Y drawing, making a UNITED STATES PATENT CFFIQ'E.
THADDEUS HYATT, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO ELIZABETH A. L.
HYATT, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN FLEXIBLE ILLUMINATING VAULT-PLATES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 145,208, dated December 2, 1873; application filed October 532, 1873.
CASE 23;
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, THADDEUs IIYATT, of New York, in the county of New York and in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Elastic or Flexible Illuminating Pavement or Roof Plates and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the upper side of a roofing or pavement tile having its light openings inclosed, when desired, by means of my improved covering; and Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same.
Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.
In the use of illuminating-gratings for roofs, pavements, 850., it is usually desirable that during the heated term ventilation should be provided for by uncovering the light-openin gs; but, owing to the liability which exists of damage to the contents of the space inclosed by the entrance of water through said uncovered light openings during sudden storms, it is equally important that means should be provided for easily and quickly closing the same.
To effect these results is the design of my in vention, which consists in an elastic plate provided with glazed illuminating-openings, and capable of being removed, by rolling, from a perforated supporting frame or grating, substantially as is hereinafter specified.
In the annexed drawing, A represents an elastic plate, constructed preferably of rubber, and provided with a number of light-opci'lings,
part of this specification,-
a, each of which contains an illuminating-lens, B, that is secured in place by any desired means. The elastic glazed plate A is placed upon and supported by a grating, G, which, as seen in the drawing, may be constructed of or from iron or wood, and have light-openings c that correspond in size and position to the glazed openings of said plate A; or, if dcsired, said grating may be composed of woven wire. As thus constructed and arranged, the elastic plate may be easily and quickly rolled from over the grating, so as to entirely uncover the openings of the latter, and permit free circulation of air through the same, while to replace said covering requires still le as time and labor, as the natural inclination of its material will be to resume its plane form when released. In addition to the advantages named, the covering is a non-conductor of heat and cold, and will substantially prevent sweating upon the lower side of the grating.
Having thus fully set forth the nature and merits of my invention, what I claim as new 1s- An elastic plate provided with glazed illummating-openings, and capable of being removed by rolling from a perforated supporting frame or grating, substantially'as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 26th day of July, 1873.
THADDEUS HYATT.
Vitnesses AMBROSE MONELL, CHARLES SPYR.
