SWAGING PRESS.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, KARL Bonnie, residing at Esseu-on-the-R-uhr, Germany, a citi- Zen of the German Republic, have invented 5 a certain new and useful Improvement in a Swaging Prcss, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to swaging presses adapted for the manufacture of outwardly flanged work-pieces, the die of Wl'llCll 1s provided with a. block or holder. More particularly, it is a. special object of this 1nvention to provide a device for presses of the kind specified which will facilitate an accurate adjusting of the work relatively to the tool, or, in other words, an easy displacement of the work while mounted on the die block before the pressing operation has commenced, without in any way whatever impairing the shaping of said work-plece. An embodiment of the subject matter of this invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing by way of example in which Fig. 1 shows a diagrammatical longitudinal section and Fig. 2 a plan view appertaining thereto.
W'ithin that portion of the annular die A of the press facing the stamp (not shown). there are arranged a plurality of B0 cylindrically-shaped bore holes a uniforinly distributed across the periphery of said portion. in each of which there is inserted a ball B. The depth of said bore holes a is so dimensioned, that the balls B will come as to protrude beyond the front face a of the die A. lVithin the die-block C of the press there is provided a. bore hole 0 disposed coaxially to the longitudinal axis of the die-block, within which bore hole a to plate D is shiftably mounted to rotate. This plate D is moreover guided vertically by intervention of a cylindrical extension member d in a bore hole 0 formed in the die-block C and disposed coaxially to the bore 0 In addition, the plate D is subject to the action of springs E tending to maintain the plate in a position in which its front end d facing the stamp, will project beyond the corresponding front end of the die holder C. I/Vithin that portion of the plate D facing the stamp, there are arranged bore holes (Z in the same way as in the case of the die A, in which there are also inserted balls F protruding beyond the front face (Z of the plate D.
Before the pressing operation begins and after the work has been placed on the balls B, the die holder C is raised for such an extent until also the balls F have entered into contact with the work, so that, as a result, this latter will now rest on the. balls" B and F. In consequence thereof, the work, the weight of which in many cases, say, for instance in that of marine boiler ends, is very considerable, may be shifted at Will and with but very slight trouble relatively to the die until it has been placed in the proper position required for the pressing operation. This device yields the possibility, moreover, to raise the die-block before the pressing operation has set in, and without interferring with the easy adjusting of the work, for such an extent that the dieblock is enabled to support the work in the proper manner required to avoid the formaion of corrugations on the work, and this even prior to the commencement of the shaping operation by the stamp and die. During the pressing, firstly the stamp forces the plate D, counter to the action of the springs E, so far back into the die-block C, until the balls F of said plate lie perfectly flush with the front face of the die-block. Thereupon, the stamp and the die-block continue their motion at the same speed.
In a press of the class described an annular die member. a die block surrounded by said annular die member and movable relatively thereto in axial direction, a plate resiliently mounted on said die block and a plurality of antifriction means all carried by said plate, said antifriction means normally extending beyond the front face of the die block for supporting the work to be acted upon before the pressing operation and adapted to be displaced by the work in unison with said plate behind the front face of the die block during the pressing operation.

In a press of the class described an annular die member, a die block surrounded by said die member and movable relatively thereto in axial direction, antifriction means carried by said die member for supporting the work to be acted upon, and antifriction means resiliently mounted on said die block, said last named antifriction means normally extending beyond the front face of the die block for supporting the Work to be acted upon before the pressing operation and adapted to be displaced by the Work behind the front face of the die block during the pressing operation.

In a" press of the class describedan annular die member, a die block surrounded by said annular die member and movable relatively thereto in axial direction, a plate rotatably and resiliently mounted on said die block and a plurality of antifriction means all carried by said plate, said antifriction means normally extending beyond the front face of the die block for supporting the Work to be acted upon before the pressing operation and adapted to be displaced by the \YO1l{ in unison with said plate behind the front face of the die block during the pressing operation.
5. Ina press of the class described an annular die member having a plurality of antifriotion means mounted thereon for supporting the Work to be acted upon, a die block surrounded by said annular die member and movable relatively thereto in axial direction, a plate rotatably and resiliently mounted on'said die block and a plurality of antifriction means carried by said plate, said last named antifriction means normally extending beyond the front face of the die block for supporting the Work to be acted upon before the pressing operation and adapted to be displaced by the Work in unison with said plate behind the front face of r.
