WATER-JET HEAD ATTACHMENT FOB, BUTTON-BLANK-CUTTING MACHINES.

To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NICHOLAS BARRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Muscatine, in the county of Muscatine and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in VVater-Jet Head Attachments for Button-Blank-Cutting Machines; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear,- and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
This invention is a water jet attachment for button blank cutting machines, particularly semiautomatic or bench machines, in which the shell is held in tongs grasped by the hand of the operator and presented to a rotating tubular saw which cuts the blanks therefrom. y
In order to prevent overheating of the saws and facilitate the cutting operations and wash out the sawdust it is customary to eject a stream of water against the saw and shell while the latter is being cut, and
the operators prefer to have a plurality of small streams of water directed against the saw and shell as they consider this most efl ectivelycools the saws and facilitates the Work.
Heretofore a single nozzle on the end of a hose has been attached to the cutting machines for the purpose of supplying a jet of water to the saws. Also a plurality of copper tubes which could be forcibly bent to direct jets of water against the saws have been used; but as the saws vary in length and as they are shortened at' each sharpening thereof, it is necessary to repeatedly bend such tubes in order to properly direct the water jets and such tubes shortly become hard and brittle and break;'and they are also troublesome to properly adjust by bending. 4
The object of my present invention is to overcome all the objections attendant on the heretofore known devices for supplying jets of water to the saws of button cutting machines; and to provide a novel attachment by which a plurality of jets of water can be directed on to the saw and each jet can be readily adjusted at any desired angle or relation to the saw and to the others without any danger of injuring or breaking pipes or connections by repeated, or frequent or extreme, variations in their positions.
The invention therefore provides a novel jet head attachment which can be applied to button blank cutting machines, said attachment having a plurality of relatively adjustable jets which can be independently readily adjusted todirect streams of water against the saw and shell in the Way and manner that best suits the particular fancy of the operator. Y
I will explain the invention with reference to the accompanying drawings in which I have illustrated one practical embodiment thereof; and will thereafter set forth in the claims the essentials of the invention and the novel features of construction and novel combination of parts for which protection is desired.
In said drawings:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the attachment as applied to the saw end of a button cutting machine of a Well known bench type.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged plan view of the attachment detached.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail sectional view.
S designates the tubular saw of an ordinary button-blank-cutting-machine of a well known type, and which is shown as mounted in a rotary spindle A journaled in bearings B on the frame F of themachine. These parts are well known and further eX- planation thereof is unnecessary.
Adjacent the saw is mounted the water jet attachment which, as shown, comprises a tubular T-shaped body 1, to which are adjustably connected a plurality of jet tubes 4%, preferably by universal joint connections which permit each tube to be adjusted independently of the other tubes relative to the body so as to direct jets of water from such body on to the saw and shell in the most advantageous manner. As shown, the ends of the body 1 and the T thereof are externally threaded for the engagement of caps 2, and the ends of the body and of the side outlet are preferably concaved as shown at l", and the caps 2 are centrally perforated. The opposed concavities in the body and the caps form parti-globular sockets in which are confined the ball shaped ends 3 of jet pipes or tubes 4. The outer" end of each tube 1 is preferably enlarged and screw threaded as at 5; and on such threadedrend is screwed a perforated nozzle head 6 of any suitable or desired construction.
Fitted within each socket is a semi-spherical washer 3 having a flange 3 that engages the end .of the body or T and which is clamped thereagainst by the cap 2 (see Fig. 3) and this washer has a central opening 3 The edge of the opening in the cap 2 may be concaved, on its inner side, as shown in Fig. 33, forming a continuation of the spherical concavity formed in the body 1. Said washers 3 prevent leakage of water as the water pressure forces the parti-spherical portion of the washer tightly against the ball head 3 of the tube 4:.
The bore 1 (see Fig. of the body 1 is larger than the bore 1* of the jet tubes l, and the central openings 3 of the washers 3? are larger than the bore 1*. This construction of the parts causes the pressure of the water in the bore 1 to force the partiglobula-r washers 3 to bear upon the ball shaped ends 3 of the jet tubes 4: thus forming a water seal between the said heads and body.

Preferably the two outermost tubes 4 are curved on arcs of approximately (or a quarter of a circle) and are slightly longer than the intermediate tube 4:. This arrange ment and construction enables the two outermost tubes and nozzle heads 6 to be adjusted in any desired position relative to each other and relative to the central tube and nozzle head; and the central tube is also adjustable to any desired position relative to the side outlet of the body 1.
' The body 1 is preferably fixedly connected to a supporting pipe 7, which may be detachably secured to a suitable support C,
such as commonly provided in bench but-' tonblank cutting machines. As shown the pipe? passes through a sleeve 8 having a threaded shank passed through a perforated ear Don the support C, and engaged by a nut 9 thereby clamping the pipe 7 securely in position and holding the body 1 in the 'desired position relative to the saw.
The pipe 7 may be connected by means of a hose 10 to any suitable water supply @pipe, and the flow of water can be controlled by any suitable valve, as at 11. The hose and valve are arranged substantially like those commonly used with the hereto- Y jet heads, or nozzles. on such' fore known machines.
As shown the nozzles are racticall 1 con nected with the body by a universal joint connection. I prefer the globular ball and socket connections shown, but other equivalent constructions might be used, the essentially novel feature of the invention being an adjustable set of nozzles which can be readily adjusted, without having to bend or distort them or the connecting pipes, so as to direct a plurality of streams of water against the saw and against the shell being cut in the manner considered most advantageous or preferred by the operator.
I prefer to use the nozzle heads 6, as they can be readily removed to facilitate cleans ing of the jet apertures, which should be minute, and can be as readily replaced; and. they can be readily changed if itis desired. to use heads having apertures of another size, according as it may be desired to in crease or diminish the jets of water being applied to the saw.
While I have shown the attachment as having three jet heads, it is obvious that the number of et heads connected with the body could be readily varied, by providing the body with any desired number of Ts or branches; and I do not consider the invention restricted to the particular niunber of nozzles shown, nor to the particular construction indicated in the drawings.

1. A'water jet attachment for a button blank cutting machine and the like; comprising a hollowT, and a plurality of jet tubes respectively connected with the ends and the side member of the T by ball and socket joints; substantially as described.
2; A' water jet attachment for a button blank cutting machine and the likefc'bmprising a hollow body; a plurality of jet tubes adjustably connected with the body at different points by ball and socket joints to permit each tube to be independently adjusted to direct a jet of water onto the work; a pipe connected with said body for supplying' water thereto; andmea'ns for supporting said body on the machine.
3. A water jet attachment for a button blankcutting machine and the like, compris inga hollow body having a threaded portion provided with a parti-globular socket; a can screwed to said portion; and a jet tube having a globular end fitted into said socket and confined by said cap, the bore of the water passage in said globular end being smaller than the bore of thewwater passage in the body, substantially as described.

A water jet attachment for button blank cutting machines and the like, comprisin a body having a threaded portion. provi ed with a parti-globular socket, a cap screwed onto said portion; a parti-globular washer fitted in the socket; and a jet tube having a globular end adjustably confined in said socket, and packed by the Washer, substantially as described.

A water jet attachment for button blank cutting machines and the like, com prising a body having an exteriorly threaded portion provided with a parti-globular socket; an annular cap screwed on said portion; a parti-globular washer fitted in the parti-globular socket; and a jet tube having a glabular end adjustably confined in said socket; the bore in said globular end being smaller than the bore of the body and the opening in the washer, substantially as de' prising a body having a threaded portion '7 and a parti-g1obular socket at each end and side portion; annular caps screwed to said portions and parti-globular Washers con fined in the sockets by said caps; and jet tubes having globular ends adjusta-bly confined in said sockets by the washers and caps, substantially as described.
8. A water jet attachment for button blank cutting machines and the like, comprising a body having a threaded portion and a parti-globular socket at each end and side portion; annular'ca-ps screwed to said portions and parti-globular washers confined in the sockets by said caps; and jet tubes having globular ends adjustably confined in said sockets bythe Washers and caps, the bores in said globular ends being smaller than the bores of the body; jet heads screwed on the outer ends of said jet tubes; and means for supporting the body on the machine.
