CEYLON STURDEVANT, 0F CASTLE ROCK, CUIIiOE-J-TDO, ASEQEGNOE TO GEORGE ROBINSON,
. 01E LllftlilbPUE, COLORADO.
CHAIll" FASTENER.
Application filed July 25, 1921. Serial No. 4:87,?18.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that l, Carton i dTURDEX ANT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Castle Rock, in the county of Douglas and State of Colorado, have invented new and useful improvements in Chain Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
My present Ill'lVGlllTiOll has reference to a means for attaching the ends of a skid or other chain. 1
My object is to produce a fastening means for this purpose which shall be of a simple construction, easily and quickly arranged to engagewith the links of a chain, and when so engaged cannot be accidentally removed from the chain. y The foregoing, and other objects which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, may be accomplished by a construction, combination and operative association of parts, such is disclosed by the drawings which accompany and which form part of this specification.
In. the drawings Figure 1 is a view illustrating; the applicationof the improvement.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the i111- provement per se. i
Figure 3 is an approxii'nately central longitudinal sectional view through the improvement.
As disclosed by the drawings, ray improvement contemplates the employment of a body; n'ielnber wh ch is formed of two similarly constructed plates 1-1 respectively. The plates, at one of the ends there of have outwardly directed portions in the nature of cars 2, and the edges of the plates aligning with the inner edges of the ears are notched, as at 3. Between the ears 2 there is pivoted, as at 4 a blade The inner edge of the blade. opposite its pivot is straight, as at 6 and from the said straight portion the said inner edgeof the blade is notched, as at 7. The blade is really in the nature of a Hat plate, providing no sharpened edges and when swung to closed position between the plates that constitute the body, the notch? of the blade is arranged in alignment with the notches 3 of fl t'LClZUFBCl and marketed.
the said body plates. The body plates are held in spaced relation by a spring rod 8. The rod 8, at the end thereof opposite that arranged between the ears is formed with an. eye 9, the said eye being preferably thickened, and passing through the eye and through the body plates 1 is a. pivot member 10. The pivot member has its ends passingthrough eyes 11 in a yoke 12,, the ends of the pivot being flattened, as at 13 against the said. eyes of the yoke. Passing transversely through the body plates 1, at approximately the center thereof is a pin 14. This pin is in contacting engagement with the spring rod 8. and bows the said rod so that the outer or free end thereof, when in contacting engagement with the'straigdit edge 6 of the blade effectively holds the blade in closed position. The notches of the body plates and the notch of the blade provide for the reception of an end or other link 1-5 of a chain.
A construction, as above described, is extreniiely simple, and may be cheaply manu- The spring" effec tively holds the blades in closed position. and while the link may be readily received between the blade and body, the same cannot he acc dentally separated therefrom.
Having described. the invention, l claim 1. A chain fastener comprising a body formed of two spaced plates havinir out-- standing; cars at one end thereof and their edges notched at their said ears, a notched blade pivoted between the cars; a spring rod having: an eye end which is pivoted between the plates near the ends thereof oppo-s te those provided with the cars. and an element passing transversely through the plates ennagrngr the spring rod for rentrally bowinei the same and for causinef the free end of said rod to exert a pressure against the inner edge of the blade opposite the pivot therefor.
A chain fastener comprising. two parallel body plates each having an outstandinp; car at one end thereof and each beins; notched inward of its ear. aflat plate co1nprising a blade pivoted between the ears and said plate having a notch to align with the body plates When the blade is closed therebetween, a spring rod having an eye end arranged between the body plates, a pivot passing through the eye, ayoke on the body plates engaged by said pivot and an element passing transversely through the body plates engaging and bowing the spring between the eye and the free end thereof which contacts with the edge of the 10 lade opposite its pivot.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signat-ure.
