Description

m f4 l@ R. J. FAIRCl-HLD POWER PUMP Filed June 4, 1921 KMK @zz U,
Jard.,
Patented Apr. 24, 1923.
UNITED STATES` y 1,452,963 PATENT OFFICE.
ROLAND J'. FAIRCHILD, OF K ALAMAZOO, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO NATIONAL WATER LIFT CO., 0F KALAMAZOO, MICHIGAN.
POWER PUMP.
Application filed June 4,
To all who-m it 'may concern.'v
Be it known that I, ROLAND J. FAinoHILD, a citizen of the United States, residin f at the city and county ofvKalamazoo, tate of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Power Pumps,.of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in power pumps.
The main objects of this invention are:
First, to provide an improved pump driven by an electric motor which is well adapted for use inkresidences for pumping cistern water and is very compact and simple in structure.
Second, to provide an improved pump I having these advantages in which a small motor may be employed and at the same time pump the water against a considerable pressure.
Further objects, and objects relating to structural details, will definitely appear from the detailed` description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the .devices and means described in the Y following specification. The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanyingl drawing, formingl a part of this specification, in which:
Fig. I is a side elevation of my improved pump, the pan which Ipreferably provide in this connection being partially broken away.
Fig. II is a detail view partially in vertical longitudinal section with the motor omitted, the section being on a line correspondin to line 2-2 of Fig. III.
Fig. II is a transverse section on a line corresponding to line 3-3 of Fig. II. In the drawing similar reference char acters refer to similar parts throughout the lseveral views, and the sectional views are taken looking inthe direction of the little arrows at the ends of the section lines.` p Referrin to the drawlng, I provide a pump cylin er 1 having a piston 2 and piston rod Theseparts are shown conventionally.
I also provide a gear box 4 having a removable side plate 5.
On the side opposite the removable side plate the gear box is provided with an inrod and crosshead extension 14 at the front.
The gear box also has base members or feet 15. On the extension 14 is a seat 16 for .the electric motor 17. The shaft 18 ofthis motor is aligned with and connected to the -shaft of the worm 19 by means of the joint 20, the worm being supported in the worm housing extension 13 so as to mesh with the worm gear 9. Y
A base 21 is provided kfor the pump cylinder 1,.the base having a yoke 22 with a head 28 for one end of the cylinder and a head 24 for the. extension 14 of the gear box, the extension beingv bolted to this head 24.
Pinion rod packings 25 are provided for the heads 23 and 24. A crosshead 26 is mounted in the extension 14, the connecting rod 27 and the pin-ion rod being connected to this crosshead as shown in Fig. II.
By thus forming and arranging the parts, I provide a structure which is very compact. The moving parts are eiectively supported in proper relation and properly aligned and a comparatively small motor or motor of small horse power may be em plo ed.
avin thus described my v invention, what I c. aim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a power pump, the combination with a cylinder, piston, and a piston rod, of-a gear box provided with a base and having a removable side plate and an inwardly projectin bearing on its wall opposite said side p ate, there being a removable cap for the outer end of said bearing, said gear box also having 'a worm housing extension at its top, and a connecting rod and crosshead extension at the front, a base for said cylinder providedwith a yoke having a cylinder` head at one end and a head for said crosshead extension at theother, said heads being provided with packings fori said piston rod, a. worm gear mounted in said bearing in said gear box, a connecting rod. a crosshead to which said piston and connecting rods are connected slidin in said extension, a motor mounted on said crosshead and connectingrod extension, and a driving worm to which the motor shaft is connected mounted in said Worm extension of said gear box to coact with said worm gear.
2. In a power pump, the combination with a cylinder, piston, and a piston rod, of a gear box provided with a base and having a connecting rod and crosshead extension at the front, a base for said cylinder provided With a yoke having a cylinder head at one end and a head for said crosshead extension at the other, said heads being provided with packings for said piston rod, a Worm gear mounted in said gear box, a connecting rod, a crosshead to which said piston and connecting rods are connected sliding in said extension, a motor' mounted on said crosshead and connecting .rod extension, and a driving worm to which the motor shaft is connected mounted in said gear box to coact with said Worm gear.
3. In a power pump, the combination with a cylinder, piston, and a. piston rod, of la gear box having a removable side plate and an inwardly projecting bearing on its Wall opposite said side plate, there being a removable cap for the outer end osaid bearing, said gear box also having a Worm housing extension at its top, and a connecting rod and crosshead extension at the front, a worm gear mounted in said bearing in said gear box, a connecting rod, a crosshead'to which said piston and connecting rods are connected sliding in said extension, a motor mounted on said crosshead connecting rod extension, and a driving Worm to which the motor shaft is connected mounted in said worm extension of said gearbox to coact with said Worm gear.
4. In a power pump, the combination with a cylinder, piston, and a piston rod, of a gear box having an extension at the front, a base forv said cylinder provided with a yoke having a cylinder head at one end and a head for said gear box extension at the other, said heads being provided With pack ings for said piston rod, a worm gear:
