To all whom it may concern Be it known that l, Arrrrrua W mans MIN- NnY, a citizen of the United. States, and a resident of Stockton, in the county of San Joaquin and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Vl heel Boxing and UilinglDe vices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improved car wheel boxing and oiling device forvuse in connection with railroad rolling stock, the object thereof being to provide a novel, simple and eflicient structure of bearing for receiving the journaled ends of the axles with which the wheels are generally formed and the connection therewith of an oiling or lubricating device for conveniently lubricating the bearings in order to avoid excessive heating or burning out of the bearings, thereby preventing wrecks due to hot boxes and serving to facilitate getting the traflic over the road.
A further object of the invention is to provide a novel lubricating device which causes a continuous circulation of the oil, thereby resulting in a saving of oil, to filter the oil each time it is used during such continuous circulating in the lubricating process, thereby preventing hot boxes as stated, causing the train to run easier and smoother and resulting in a considerable saving in expense for oiling or lubricating purposes, as regards the journal boxes of the rolling stock. Uther and further objects of my invention will become readily apparent to persons skilled in the art, from a consideration of the following description when taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, wherein:

Referring to the drawings in detail, in which like reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral designates the journal box through the apertured rear wall '1]. of which the journal end 12 of the carwheel axle is adapted to extend, said aperture being des ignated at 13 and being sufficiently large to admit the entrance of a head 14 at the end of the journal or spindle end of the axle, and in the form of an annular flange or air cuniscribing shoulder as shown. The inner portion of the journal box is in the form of a rectangular casing or housing including the rear wall or inner wall 11, bottom and sides and a. closed top portion provided at its juncture with the vertical wall 15 of the vertically disposed front portion of the box with a transverse shoulder 16 for a purpose to be subsequently specified. The outer end of the boxing is enlarged vertically and laterally to provide an oil reservoir having a depending portionor reservoir proper 17 extending below the bottom portion of the journal box proper designated at 10 thus providing means for containing a good sup ply of lubricating oil in said reservoir or well. It should be noted that the inner wall of the reservoir 17 is offset outwardly with respect to the wall thus providing means at the top for accommodating an oil collecting or distributing device for feeding oil to the bearing and the journal as will be hereinafter pointed out. The front of the box is designated at 19 and the top at 20 which in conjunction with the side walls 21 are provided with an inclined openingcovered by a closure 22 having the suitable apertured or other form of handl 23 at the lower end thereof whereby it may be opened on its hinges or pivot 24 by whichit is connected to the sides and top of the box. The pivot is preferably in the form of a bolt extending through lugs or apertured cars at the opposite sides of the box, the top being recessed to accommodate the projecting end of the lid or cover 22 as indicated at 25. In order to secure the lid in a closed position, there is mounted on the top 20 a spring 26 which is secured on a top 27 mounted on the top 20 through the medium of a bolt 28 engaged through apertures in their respective parts as clearly shown in Figure 1 of the drawings.
The spring is normally tensioned downwardly as shown, thereby holding the lid closed, while the lid is provided near its pivoted end and at its outer face with a recess 29 to receive the curved free end of the spring, in order to permit the free end of the lid to be opened wide for gaining access to the interior of the box for any purpose. 7
The nut 30 securing the bolt in position is secured to the under side of the top portion 20 and therefore cannot be tampered with. The top face of the box 27 is beveled or tapered so as to incline the spring 26 and thereby facilitate the exertion of pressure to hold the lid closed while still permitting the lid to be readily opened through the medium of the handle 23 projecting from the lower edge thereof.
At the bottom of the box 10 'are located a series of. transverse vertical partitions or walls 81 having aligned apertures or openings 32, said walls being designed to support a forarninous plate or screen 33 having downturned ends engaged or bent down at its ends against the sides of the end walls or partitions 31, in order to retain the screen in position. The screen is adapted to support the felt 35 and hold the same up against the journaled end 12 and at the inner portion of the boxing. The babbitt or other form of bearing is shown particularly in Figures 1 and 2 and is designated at 36. This hearing is of rectangular form and is provided with a concaved recess 37 in the bottom conforming to the journal end or spindle of the axle, while the opposite sides thereof are beveled throughout its length as indicated at 38. a at the inner end there is provided a transverse shoulder or vertical projection 39 and intermediately of the opposite sides, triangular projections or lugs 40 which fit up against ribs 41 on the inside walls of the boxed ends so that the bearings will be had. Near its forward end the top portion of the bearing is provided with a funnel-like oil receiving depression 42 having central discharge opening 48 to which the side walls incline. while leading from said opening 43 are transverse oil grooves 44 communicating with longitudinally extending oil grooves 45 all on the under side or concaved portion or face of the bushing or babbitt of the bearing and out into the same. in order that oil discharged through the depression 42 will. be fed through the journal or spindle end of the axle for thoroughly and neatly distributing the oil or lubricant thereto. In order to secure the bushing or babbitt of the bearing in position, an angular plate, preferably of right angular formation. as designated at 46 is fitted on top of the bearing so as to engage the top 14 of the boxing, to hold the bearing down on the journal. This plate is provided with an apertured projection 4-7 in order that the plate may be conveniently engaged with a suitable object or tool for removing the plat for purposes of renewing the bushing or babbitt of the bearing or otherwise as desired in practice. This operation can be conveniently effected, so as to displace the plate as by turning the same through a suitable are, in order to disengage the same from behind the projecting shoulder or strap 16, it being understood that certain parts of the lubricating device to be hereinafter described are removed, in order to permit the removal and application of the bushing or babbitt.
The oil collecting and distributing device in connection with the specific form of hearing and babbitt or bushing, further includes a disk or disk-like rotary oil carrier having a rim 48 having inwardly extending side flanges or circumscribing annular walls 40 providing a channel therebetween. Bolts 50 at the outer face or edge of the dish-like oil carrier carry an axial hub 51 which extends beyond the opposite face a trifle and is cured against the enlargement. 14 of the journal or spindle end of the axle. For this pun pose, the enlargement 51 is preferably provided with a pair of sockets 52 engaged by bolts or screws 53 passing through similarly spaced axially extending apertures 54 in the hub, the outer face of the hub being provided with a recess or depression accommodating the ends of the bolt'or screws so that the disk-like oil carrier is securely held in position on the end of the journal or spindle of the axle whereby it will dip into the oil in the reservoir 17 at the bottom or the enlarged front portion of the box. in this manner the oil will be retained within the walls or flanges of the disk-like oil car rier rim, and will be turned upwardly during the rotation thereof with the axle, as will be later described. This part of the device, specifically, constitutes the oil gathering or collecting means, the oil adhering to the rotating device. that is the inner walls of the rim and the flanges or side alls and being turned around by centrifugal action. cohesion and adhesion.
The oil distributing means comprises a bottom plate or pan 56 having side llangcs 57, the outer end of the plate or pan preferably tapcring to a point and the inner end being unobstructed. that is the flange or wall 57 being omitted at the inner end in order that oil flowing on or deposited on the plate or pan may readily flow therefrom into the distributing funnel or recess 42 when the parts are positioned as shown in Figure 1 of the drawings. Extending in alignment with the projection formin the scraper 58 and made fast to or formed integral with the plate 10, is a projection or rib 59 which is raised thereon and which is provided with a horizontal longitudinal slot 60 extending substantially throughout the length thereof but terminating at spaced points from the ends thereof in order that the slots will be confined. @traddling the projection or rib 59 raised on the plate-is a post til, the lower end thereof being. grooved or bifurcated as indicated at 62 in order to freely engage over said rib or projection and having a transverse pin 63 extended through the apertured furcations and through the slot 60 in order to allow adjustment of the hanger post along the rib or projection and the necessary angular or pivotal movement to compensate for the movement between the journal and boring, when the car is jolting up and down, or is taking a turn, so that the journal hear ing will shift to one side orthe other, as the rim of the disk or oil carrier is down over the ends of the scraper, the scraper will be permitted to stay under the rim of the wheel and not injure the device or parts thereof' ln addition, unusual wear will be avoided. travels along the grooves 4'4: and as to thoroughly lubricate the journal or spindle end of the axle and will then be absorbed by the felt, so that the latter will be thoroughly supplied with the oil or lubricant and thereby retain the bearing in a cool and thoroughly lubricated condition. The oil after passing through the felt will pass through the foraminous plate .or' screen 33 and flow down into the bottom of the boring 10 and through the opening 32, subsequently discharging into the well 17 to be continuously carried up and distributed for lubricating the bearings as heretofore described. Thus, a thorough circulation or continuous feeding and discharging, of the oilor lubricant traffic over the roads, a sufficient quantity of oil being retained in the well of the boring to keep the journal thoroughly and properly oiled. ln this way, the cost of uplree and maintenance will be greatly reduced, t e oil being continuously filtered on its way back to the reservoir or well for reuse, after having passed through the bearing and then through the felt and screen or filter. The trains will thus run easier and smoother in addition to the labor saving effect caused by the device. The device can be Very economically produced and applied, without material alterations, except in the box. It will also be understood that the retaining plate l6 for securing the bushing or babbitt of the hear ing in position will engage the shoulder or rim 39 at the-inner end of said bushing, thus retaining the plate in position. The bushing also engages the shoulder or end it and is thereby retained against outward displacement or end-thrust. Tn this way, the babbitt or bushing of the hearing will not drop into the boring and it may be stated in general that the device is substantially fool proof.

Having thus described my invention what it claim is l. A lubricator for journal boxes comprising an oil collector mounted on the journal, a scraper adjustably and pivotally mounted on the journal box and cooper-able with the collector, yieldable means for holding the scraper in cooperative engagement with the collector, and a distributer coasting with the journal and receiving the oil from the scraper.
2. The combination with a boxing and a spindle end therein, a bushing fitting the spindle, filter and oil holding means below the spindle, said bushing having an oil opening and grooves at the spindle, a disk having a hub attached to the spindle and dipping in oil in the boxing, said disk having a flanged rim receiving oil therein, a post suspended from the top of the boxing, a pan slidably suspended at the lower end of the post for adjustment toward and away from the disk and havin e a rim adapted to collect and discharge the oil to the opening in. the bushing at. the rear thereof and having, a raised portion forming a scraper disposed within and adapted to engage the rim of the disk, said post being rigid, and spring means carried by the post and engaging the scraper to hold the same outwardly and upwardly against the rim and adapted to pen mit. adjustment of the scraper upon its support.
