Be it known that I, GEORGE W. KUENNETH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Paterson, in the county of Passaic and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tension- Controlling Means for Beaming Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to beaming machines, and its object is to provide means in such machines whereby to maintain at all times an equable tension and avoid undue strain on the warp; according to my invention it is possible to adjust the amount of tension so that thestrain on the warp will be precisely what the quality of material can stand and should have and no more.

In a suitable frame generally designated by the character a is journaled the beam 6 having any suitable means, as c, to rotate it. d is a brake consisting of the usual strap which at one end is attached to the frame and at the other end has connected thereto a lever structure to be described, the strap bearing in the usual manner against a brakeband 6 on the reel.
A lever structure 7 is fulcrumed at the beam end of the machine in a pair of uprights 9 upstanding from the sides of the frame. This lever structure consists of a shaft 7t iournaled in the uprights and suitably held against longitudinal movement therein. a pair of levers 13 secured on the shaft one near each end thereof and each having upwardly, downwardly, and rear- 55 wardly extending i, a", t", and a is connected.

To facilitate thus establishing the warp under the control of the part of my mechanism now being described the rollers j and 70 are preferably removably mounted, as shown. Lever structures 7 and m are coupled together as follows: A. long link 1" is pivoted at one end to the arm 2" of the lever 2' of the lever structure 7 and at its free end it includes a suitable loop? whose slot 25 receives the arm 79"ot lever structure m on which it is supported by the clip or vertically adjustably secured on said arm. The slot 5 of the loop allows certain lost-motion as between the link and lever structure m. The link is rendered adjustable in effective length by a threaded connection '2; between the body part and loop thereof.
A spiral spring '10 is secured to a stud a; pivoted to the arm 77 of the near lever z of lever structure f and carries at its free end a loop 2 whose longitudinal slot receives a pin a on the adjoining upright g.
In view of the foregoing and with the warp A arranged to extend around the rollers 7'-k in the manner stated, it will be apparent that the lever structure 7 will absorb any undue strains which might other wise be imposed on the warp, notably such as is: incident to overcoming the resistance of the reel when the beam is started rotating. The link 7- is adjusted so that when (depending upon the amount of weight Z imposed on lever structure 7) lever f is caused by the tautening warp to approach a certain position the lost-motion afforded by slot t in the link 8 will be expended, in consequence of which lever structure at will be moved. re
laxing the tension on the brake-strap d (which it normally holds set) and consequently reducing the braking resistance.
,Thus my invention not only contemplates chines the brakepressure is fixed and as there is not only the inertia of the reel but the adhesion of the brake to be overcome the strain onthe warp is one moment excessive and the next greatly reduced; by my invention these extremes of strains are entirely eliminated because the braking resistance fluctuates inversely to the tension.
When the power is cut off from the beam 'the relaxation of the warp A between the "beam and reel isobviously taken up by the lever structure 7", which keeps the tension the same as when the'beaming operation is in progress. On stopping the rotation of the beam the weighted lever structure f will z'fallback, tending to cause a rotatlve gain of the reel on the beam, which 1s at once overcome by the brake (Z. The stopping of the reel too suddenly, with consequent possibility. of straining the warp or breaking some o-f itsthreads, isat this time prevented by the cushioning device 10 which (though inactive up to thlspolnt, on account of slot .2 now comes into action by the end of its slot 2 engaging pin y, so that said device .l'QSlStS weights Z and cases the braking ac- :tion.
Incidentally, the cushioning device also eases the pressure movement of lever structure 7.
'In order to leave the machine standing -(whennot in operation without lever struc- ,.ture 7 exerting pressure on the warp I provide a latch 2 (Figure '1) which serves to lock the lever structure in inactive position; the lever structure may be shifted to this position by hand 3 attached to one end of its shaft /L-Figure 2.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. The combination, with the frame of a beaming machine, a reel and a beam therein, and a brake for the reel, of yielding means to exert pressure against one face of the warp between the reel and beam normally holding the brake set, and a cushioning control for said means operatively interposed between the same and the frame.
2. The combination, with the frame of a beaming machine, a reel and a beam journaled therein, an upstanding lever fulcrumedin the frame and adapted to rest against the warp between the reel and beam, a brake for the reel, another upstanding lever normally holding the brake set, and a power transmitting link pivoted to one lever.

The combination, with the frame of a beaming machine and a reel and beam journaled therein, of yielding means to exert pressure against one face ofthe warp be tween the reel and beam, and elastic cushion means, connecting the yieldingmeanswith the frame, to resistthe pressure m vement of said yielding means.
4.
