To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that l, NILsoN D. ANnrRsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bremerton, in the county of Kitsap and State of 17V ashington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vending Devices; and l do hereby declare the following` to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The object of the invention is to provide a simple and attractive vending device whereby legitimate stimulation of trade may be afforded by offering for sale objects having a commercial value corresponding with the amount charged or demanded of a purchaser for the privilege of making a selection from a number of the objects with the possibility of choosing one which secretly, and unknown to the purchaser, is identified by position or otherwise as entitling the purchaser to a premium and which designation is normally concealed by the object offered for sale and is exposed by the removal of such object by the purchaser from the vending device; and more particularly to provide a` device embodying a modification of the construction of a device for a similar purpose covered by the copending application filed of even date herewith, Serial Number 464,092; and with this object in view the invention consists in a construction and combination of part-s of which a preferred embodiment is shown in the drawing, wherein:

Figure l is a view of an apparatus embodying the invention, certain of the vendible objects being omitted to expose the designating characters by which they are normally concealed from the purchaser, a portion also of the retaining web or sheet being broken away.

Figure 3 is a view of a modified construction of the apparatus in which the filler member is employed, certain of the objects as in Figure 1, being` omitted and a portion of the retaining web or sheet being broken away.

ing web or sheet 11-of flexible paper or like material which may readily be torn and which is provided at suitable intervals with openings 12 for the reception of the shanks m of collar buttons 13 or like objects to be vended, the bases 14 of the objects being arranged upon the surface of the base and between the plane of the same and the retaining web or sheet and the terminal enlarged heads 15 of said obj ects being arranged exteriorly of the retaining` web or sheet so as to be readily grasped by the purchaser.

Upon j the surface of the base directly under each of the openings in the retaining web or sheet is arran ed a character or number to designate di erent objects as premiums, or some of the seats or Spaces or bearing contacts` of the bases of the objects may be left blank and only one or two may be provided with characters indicatingpremiums, as preferred by the vendor or manufacturer, but in either case the space or portion of the surface of the base of the device which is to be covered in practice by the base of the vendible object is designed or adapted to receive said mark, so that said character is concealed by the object and cannot be exposed except by t-he selection and removal of the object.

The retaining web or sheet, around the stein or shank openingtherein and of a diameter corresponding with tlat of the base of the object, is provided with a perforated or tear line 16 so that when the head of an object is grasped and the object drawn forward, it carries with it the detachable portion of the retaining web or sheet and thereby leaves an opening through which the premium designating character may readily be seen, if there is such a character assigned to the vendible object which has been selected.

rl`he foregoing' description applies equally to both forms of the vending device illustrated respectively in Figures 1 and 2, and Figures 3 and 4, and in Figures 3 and d, in addition to the features indicated, there is employed a filler board or member 17, of card board or the like, attached to the surface of the base l() between the base and the retaining web or sheet, and provided with a. series of openings 18 for the respective recept-ion of the bases or backs of the vendible objects so as to definitely retain the latter `in proper relation to the base and prevent any movement of the vending device from causing displacement of the objects or applying to the web or sheet such strain as would tend to tear or mutilate the saine. This construction as shown in Figures 3 and 4, including the iiller, is particularly designed for use when the device may be subjected to more or less rough or careless handling or when the device is to be shipped or transported by mail or otherwise, with the vendible objects in operative position there on.

Having thus described the invention, what I claim is l. A Vending device having a base, vendible articles for individual removal by vendees, said articles being disposed on said base means to indicate the Winner of a con* test concealed by said articles, a retaining Web for said articles associated with the base and said articles extending through said web to facilitate engagement or removal.

2. A vending device having a base, vendible articles for individual removal by Vendees, said objects being disposed on said base, means to indicate the Winner' of a contest lconcealed by said articles, a retaining web for said articles associated with the base, said articles extending through said web to facilitate engagement for removal, and said Web having weakened portions surrounding said articles disposed in the path of removal of said articles.

3. A vending device having a base, vendible articles disposed on said base, means to indicate the Winner of a contest concealed by said article, a retaining web for said articles, means intermediate said base and retaining means cooperating with the articles to resist undue unlatera displacement of the articles.
