Be 1t known that I, JAMES M. MILLS, a
" citizen ot' the United States, and a resident ot Helena, in the county of Lewis' and Clark and State of Montana, have invented a new and Improved Grease Gun', of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in grease guns, an object of the invention being to provide a device of this type'having a hinged, spring-held nozzle which can be moved to one side and permit the gun to be loaded at the nozzle end. Another obj ect is to provide'an improved plunger for use with this'type of grease gun.
A further object is to provide a' construction of gun and plunger which will be strong. durable and practical in the uses for which it is intended. liVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in vcertain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts which will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.

1 represents the cylindrical casing or barrel of the grease gun, which is externally threaded at one end for the reception of a threaded cap 2. The barrel 1 is provided with a fixed ring 3 at its intermediate portion and a movable ring 4 is located around the barrel 1 adjacent the fixed ring 3 and a coil spring 5 is positioned around the barrel 1 between the fixed ring 3 and the movable ring 4.
A. nozzle 6, of the usual shape, is made integral with a semicylindrical nozzle-carryr ing member 7 which is of a cross-sectional. shape to fit against the barrel 1. The nozzle 6 is formed with a flange 8 constituting a cup or collar adapted to fit around the end of the barrel` and an internal annular shoulder 9 at the base of the flange 8 engages the barrel l. and securely held against the barrel by the coil spring 5.
The member 7 is bifurcated at its upper end, forming arms 10 which are pivotally secured to the movable ring 4 on studs 11. The member 7 is of enlarged diameter at its upper end, as shown at 12, so that the mem` ber 7 will fit over the xedring 3.
The cap 2 is perforated to accommodate a plunger rod 14, to the outer end of which rod any suitable handle '15 is attached. The inner end of the plunger rod is ot' reduced diameter, Jforming a shoulder 16 on the rod; and it is on this reduced end of the plunger rod, between the shoulder 16 and a nut 17 screwed on to the lower, threaded end ofthe rod, that my improved plunger' is carried.
The plunger is barrel-shaped and comprises two plunger heads 18 spaced apart to form an air space 18a between them. Packing rings 19 are provided around the rod 14V in recesses in the plunger heads. The plunger heads are formed with integral externally threaded nipples 20, one of the nipples engaging the shoulder 1G and the other engaging a coil spring 21 located around the rod between the nut 17 and the nipple.
A fieXible cover 22, of leather or other suitable material, encases the plunger heads and is secured tightly around the heads by means of washers 23 and nuts 24,l the latter screwed on to the nipples 20 against the washers, pressing the fiexible casing 22 against the plunger heads 18.
The operation is as follows: The gun is filled at the nozzle end, In order to swing the nozzle out of the way, as shown in dotand-dash lines in Figure 1, the member 7 is moved longitudinally to compress the spring 5 unt'l the flange 8, forming the cup engaging the end of' the barrel, is free in the barrel, when the nozzle can be swung to one side. Then the gunl has been loaded, the nozzle is again located over the end of the barrel, the .spring 5 holding the nozzle firmly against the end of the barrelthe iiange S and shoulder 9 forming a tight coupling with the barrel.
As has been noted. the plunger is formed with an air chamber 18". The spring Q1 exerts pressure on one of the plunger heads 1S to compress the air in the chamber' 18- and form an air cushion. The compression of the air in the chamber maintains the flexible casing 9.9, in expanded position and, consequently, in4 closed engagement with the inner wall of the barrel.
Various slight changes and alterations might be made in the general formof the parts described without departing from my invention, and, hence, I do not limit myseltl to the precise details set forth but consider myself at liberty to make such slight changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit-and scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
l. A 'grease gun including a barrel, a removable nozzle receiving one end of the barrel, movable and Xed parts carried by the barrel, the movable part being hingedly connected to the nozzle, and a spring around the barrel between said movable and fixed parts.
2. A grease gun comprising a barrel, a plunger in the barrel, a fixed ring on the barrel, a movable ring on the barrel, a spring around the barrel between said rings, and a nozzle at the lower end of the barrel hingedly connected to said movable ring.A
A grease gun comprising a barrel, a plunger in the barrel, a lined ring on the barrel, a movable ring on the barrel, a spring around the barrel between said rings, a semicylindrical nozzle-carrying member pivotally connected to said movable ring, and a nozzle carried by said member and ritt-ing over the end of said barrel.`

A grease gun comprising a barrel, a plunger in the barrel, a lixed ring on the barrel, a movable ring on the barrel, a spring around the barrel between said rings, a semicylindrical nozzle-carrying member pivot ally connected to said movable ring, a nozzle carried by said member and fitting over the end of said barrel, a flange on said nozzle forming a cup fitting around the end of said barrel, and an internal annular shoulder in said nozzle engaging the end of said barrel, said nozzle-carrying member bifurcated at one end forming a pair of arms, and said arms pivotally secured to said movable ring.
5. A grease gun including a barrel, a sliding piece on the barrel, a member hinged to said sliding piece, a nozzle carried by said member and adapted to be removably mounted on the discharge end of the barrel` a collar fixed on the barrel and located between the sliding piece and the discharge end o't' the barrel, and a compression spring coiled around the barrel between said collar and said sliding piece.
G. A grease gun including a barrel, a sliding piece on the barrel, a member hinged to' said piece, a nozzle carried by said member and adapted to be removably mounted on the discharge end of the barrel, a spring around the barrel, and means on the barrel for engaging the opposite ends ot' the spring` said means including said sliding piece.
