IMPROVEMENT IN ILLUMINATING v AULT-COVERS.

To all whom it may concern Be it` known that I, Timelines HYATT, of New York, in the county of New York and in ,the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ventilating Roof or Pavement Plates 5 and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, making a part of this specification, in whic Figure l is a plan view of the upper side of a vault or pavement tile protected by my improved coveriug, and Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the sa1ne.

Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.

The design of my invention is to enable illuminating vault-covers, pavement-tiles, Sie., t-o be easily and thoroughly protected against leakage, and their upper or bearing surfaces made to furnish a iirm bearing for the foot; to which end it consists in a vault-cover, pavement-tiles,.&c'., inelosed by means of a rubber shield, (with or without bearingpoi1'1ts,) which forms a packing for its illuminating lenses, and between said tile and its surrounding frame, substantially as and for the purpose iereinafter specified.

In the annexed drawing, A represents a tile provided with a number of light-openings, within each of which is secured a buttonhead illuminating-lens, B, while said tile in turn rests within and is inelosed by means of a surrounding frame, C. Before the lenses B are placed in position, the upper surface, edge, and lower'surfaee, near the latter, are covered with a rubber shield, I), which should be molded to shape so as to iit snugly to and upon said tile. Suitable openings, which correspond in size, shape, and position to the light openings of the tile A, are provided within the shield D, so as to enable the lenses B to be placed in position, for the heads of which lenses said shield forms a packing, and enables a water-tight joint to be produced.

It' desired, tapering lenses may be employed, in which event the openings within the rubber would require to be as small as the lower end of the lens, so that when pressed downward to position the swelling sides of said lens would carry with it the edges of the rubber and cause it to lit into the space between said lens and the sides of the light-openings of the tile.

If the tile is to be walked upon or over, bearing-points l may be cast upon the shield D, and the surface of the lenses protected from abrasion.

Having thus fully set forth the nature and merits of my invention, what I claim as new is* A vault-cover, pavement-tile, Ste., inelosed by means of a rubber shield, (with or without bearing-points,) which forms a packing for its illuminating lenses and between said tile and its surrounding frame substantially as and for the purpose specified.
