IM PROVEMENT IN CASTER-BOTTLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 145,138, dated December 2, 1873; application filed August 6, 1873.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, AUGUST WEBER, of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented an Improvement in Bottles for Casters, &c., ofv which the following is a correct specification:
In Letters Patent No. 140,564, granted to me, a piston is pressed down by a rod into a cylinder to eject sauce, or other liquid, or semiliquid from a nipple at the lower part of the bottle.
My present invention is an improvement upon the aforesaid device; and consists in a stopper or valve for the nipple combined with said piston, and a means for raising such valve as the piston is pressed down. Thereby the nipple is etlectually closed when not in use, so that leakage is prevented, and the act of pressing down the ejecting-piston draws up the valve to open the nipple.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a vertical section of the bottle and an elevation of .the piston and rod. Fig. 2 is a separate section of the cap. Fig. 3 shows the slotted cylinder. Fig. 4 represents the piston and rod detached; and Fig. 5 is an elevation of the valve and rod.
The bottle a, cap c, rod d, spring c', piston k, cylinder s, and nipple 1" correspond generally with those in aforesaid patent, except that the cap c may have a cork instead of a screw for securing it into the bottle, and the piston and its rod act the same, and are similarly constructed, except that the rod d is hollow, andV receives the stem t of the valve u, and a pin, fv, projects from this stem through the slot 2 in the rod d, and it is drawn up as the rod d is depressed, thereby opening the nipple 7. This is accomplished by means of the cylinder 5 that surrounds the rod d, and is kept in position by the collars 6 and 7, but is free to be partially rotated around that rod by means of a pin, 8, upon the rod d entering an inclined slot, 9, in said cylinder 5. The pin o enters the inclined slot l0 in this cylinder 5, so that as that cylinder 5 is partially revolved in one direction, by the rod d being pushed down, the stem t and valve are raised by this slot 10, and the reverse movement ofthe rod d by the action of the spring i causes the valve to press down upon its seat.
If grooves are made within the cap, or the cylinder 5 is made a fixture, then the valve will be operated in consequence of a partial revolution given to the rod d.
The valve may be of rubber or othensnitak ble material, and elastic packin gs may be provided to prevent moisture passing to the cylinder 5 or spring c'.
I claim as my invention- The valve u for the nipple r, in combination with the piston k and rod d, and mechanism connectingthe valve-stem to the piston-rod d, substantially as set forth, so as to Withdraw the valve as the piston-rod is forced down, substantially as set forth.
