GLUI'NG MACHINE.
Application led August 23, 1920. Serial No. 405,350.
Z all whom t may conce/ra Be it known that I, CLIFFORD W. MARSH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bridgeport, county of .Fairiielch State of Connecticut, have invented an improvement in Gluing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
rlhis invention has for its object to produce a gluing machine by means of which glue, or similar adhesive material, may be applied to a sheet of paper or the like without the necessity of spreading the glue on the sheet as is now common practice, the machine of the invention being provided with mechanism whereby globules of glue may be deposited on the sheet at desired spaced apart points.
Vith the above and other objects in view, the invention comprises the construction, arrangement and combination of parts as now to be fully described and hereinafter specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification,
' and showing a sheet of paper or the like as when inserted in the machine, the movable parts being in a position diiferent from that disclosed in Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 a section on line 4 4 in Fig. 1, showing a sheet as when inserted and disclosing the glue depositing comb as when being elevated to deposit glue on the sheet; and
Fig. 5 is a section on line 5-5 in Fig. 1, showing the sliding frame resting in the bottom of the glue pot.
10 denotes the base of the machine and 11 represents handles thereon by means of which the machine may be moved from place to place. A glue pot 12 of any desired configuration is adapted to rest on the base, lugs 13 being provided to locate the glue pot. Guide rods 14, imbedded in the base as indicated at 15, are for the purpose of supporting a sliding frame 16 adapted to lie in the bottom of the glue pot. The sliding frame 'preferably consists of a strip of metal bent upwardly at right angles at the two points indicated 17, outwardly at right angles at the two points indicated 18, then downwardly at right angles at the two points indicated 19, and then inwardly at right angles at the ytwo points indicated 20. The outwardly bent portions of the sliding frame, denoted by 21, and the inwardly bent portions, denoted by 22, are provided with perforations, denoted by 23 and 24, respectively, adapted to slidably receive the guide rods. The sliding frame is thus located in upright position on the guide rods as will be understood. vAdjacent its opposite ends the base is provided with lugs 25 which are perforated to'rotatably receive a pivot rod 26 to the opposite ends of which are rigidly secured, as indicated at 27, hand levers 28, the hand levers, as shown, being preferably located on the outer sides of the lugs. The front ends of the hand levers are provided with finger pieces 29 andthe rear ends are provided with hooks 30 adapted to engage lifting pins 31 carried by the sliding frame. Secured to the portion of the sliding frame which is adapted to lie in the bottom of the glue pot is a glue depositing comb 32 provided with teeth 33.
The base of the machine also carries upright posts 34, two located adjacent each end of the base and preferably at opposite sides of the guide rods, and each provided with shoulders 35. A plate 36 provided with perforations 37 is adapted to rest on shoulders 35, and a stop plate 45 is adapted to rest on the perforated plate. In this embodiment of my invention the glue transferring portions 33 of the comb are limited in their upward movement, being designed to stop short of the under surface of the upper work supporting plate, to prevent the comb from depositing glue on the plate itself, if the machine should be operated without the work being in place, which would cause glue to be smeared on the top side of the work when next inserted in the machine. It is for this purpose that I provide the upper work supporting plate with the perforations 37 int-o which the portions 33 may enter, should the machine be operated at a time when there was no work in the machine, thus preventing the application of glue to the upper plate, and still providing a glue applying instrumentality that is insured of touching the work when in place in the machine. The stop plate has struck from it downwardly extending stops 4G adapted to limit the inward movement of the sheet to be glued when placed in the machine, as will be made clear, the stops passing` downwardly through certain of the perforations of the perforated plate. .lloth the stop plate and perforated plate are cut away as indicated at 38 to allow the sliding frame to pass when it is caused to be elevated bv manipulation of either of the hand levers, and both of said plates are provided with openings through which the upright posts freely pass. A glue guard 39, preferably shaped more clearly shown in Figs. 2, 3, and 4, has its front edge resting in lugs 40 on the base and its rear edge resting upon the rear edge of the glue pot. The glue guard is slotted as indicated at 41, the slots being in alinement with the teeth of the glue depositing comb and with the perforatio-ns in the perforated plate. 42 denotes a guide plate for the sheet, denoted by A, or other material to be glued, and 43 denotes a cover for the machine when not in use, the lower edge of the cover beine' capable of resting in a depression 44 in the machine base. rlhe glue pot may be filled to any desirable depth with lglue B.
lt will be noticed that most of the pi 'ts of the machine invented by me are easily removable from the base and from each other. After the base has had secured to the guide rods, the upright posts and hand levers, the glue pot may be placed in position on the base, `and supplied with glue. The sliding frame may'then be posiH tioned on the guide rods in the bottom of the glue pot, the glue guard may then be laid over the pot,`the perforated plate then be placed on the upright posts and the stop plate afterwards placed on said posts and against said perferated plate. The machine is then ready for use. To disassemble the parts, the operations are reversed.
o use the machine, a sieet is inserted from the front, as shown very clearly in Figs. 3 and 4 between the glue guard and the perforated plate. lthe stops lingiiting the inward movement of the sheet. The right hand end of the sheet may7l he properly positioned by means of theguide plate shown more clearly at the right in Fig. l. lllhen now the linger piece of the hand lever is pushed down. the sliding .laine causes the depositing comb and its teeth to move upwardly. lt will be apparent that the upward movement of the sliding frame will be limited by engagement of the hooks at the rear end of the hand levers with the lifting pins. said hooks being in "the position shown m Fig. 2, when the slid` frame is in the bottom of the glue pot, and in the position shown in llig. 3, when the sliding frame is eleated. Ars the comb teeth are elevated from the glue, each will carry a small ball or globule of glue. When now the teeth move into Contact with the sheet, the glue will be deposited on the sheet as will be obus. The comb is adapted to pass but :1 slight distanie into the perforations in the perforated plate, so that the sheet will not be broken as the glue is being applied, and the p rt'oratcd plate and stop plate, by reason of their :free engagen'ient with the upright posts, are adapted to slide up on said posts should a sheet of any eonsiflerable thickness be placed in the machine, the machine beingthus capable of gluing sheets of any thick'- ness. rlhe glue guard `is `cut away and shaped as shown so that the glue deposited will not be smeared when the sheet is removed from the machine.
As soon as the linger piece is released, the sliding frame and comb will move down# wardly in theglue and the sheet may then be 'ithdrawn hat l claim is,
