To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ABEL MAGUIN, a French citizen, and resident of 16 Rue Theodule-Ribot, Paris, France, have invented certain new and useful Improvements Relating to Drum Root' Cutters with a Horizontal Axis, for whichl have filed an application in France, dated th December, 1921, of which the following is a specification.
In root cutters with a horizontal axis impurities and waste from the materials which are being cut mayi frequently pass through the tree space which is lett between the lower edge ot the stationary disc and the edge oi' the rotating drum. These impurities and waste are deposited between the two members referred to and clog the intervening space which increases the load in operating the apparatus.
The present invention has for its subject improvements applicable to root cutters of the type referred to, for the purpose of enabling these apparatus to be cleaned easily either during operation or afterwards. The improvements are applicable in general to all drum root cutters with a horizontal axis.
The invention will now be described by way of example as applied to a root cutter witha helical feed of the system described in French Patent Number 464352 of the 11th January 1913.
In the drawings Figure l is a longitudinal section of a root cutter of the type described provided with the improvements forming the subject of the present invention. Figure 2 is a section on the line I-I of Figure 1 looking in the direction of the arrows.
In the drawing A indicates the rotary casing or drum and B is the stationary disc. The free space through which the impurities and waste from the materials, which are being cut, can pass so as to collect and heap up between the casing and the disc is indicated at C. This space increases in proportion to the wear of the root cutter.
The invention principally consists in providing in the rotary casing A a large radial slot 1 terminating in the interior of the casing, and a hole 2 arranged preferably diametrically opposite the slot 1. The slot 1 may remain open during the operation of the root cutter but it will be understood that it is generally kept closed during operation by means of a plate 3 which is held in position by any suitable means.
The hole 2 may also be kept open during operation but is preferably closed for example by means of a screw plug 4L.
The cleaning of the root cutter constructed as hereinbeibore described can be effected very easilyl both during or after operation. Through the slot 1 the disc B may be scraped very easily by any suitable means. llhe hole 2 serves as an injection orifice for water for the purpose of rinsing the parts which have been cleaned.
Having thus described my invention what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. ln a horizontal drum-shaped root cutter the combination of a stationary disc and a rotary member, the rotary member having a radial slot and a hole arranged diametri- Gally' opposite said slot, said slot being adapted 'for the purpose of enabling the stationary disc to be scraped, whilst the hole serves for the removal of material which is collected between the stationary disc and the rotary member and for the injection of a cleaning liquid.
2. In a horizontal drum-shaped root cutter the combination comprising a fixed disc A and a rotary member, said rotary member having a radial slot therein and a hole diainetrically opposite said slot, a plate with means fordetachably connecting said plate to said rotary member over the radial slot, and a screw plug adapted to fit into said hole.
