' Be it known that PAUL MILLEB, a citizen 0f the United States, residing a1; Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and Stute of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Im rovements in Expanding Reamers Qji w ich-the following is a specification.
My inmntion rela teS to an improvement in expanding reamers.
The object is to provide an article 0f the character described, which may be made in different sizes, and which rea'mer will do the work that heretofore it required six times the nurnber 0f t001s to do, my present inventio1i being made to ream any desired size of hole, say one and one-half t0 twelve inches (11 to 12") in diameter, and it has an adjustment of from one-thousandth of an inc.h upward. y
The invention includes comparatively few parts, easy t0 construct, accurate und effective in operation, and rigid and durable when assembled.

This collar is of a diameter to just fit the cylindrical portion @f the bore of the body, and its location is such that it abuts against the shoulder 31 at the outer end of the socket when in plaoe, thu s making a rigid connection between the guiding bar B and the body when th'e screws 7 are turned securely against the flat side 6013' the end 4 of the bar.
As shown in Figs. 2 and 5, the blades D are fitted within t he radialslots l, in position to be 'simultaneously adjusted radially, their inner edges tapering, as shown in Fig. 5.
Cones- C, of which twelve a1e shown in Fig. 4, are in graduated size, and are adapted to enter the flaring -tapering mouth of the bore 0f the tool-body, where they are thread6d upon the stee1 center guiding-bar B, their function being to cause a uniform adjustment outwardly 0f the steel bla.des with absolute precision throughout their length. These are inserted from the smallest cone t0 the next size larger, etc., and forced inwardly upon the center guiding bar until the cones of th e required size are in position in engagement with the inner tapering edges of 1the blades t0 give them the required outward adjustment.
Threads 8, preferabl eighteen 10 th inch, are cut on the gui in -bar B near the end, and a round nut 9 of which there may be any number of difierent sizes, two only b ing shown in Fig. 16) is adapted 10 be screwed there'on. A wrench 10, (as shown in Fig. 17) with a lever 11, (aus shown in Fig. 20) for operating it, is provided for turning the round nut on the thread and up against the cone, whereby the latter are forced along the leng*th of the guidingbar B, and with uniform pressure outwnrdly against the blades.

A spanner- Wronch 23 is provided for adjusting these nuts 17 and 21.
Split two-piece clamp supports E and F, re resentin difl'erent sizes, are inserted dutsi e of the ody portion A, am]. between the blades, and these arge split so as to be formed into two taper shaped pieces. Holes 24 are formed part way in eac h section t0 receive the screws 25 which hold them in place; and by reason of their tapering slots 26 force the seotions apart and rigidl in contact with the Oppos1te sides of the Klade's.
From the foregoing, it will be seen that a solid, all-metal structure is provid'ed, which may be taken apart, und the various parts of which n'1ay be renewed and replaced. at any time, anal which, by reason of the speoial form of the various parts and thev tools required t0 separate or assemble them ca.nnot be tampered with by an unauthorized penson, or one who is not provided with the specia1 tools for the urpose.
Thus I have-provi ed a novel, ingenious expanding reamer which is effective in the accomplishment of the functions for which it is intended. I claim:

2. An expanding reamer including u counterbored body, the outer end of the bore tapering and radially slo'tted, a center guiding-bar rigidl secured in, und oolnc1ding with, the long1tudinal axis of the body, and having t'hreads at 01 near 'its free end, bladeS fittecl in the slots, a plurality of graduated cones.slidably mounted up n the bar and presenting a smooth conical surface to engage the inner edge of the blades, a nut screwed on the threads of the bar for forcing tshecones endwise up0n the latter und against the inner edges of the blades for adjustini tl1e latter outwardly simultaneously.

5. An expanding reamer including a counterbored body, the outer end 0f the bore tapering ancl radially slotted, a center guiding-bar rigidlv secured in, and coinciding having threads at or near its free end, blades fitter]. in the slots, cones slida'bly n1ounted upon the bar am] presenting a smooth conical surlace to engage the inner edges of the blades, a nut serewed on th e threads of the bar for forcing tl'1e oones endwise upon the latter and against the inner edges 0f the blades for adjusting the latter outwardly simultaneously, split two-piece clamp supports, the sections of which taper und have holes vformed partly in each section and adapted to be inserted between the blades, and scre.ws having tapering heads which extend into said holes and into the body, which when screwed in pl ace force the sections of' the clamps in opposite direotions against the .portion c0uI1terb0red, the outer ends of the bore conical, and that p0rtion of the tool 'radially slotted. blades fittedto -the slots am]. lmving tapering inner edges, a center g'uiding-bar secured. within the bare cf tha body, graduated cones adjustable thereon and presenting a smooth conical surfaoe and bearing against the inner edges of the blacles, means achustable upon the guiding-bar for forcing the cones lengthwise, means screwed into the outer end of tha body to forma a support for the outar end 0f the guiding-bar, and means screwed upon the body to form lateral support for each end of the blades.
7. In an expanding reamer, the combination with. a radially slotted counterbored body having a socket at the inner end of the bare, of a center guiding-bar having one end fitted to the socket, said end flat on one side, screws extending into the body against the flat side for holding the guidebar securely in the socket, and a wund nut screwed into the outer end of the body, and having a hole which receives and forms a bearing f0r the onter end 0f the guiding bar, cones slidably mounted on the guiding bar, and blades fitted t0 the s1ots in posit1on 'bo be uniformly acljusted by the cones.
8. In an expanding reamer, the combination with a counterbored body radially slotted, blades fitted to said slots, means for adjusting the several blades outwardly simultaneously, split clamps, made of tapering sections having holes formed part in be adjacent edgres of aach section, and screws having tapering heacls which extend through said holes into the body, which when driven home force the sections outwardly, and crowd them against the sides 0f the blades forming rigid lateral supports therefor.
9. In an expanding reamer, the combination With a counterbored body radially slotted, blades fitted t0 said. slots, adjus'tabl@ means for supporting the ends 0f the blades, means f0r adjusting the several blacles outwardly simultaneously, split clamps made 0f tapering sections having holes formecl part in the adj'aoent edges of each section, and s0rews having tapering heacls which extend through said holes into the body, which when lriven home, force the sectionsoutwardly and crowd them against the sides 0f blades forming rigid lateral supports therefor.

Aln expanding reamer counterbored and radially slotbed and having a sacket at the inner end of the bore of lass diam@ter than the adjacent bore, a guiding bar having an end fitted to the socket and provideol with a collar Which fits the bore adjaoent to tha socket, means for securing the end rigidly in place in tl1e socket, graduated oones adjustable on the guiding bar, blades fitted t0 the radial slots against the inner edges of Which the oones engage, a round nut screwed into the outer end of the bare against the outer ends of the blades and having a hole to receive the outer end of the guiding bar and a nut screwed 0n the 0uter end of the body and engaging and holdingthe outer ends of the blacles.
13. An expanding reamer including a counterbored body having radial slots, blades fitted 1t0 and movable in said slots wilsh their several inner edges presenting a single continuous conical formation, a plurahty 01 graduated wedging elements adapted to engage and ba l'orced simultaneously and uniformly against the inner edges of the blades whereby to adjust the several blades simultaneously ancl uniformly.
14. An expanding reamer including a counterbored body having radial slots, blades fitted o0 and mavable in said slots with their several inne;f edges presenting a single c0ntinuous conical formation, a plurahty of round graduated wedging elements adapted i o engaga and;ba forced simultaneously and uniformlyaminst the inner edges 0f the blades 'whereby to adjust the several blades simulta'neously and uniformly and means for forcing said elements endwise in the conical spaoes formed by the inner edges of the blades.
15. An expanding reamer including a counterhored body having radial slots, blacles fitted to anal adjustable in said slots, said blades each having a single continuous tapering inner edge, a cnbering bar located in the axial center of the reamer, a plurality of wedgina deVi0es adapted 1to be sliclably mounted 011 the bar in position to engage the inner edges of tha several blades, maans for forcing said devices end-wise 010 ihl1a bar to adjust the blades andl means for 100king the blades in plane in their respectbive slots, after having been adjustecl.

Center guiding-rod having a cylindrical portion Which fits and is held in the cylindrical portion of the bore, and provided with screw thxeads, radially adjustable blades, oones slidably mounted on the rod for engaging the inner edges of the blades, and simultaneously adjusting them uniformly throughout their length, and a nut screwed on the threads of the rod for adjusting the cones.
17. An expanding reamer including a body having n bore formed throughout its center, a portion 0f Which is cylindrical a center guiding rod having a cylindrical portion which fits and is held in the eylindrical portion of the bore, und provided with scrmv-threads, radially adjustable blades, cones slidably mounted on the rod for engaging the, inner edges of the blades, und simultapeously adjusting them uniformly throughout their length. a nut screwed 011 the threads of the rod for adjusting the cones, and nuts secured 011 the body portion ab opposite ends of the blades for lockingthe latter in adjusted position.
18. An expanding reamer inoluding a body having a bore formed throughout its 0enter, a portion of Which is cylindrical, a center guiding rod having a cylindri0al portiou which fits and is held in the cylindrical portion of the bore, and rovided with scxeW-threads, raflially a justable portion a.t opposite ends of the blades for locking the latter in adjusted position, and a nut serewed into the outer end of' the body and having a central hole t0 hold .and support the outer end 0f the rod.
19. An expanding reamer including a counterbored radially slotted body portion, a portion of the bore being cylindrical, und one end of the bore gradually taperinp; from the cylindrica] portion to the end, a center guiding I'0d insertable in the bore by way 0f said tapering portion of the bore, said rod having a threaded outer end and a cylindrical portion adapted to fit the cylindrical portion of the b011=l and be secured therein, a nut screwed on the threads, blades fitted t0 and adjustable in the slots, elements slidably mounted: 011 the rod engaging the inner edges of the blades and adjustable on the rod by the turning 0f the nut, und means for cenbering and supporting the outer end of the 1'0d in the tapering end of the body.
