Description

aten'te Apr. 17, 19236 i ill iii Application filed April 28,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES A. Hunsrrs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elmhurst, in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tool Holders, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to tool holders, and the object is to provide effective means for securing a tool in the holder, so that it will not become accidentally dis placed.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a view partly in section and partly in elevation of the holder,
Figure 2 is a detail sectional view with the holding means detached, and
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the key.
The holder comprises a stock 4 having a terminal head portion 5, through which passes a socket This socket is adapted to slidably receive a tool, as illustrated at 7. At one side of the socket 6 is formed a key-receiving chamber 8 that is in communication with the socket 6, and has its outer end tapered as shown at 9. Its rear end is offset as illustrated at 10 and opens through the rear portion of the head on the opposite side of the stock to the rear to end of the socket 6.
A key 11 driven into the chamber from the rear end thereof has its front portion ofiset and is preferably tapered as shown at 12, so as to fit into the tapered portion 9 of the chamber, thereby acting as a wedge.
A set screw 13 threaded into the head bears against an intermediate portion of the key 11 and serves to clamp the same snugly against the tool.
As further disclosed in the drawings, the bottom face or that portion of the key which bears upon the tool 7 is roughened or knurled as indicated at 14, thus serving as a positive gripping face for,the tool. By
1921. Serial in. 465,170.
this arrangement, it is apparent that the increased contact between the wedge and the tool causes the pressure for holding the same to be equally distributed, thereby preventing the tool from breaking when it becomes short and prolonging its period of use.
From the foregoing, it is thought that the construction, operation and many advantages of the herein described invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art, without further description, and it will be understood that various changes in the size, shape, proportion and minor details of construction, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A tool holder comprising a stock having a tool-receiving socket and a key chainher at one side of the same having an oiiset portion opening through the stock, a key in the chamber adapted to bear against the tool placed on the socket and having an of"- set portion in the offset portion of said key chamber, and a set screw threaded in the stock and bearing against the key.
2. A tool holder comprising a stock having a tool-receiving socket opening through the end of the stock and through one side of the said stock, a key-receiving chamber in communication with the socket and opening through the opposite side of the stock to that through which the socket opens, a key in said chamber, and means for clamping the 80 key against a tool placed in the socket.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
