Description

Apr. 17, 1923. 1,4522%5 H. A. FREEMAN SILENCER Filed Feb. 1 1922 [rwaafwm Ween Potentd $91. 17, 1923.
UNHTED 'STATES HAROLD A. FREEMAN, 01 L08 ANGEILEB, CALIFORNIA.
SILENCEB.
Application filed February 1, 1922. Serial Ito. 583,835.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HAROLD A. FREEMAN,
a citizen of the United States. residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Silencers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a silencer that is adapted to be positioned on the base portions of various articles formed of glass earthenware, metal, etc., for the purpose of eliminating the noise produced when the articles are placed on a supporting surface, and likewise protecting the articles against breakage and also from marring the surfaces on which they are sitioned.
The principal ob ects o my invention are to provide a combined silencer and cushion that may be easily and cheaply produced, readily applied to the periphery of the base of various articles such as bowls, vases and various ofiice appliances that are usually placed on the tops of desks and tables and, further, to provide a device of the character described that is constructed so that it will firmly adhere to the article on which it is positioned, said device having its under face formed so that it will tend toadhere to the surface on which it is positioned, thereby holding the article on which it is placefd in r0 r osition u n a supportingsur ace. p v i th the foreg ding and other objects in view, my invention consists in the features of construction and combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an elevational view of a combined silencer and cushion of my improved construction, showing the same applied to thbase of a desk-set telephone;
l 'igure 2 is a perspective view of the combined silencer and cushioning device. the same being shaped to be applied to the rectangular base of a receptacle or appliance;
Figure 3 is a sectional perspective view of a portion of a combined silencer and cushioning device of my improved construction;
Figure 4 is a sectional perspective view of a portion of a modified form of the silencer and cushion.
The body of the combined silencer and cushion which is formed of rubber or analogous material is substantially Z-shaped in cross section and comprises a horizontally disposed base portion 10 from of which extends upwardly and inwardly an inclined web or wall 11 and formed integral with the upper edge of said web or wall and occupying a osition directly above the central portion or the base 10 is a relatively narrow flange 12, and that portion thereof that projects beyond the wall or web 11 is provided with an inclined or beveled under surface 13.
The combined silencer and cushion thus constructed may be in the form of a ring, as illustrated in Figures 1 and 3, or it may be square or rectangular as shown in Figure 2, the shape of the device depending, of course, upon the contour of the base portion of the article to which said device is to be applied. The support engaging underface o the base 10 is provided with a shallow annular groove 14 that is so undercut as to be substantially dove-tail shape in cross section, thereby providing a pair of opposltely disposed inwardly inclined antislippage shoulders 15, the edges at the lower ends of said shoulders being adapted to engage the surface upon which the device is positioned and resist movement of the device in any direction.
Formed in the upper face of base 10 and suitably spaced apart are recesses 16, which when the silencer is positioned on an article perform the functions of vacuum pockets to cause the device to firmly adhere to the article. If desired, the inner or under face of the inclined wall or web 11 may be provided with these vacuum pocket forming recesses 17, as illustrated in Figures 2 and 4, thus providing additional means for insuring the retention of the'device upon the receptacle or appliance.
Inasmuch as the wall or web 11 overlies the greater portion of the base 10. a horizontally disposed V-shaped article-receiving channel is produced between the parts 10 and 11. which channel receives the base of an article such as a bowl, vase, telephone stand, or oflice appliance. and when applied to such an article the latter may be placed on a metal, glass or finished wood surface without noise and without marring the surface and also without danger of breaking the base portion of the article to which the combined silencer and cushion is applied. The flange 12 projects outwardly a short distance from the wall of the web 11 in order the outer edgeto form a part that may be readily engaged when the device is removed from the base portion of an article or appliance.
A combined silencer and cushion of my improved construction is comparatively simple, may be easily and cheaply produced, and is very effective in performing its intended functions.
It will be understood that minor changes in the size, form and construction of the various parts of my improved silencer and cushion may be made and substituted for those herein shown and described without departing from the spirit of my invention, the scope of which is set forth in the appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. A combined silencer and cushion composed of rubber, the body of said combined silencer and cushion being substantially Z- shaped in cross section and having formed in the under surface of its base a continuous channel to provide anti-slippage shoulders.
52. A combined silencer and cushion composed of rubber, the body of said combined silencer and cushion being substantially Z- shaped in cross section and having formed in the under surface of its base a recess at the edges of which are formed abrupt inwardly inclined anti-slippage shoulders.
3. A combined silencer and cushion composed of rubber, the body of said combined silencer and cushion being substantially Z- shaped in cross section and there being a plurality of recesses formed in the upper face of the base portion of the combined silencer and cushion forming suction cups.
4. A combined silencer and cushion composed of rubber. the body of said combined silencer and cushion being substantially Z- shaped in cross section and there being a series of shallow recesses formed in the inner face of the inclined web between the base and upper portions of the Z-shaped body of the device and providing suction cups.
' 5. A combined silencer and cushion formed of rubber, the body of which combined silencer and cushion is substantially Z- shaped in cross section, there being inset shoulders formed in the under face of the base of the Z-shaped body, and there being shallow recesses formed in the upper face of the base of said Z-shaped body providing suction cups.
6. A combined silencer and cushion formed of rubber, the body of which combined silencer and cushion is substantially Z-shaped in cross section, there being inset shoulders formed in the under face of the base of the Z-shaped body, there being shallow recesses formed in the upper face of the base of said Z-shaped body, and there being shallow recesses formed in the inner face of the inclined web or wall of the Z-shaped body, said recesses providing suction cups for the purpose described.
7. A combined silencer and cushion comprising an endless resilient member adapted to engage only the periphery of the base of an article and having a V-shaped article receiving channel formed on the inner side thereof and an undercut channel in the under side thereof.
8. A combined silencer and cushion comprising an endless resilient member adapted to engage only the periphery of the base of an article and having a V-shaped articlereceiving channel formed on the inner side thereof, the lower wall of said channel being wider than the upper wall thereof and provided with ananti-slippage channel.
9. A combined silencer and cushion comprising an endless resilient member having a V-shaped channel formed on the under side thereof, and the walls of said channel being recessed to provide a plurality of suction cups.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
HAROLD A. FREEMAN.
