DEVICE FOR THE USE OF CARBON PAPER IN TYPEWRITERS.
Application filed March 16, 1921.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that SALVADOR CARRAU, and WARREN RICHARDSON COBEAN, citizens of Argentina and United States, respectively,
and residents of Buenos Aires, Argentina,
have invented certain new and useful Devices for the Use of Carbon Paper in Typewriters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates-to a device which, when applied to typewriters allows the utilization and use of carbon sheets with ease and rapidity and a great economy of work and time.
The insertion of carbon sheets, is, as.is well known a slow and troublesome operation, which at times is somewhat. difiicult if sufiicient space is not available on the writing desk; air currents being specially trouble- 2 some, as they blow the carbon sheets away.
The time wasted by a typist during the day in uniting 'the sets of writing paper fifty,
eighty and often a hundred times, is quite evident, after which the typist has again to waste valuable time in taking the sheets apart every time a letter is finished.
If the said carbon sheets are placed together in one set into the typewriter, extracting only the written sheets of paper once the page has been finished, and afterwards inserting the blank writing paper sheets, the economizing of time and labor is considerable, as only a small space is required on the writing desk and there is no I need of extending the papers on same. As above stated the blank sheets are easily and,
rapidly inserted by the use of this invention, as the carbon papers are fixed in one set in the typewriter and do not need removing 40 every time a new sheet is to be typed.
A form of device embodying this invention is hereinafter described with reference to the accompanying drawingsin which:

which the lower portions of the latter can be stuck or attached to gummed strips b, 6 etc., forming what may be termed counterfoils as best illustrated in Fig. 3. The sheets of carbon paper 0 may be also sewed with string, wire or any other suitable material. The counterfolls comprise several strips of gummed paper on which are attached as many sheets ofcarbon paper as are required. The outer strip b of the booklet serves to facilitate the backward movement in the typewriter of the set of papers placed in the device, as for this purpose the roller of the typewriter must be moved backwards or in a counter-clockwise direction. The space indicated by letter J in the figures, represents a prolongation which is one of the characteristics of this invention. This prolongation is the part which is held fast in the typewriter and projects below the platen or printing roller when the last line of the sheet of paper is reached, thus allowing the written pages to be withdrawn without any need of removing also the carbon sheets. The latter therefore always remain in place and ready to receive the new sheets of blank paper, which are inserted between the carbon sheets after which the device together with the said sheets is returned to the starting oint by pulling on the prolongation d.

0pemtion.-The utilization of the device does not require further explanation. On placing it in the typewriter with the folded portion a, in advance, the roller g is rotated in a clockwise direction until. the lower part or prolongation d of the device only is gripped. Then the blank sheets 7' are placed between the carbon papers and the roller g is rotated in an opposite direction until the blank sheets are brought to a position to allowthestarting of the typin on the'inby one from between the carbon papers everytime a sheet has been typed'and then new sheets inserted between the carbons when a new set of sheets have to be typed. In the present device the sheets of carbon paper are always held together and conveniently mounted in order to eliminate the troublesome operation as used at present, as it is only necessary to insert the blank sheets of aper every time they have to be typed.
l t is understood that the construction and mode of operation above described may be varied as to details according to the preferenceof the operator, as for example, a textile may be used instead of paper, and the manner of inserting the devicewith the carbon and writing paper may be the reverse of that described. The manner of fastening the carbons to the counterfoils as described is not material to the invention, since the use of gummed strips may be substituted by any other way of fastening the multiple carbons to the backing sheet.
Having thus described the invention, what we claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States of America, is:
1. A device for facilitating the making of carbon copies with a typewriter comprising a backing sheet provided with a folded end portion, a series of superposed tabs, each having one of its ends attached to the end portion of the backing sheet which is opposite to the folded end portion of said backing ing a backing sheet provided with a folded end portion, carbon sheets superposed on the said sheet and fastened thereto, said folded end portion positioned to envelope the free ends of said carbon sheets and letter sheets therebetween, and an extension rojecting from the end portion of the bac 'ng sheet which is opposite to the folded end portion of said backing sheet adapted to be retained by the rollers of the typewriter machine after the entire cilitate the placing of new writing sheets Within the device without removing the device from the; writin machine.
