c. MCCRAY RAIL FASTENER Filed Aug. 17 1922 Patented Apr. 17, 1923).
@FFWE- CUGE L. MGCRAY, 0F NORTON, VIRGINIA.
RAIL FASTENER.
Application filed August 17, 1922.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, CUGE L. MCURAY, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Norton, in the county of lVise and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rail Fasteners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in rail fasteners and has relation more particularly to a fastener. especially designed and adapted for use in connection with channel ties and it is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved fastener which operates to effectively maintain the rail in applied position upon the tie, yet permits a rail to be removed with out affecting the tie and in a manner whereby it is possible to remove a single tie of a roadbed without molesting ties adjacent thereto.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved device of this general character comprising engaging members co-acting with the tie and the portions of the rail flanges resting thereon together with means associated with said members to take up or compensate for any looseness of the members as may result from wear.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved rail fastener whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 isa fragmentary view partly in elevation andpartly insection illustrating a, rail fastening device constructed in accordance with an e bodiment of my invention';
Figure 2 is a fragmentary view in top plan of the structure" as illustrated in Fig me 1; y v Y, Figure '3 is ja sectional; viewatalreni substantially on the l1ne3--8 Of'FI'gHIG 2;
Serial No. 582,493.
the opposite end portions of the tie are of duplicate construction or arrangement the accompanying drawings illustrate only one end portion ofthe, tie. I As herein set. forth, the side walls 1 of the tie T are provided in their uppermarginal portions with transversely alined recesses 2 of requisite dimension and of a length to permit the ready insertion of a rail R therein or to be removed therefrom. The lower portions of the recesses 2 at the ends thereof are continued by the horizontally disposed slots 3 and 3, theslots 3 being of a greater width or depth than the slots 3 for the purpose to be hereafter referred to. q
Positioned within the tie T and substantially bridging the space between the recesses 2 is a block or sleeper 4 preferably of wood and upon which the railRseats or rests, said block or sleeper providing a cushion for the rail and more especially as the rolling stock travels thereover.
After a rail R has been properly seated or rested upon a tie T such rail is held against displacement by the holding members 5 which'are disposed across the tie-T and GXiIQDdflIIOHglI the slots 3 and 3. one end portion of each of the members 5 being provided with a head 6 which serves to limit the extent of movementof the'meinber 5 in one direction by contacting with a sidewall 1 as is clearly illustrated in Figure 2' of the accompanying drawings. The head '6 also adapted to receive an impact from a suitable implement to facilitate the proper applicationof the member 5. t i r The end portion of each of the members 5 remote from the head. 6 is continued-by shank T which extends, when applit'zd, beyond the adjacentsidewall .1 of the tieT and has engaged therewith anut. 8,-.whereb v the member 5 is effectively maintained in applied position or against displacement.
The inner longitudinal margin of, each of the members vfihasits upper-qiiortifqnidefined by a flange or lip 9 which overlies an'dhas close contact wit-h a base flange 10 of a rail R whereby the members 5, when applied, operate effectively to hold the rail R in workways position. v
The members at substantially the longitudinal center thereof are provided with depending'lugs 11 which extend below the upper portion of an applied block or sleeper 4: when the members 5 are in applied position, said lugs 11 being immediately adjacent to the block or sleeper 4 and thereby provide means whereby the block or sleeper 4c is held from moving or creeping lengthwise of the tie T and out of position below the rail R.
In order to assure the members 5, or more particularly the flanges or lips 9 thereof, having effective contact with the flanges 10 of the rail R and more especially to compensate for wear which may occur, the lugs 11 of each pair of members 5 associated with a rail are connected bya headed bolt 12, said bolt being freely disposed through the lugs 11 and through a groove or channel 1& provided in the upper or top face of the block or sleeper 4. I prefer that the head 15 of the bolt 12 contact with the lug 11 of the inner member 5 so that the clamping nut 16 threaded upon the bolt 12 will be associated with the lug ll of the outer member 5 in order that the nut 16 may be readily operated from the adjacent end of the tie T to force the members 5 inwardly of the rail R in the event wear or other action has caused the flanges or lips 9 of the members 5 to have loose engagement with the flanges The slot 3 hereinbefore referred to readily permits the proper passage of a lug 11 of a member 5 and while I have illustrated in the accompanying drawings a slot 3' at opposite sides of the recess 2 it is to be understood that ifdesired only one slot, such as 3, need be employed as it is possible to first apply one of the members 5 before a rail R is rested or seated upon the block or sleeper 4.
'From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a rail fastener constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the. convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
Iclaim: t t i 1. In combination with a channel tie pro vided withrecesses in its side walls, a block tinued by notches arranged within the tie and upon which a rail is adapted to seat, said rail extending within the recess in the side walls, members (to-acting with the side walls and adapted to overlie the flanges of the rail mounted upon the block, an end portion of each of the members being provided with a head, the opposite end portion being provided with a shank, and a member engagable with said shank and co-acting with the side wall of the tie to hold the member in applied position. a
2. The combination with a channel tie provided with recesses members received within said recesses engaging the opposite sides of the rail to hold the same in applied-position, said'members being provided with depending lugs, a bolt disposed through the lugs of the members, a nut threaded upon said bolt for contact with one of said lugs, the head of the bolt having contact with the other lug.
3. The combination with a channel tie and a block seated therein, the side walls of the tie being provided with recesses and a rail freely received within the recesses and resting upon the block; of a member of a length to bridge the space between the side walls of a tie, one end portion of the member being provided with a head, the opposite end portion of the member being provided with a shank, and a member engageable with said shank for co-action with the side wall of the tie to hold the member in applied position.
f; The combination with a channel tie and a block seated therein, the side walls of the tie being provided with recesses and a. rail freely received within the recesses and resting upon the block; of a member ofa length to bridge the space between the side walls of a tie, one end portion of the member being provided with a head, the opposite end portion of the member being provided with a shank, and a member engageable with said shank for co-action with the side wall of the tie to hold the member in applied position, the base portions of the recess being conto receive said member when in applied position.
' 5. The combination with a channel tie provided with recesses members received within the recesses engaging the opposite sides of the rail to hold the same in applied position, and means common to said members for moving the same into clamping action with the rails.
6. The combination with a channel tie provided. with recesses to receive a rail, members received within the recesses engaging the opposite sides of the rail to hold the same in applied position, and a member associated with said first named members for moving the first named members into clamping engagment with the rail.
7...The' combination with a channel tie to receive arail,
to receive a rail,
block Within the tie upon which the .rail
rests, the upper surface of the block being 1 provided with a channel to receive said second named member.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature.
