline with` the channel where it rests therein. A rib 25 is :formed around the outer end oit the plug 153, through which the channel 22 extends. The opposite outer end o1 the barrel is formed with an iuturned annular 'flange 26, at right angles to 'the anis of the barrel, and having a central large opening therethrough, while the tube Q3 is flared so that its edge portion may rest against the flange 26, to which it may be secured by solderor otherwise, as iound desirable. The lower end of the tube 23 will be retained in the channel 22 without special securement at that part, ordinarily. Upon the plug 18, or the lower end of the barrel adjacent the plug, a small boxing 27 is provided, directly over the channel 22 and open at the lower part in line with the channel. In this boxing there is pivoted a lever 28, of the first order, having a lower arm formed with a friction head 29 conforming to the shape el the channel 22 in cross section, and adapted to rest/upon a yarn laid in the channel and t'ed there-- through. The opposite end of the lever 28 lies within the boxing 27, and is borne outwardly by a helical spring 30, seated against the lower reduced end of the barrel 10. The lower end of the lever is caused by the spring to bear inwardly into the channel 22. An adjusting screw 31 is engaged in the boxingso as to bear upon the lever directly opposite the spring and in opposition thereto, and by adjustment ot this screw, the pressure exerted by they head 29 upon a yarn is limited, as may be found desirable. A needle 32 is removably mounted in the socket 19, having a grooved side alined with the channel 22.
vThis construction permits the use of ordinary sewing machine needles for very line yarns, and for larger yarns, sheet metal needles attached to Shanks may be substituted, if desired.
Various details of the structure may be modilied, within the int-ent ol the invention as found desirable, it being possible to torni a spring arm 33 as a continuation of the lever 28 (as shown in Fig. 5). And to avoid necessity for a groove the barrel 10 may be formed with` an outwardly bowed or chanl nelled part 3l at the lower end, immediately adjacent the plug 18 and the lower end of the tube 23 may be set therein, thus locating it outwardly of the plug 18, the construction of the parts being otherwise the same as before described, except that the tube 23 does not require to be curved.
It will be seen that a simple device is pro` vided adapted to be produced readily in an attractive forni, which may be readily operated in the manner usual in the class ot work for which the device is adapted. lt may be produced at a low cost and the Atrict-ion device 29 will obviate the pullin; r back of loops by the resilient action ol the varn, which often occurs in ordinary devices, with very irregular effect, some of the loops being caused to become much shorter than others, and occasional loops being formed quite long.
lVhat is claimed A device of the character described coniprising a barrel, a needle mounting plug engaged in one end thereof, a tube having a flared end exposed through the upper end of the barrel, and eccentric-ally opening through the lower end of the device, and a friction device to engage a yarn` passing from the last named end of the tube to a needle in said plug.
