Be it known that I, Davie L. A. LARsoN- NnUR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State 'of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Governors, of,4
which the following is a description.
My invention relates to that general class of devices known as governors, and relates particularly to an improved governor for internal combustion engines or the like. Tlreinvention has among its objects the production of a simple, practical, compact, du-4 rable, efficientand satisfactory governor of `the kind described, for use Wherever found applicable. It has particularly as an object the production of a simple governor which may be adjusted as desired Without disturbing the Working parts, and which will automatically control the motor, the 'same working substantially instantaneously and noise- /lessly Many other objects and advantages preferred form of my device;
,of the construction herein shown and described Will be obvious to those skilled in the art from the disclosures herein given.
To this end my invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of parts herein shown and de-A scribed, and more particularly pointed out in the claims.

Referring to the drawings, 1 represents a shown, and which is'slidably mounted on a guide rod 8, carried by a member 7 or its equivalent. I have shown the valve rod or guide 8 braced at its upper end by -means lof member 9, Which,v,\vhen employed, may be of the desired size and shape, preferably Sothat it does not impede the flow of the mixture passing through the casing. The valve is normally maintained open and in the position, as shown in Figures 1 and 2, by aspring 10 bearing against 'the valve and against ame'mber 11. 'i
In the construction shown in Figures 1 and 2, member 11 is extended and provided with teeth 12 arranged to cooperate with a small pinion 13 on a shaft or rod 14,' which projects to the exterior of the casing and is promeans of which part 15 may be adjusted and 'secured in 'place to provide-a desired adjustment. The part 15 and the screws 18 may be secured against tampering or Vunauthorized adjusting by means of a Wire 20 and seal-20, it being understood that any equivalent may be provided for the purpose. Ar-
ranged at the inlet end of the casing I provide aVenturi tube 16, which has a tendency to cause a thorough mixture or co-mixture of the passing charge as it passes through thev governor, thereby increasing the effi'- ciency of the mixture. The valve also has a tendency to increase the mixing. If desired,
` ports or openings 19 may be arranged as shown, the number of the same, as .well as the size, being as preferred. These permit the passage of a portion of the mixture through the governor when thevalve is entirely closed. so that at least some charge will pass to the engine and prevent its stopping, or as it is termed. being killed.
In using the device, the same is installed as before mentioned, between the carbureter and the engine, and the member .ll set at the desired point to give the desired tension on the spring l0. \Vhen the engine is speeded up, the passing mixture, owing to.
its high velocity, tends to move the valve toward its closed position, thereby shutting oif'a portion of the mixture to the engine, causing it to slow down. The member l1 may be so adjusted as to give just the desired tension on the spring so that the device will operatewhen the engine reaches the speed which it\i s desired as the maximum, at the time the valve will be sluit. It will be noted that the devree consists of but few parts,
and that there are no pockets or projecting parts which will iollect or pocket the vapor, causing condensation and accumulation of the gases or hydro-carbon particles. The parts are so designed and constructed that the device at the same time not only does not'impede the passage of the mixture, but has a tendency to cause a thorough mixing action, thereby improving the charge.
In the construction shown in Figures 5A and 6, 21 represents the casing, 22 the upper iange, 23 the rod, and 24 the spring. Arranged on the iod and bearing against the spring is a member 25 which is arranged to ybe controlled by a cam member or members 26, mounted on the sliaftor rod 27, and secured thereon by screw 28 or equivalent means. Rod 27 is secured to a member 29 corresponding to the member 15. shown in.

In this case, inember 45 is provided with an internal thread arranged to engage with the thread 47 4 on the rod 43, and is provided with an extending part 46, provided with spiral thread arranged to mesh with the' spiral thread 49 on the rod 48. Rod 4S is provided with an end 50 similar to that previously described. lith this construction, rotation of the rod 43 causes a rotation of member 45 which is in threaded engagement With rod 43, and the same adjusts up and down on the rod, regulating the pressure of the spring.
` valve It Will be particularly noted in the preceding that'the device may be so adjusted and controlled on the exterior of the casing that any given speed will cause the valve to close or partially close, thereby controlling or regulating the operation of the engine. The device may be locked against tampering.
Having thus described my invention, it is obvious that various immaterial modifications may be made in the same without departing from the spirit' of my invention; hence I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the exact form, construction, arrangement and combination of parts herein shown ,and described or uses nientioned.
IVhat I claim as new and desire to sccure by Letters Patent is:
l. A governor of the character described comprising a casing having an inlet and an outlet with a widened portion intermediate said inlet and said outlet, a valve supportslidably mounted on said stein, an extension projecting into the widened portion of `the casing, said extension contacting with the when the same is in a closed position, a plurality of apertures passing through said extension to provide a passageway when the valve is closed, a spring for normally urging said valve in an open position, and means for varying the pressure necessary to close the valve.
2. A governor of the character described comprising a casing having an inlet and an outlet with a widened portion intermediate said inlet and Said outlet` a valve supporting, stem disposed within the casing, a valve slidably mounted on said stem, anextension projecting into the widened portion of the casing, said valve when in a closed position abutting against the extension, -a plurality of apertures passing-through said extension to provide a passageway when the valve is closed, a spring for normally urging said valve in an open position, and
lmeans for varying the pressure necessary to close the valve, said means Vcomprising an elongated member having gear teeth thereon slidably mounted on the stem and a transverse member passing through said casing and having a pinion cooperatingwith said gear teeth for shifting said slidable member.
