Be it known that I, JOHN J. METZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Meadville, in the county of Crawford and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Train-Grder Holders, of which the following is a specification.

My present invention pertains to train order deliverers, and it contemplates the provision of a device for the purpose set forth through the medium of which a train despatcher may with but a slight amount of effort deliver to the trainman such orders as may be desired, without the necessity of the engineer of the train reducing the speed of the train.

The invention further contemplates the provision of a train order deliverer7 that is simple and 'strong in construction, and one that is well adapted to withstand the ro-ugh usage to which similar devices are subjected.

The invention further contemplates the provision of a device for the purpose set forththat may be handled with safety not only by the trainman but also by the dispatcher.

Another object of the invention is the provision of'means whereby the hoop portion of the deliverer will be relieved of strain due to the impact of a passing trainman catching the said hoop portion.

The invention further contemplates the provision of a train order deliverer that is so constructed and arranged that the impact above referred to tends to more firmly retain the message under the message clip.

The invention in all of its'det-ails will be fully understood from the following description and claims when the same are read in connection with the drawings, accompanying and forming part of this specification, in which:

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the hoop and a'portion of the handle thereof.

Figure 2 is a'top plan view of a portion of the hoop and showing the message clip in full lines in the position ity assumes ready toreceive the message, and showing the normal position of the clip in dotted lines.

Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of the'hoop and clip together with the metal stamping.

Figure 4f is a sectional view of a portion of the hoop and handle and showing the arrangement `of the metal stamping with respect to theho'op and handle.

My novel deliverer, comprises the hoop portion l that by preference issquare-shaped in cross-section, and the said hoop portion is formed of green bendable wood, and in fact all portions of the device that are formed of wood are preferably of the saine green character in order to assure longer life to the device as a whole.

The said hoop portion terminates at one end in the square portion 9 and at its oppoy site end it is spliced and cut on a tapered swedge as indicated by 2. 'The fixedly secured handle portion 4 of the hoop is likewise provided with the spliced end that is formed in a tapered swedge portion 3 and the sai'd ends 2 and 3 are arranged one upon the other and enter a ferrule of metal or other suitable material as shown at 5. This ferrule preferably is square at one end and at its Vo oposite end is round in order to accommo ate itself to the round surface of the hoop handle portion 4l. The square portion of the ferrule is adapted to receive the square material formed by the ltapered swedge portions 2 and 3, and the said ferrule is secured on the hoop and handle thereof by means of rivets as shown in Figure 3, These rivets also tend to hold the swedge portions in proper positionv within the ferrule.

The 'metalstamping 6 is secured on the handle portion 4 and hoop portion l by means of lsmall nails or rivets, and the said stamping is provided with the ears 7 through which the nails orrivets pass; Maiiifestly the stamping is'pro'vided with the raised portion 8 that receives the end-portionof the hoop. The raised portion 8 is merely an eye and is so constructed that the loose end of the hoop rests onthe handle portion -i without binding and is adapted to lmove With respect to the h'andle portion 4- t'or an important purpos hereinafter set forth.

By reference particularly to YFigure it will be seen that the message clip is preterably formed of Wire as indicated by 10 and is provided at one end with the portion 11 that passes through the handle portion i and has a portion that bearsfagainst the under side of the handle, and at its opposite end the clip is provided with the up'stai'nlw ing portion 12 that passes through the loose end of the hoop near its end 9. It Will be seen by reference to Figure 2l that when it is desiredto place a message under the clip, the end 9 of the hoop is pulled slightly through the eye 8. The message is then inserted and because of the manner in which the clip is arranged on the handle portion 4 and the hoop portion 1, strain will be taken off of the hoop when the said hoop is caught by a passing trainman. Moreover the arrangement of ythe stamping 'on the hoop and the connection of the message clipy prevents the hoop end 9 from pulling out of the eye'v 8 of the clip when caught by the trainr'n'an.` This is due to the fact that the end 12 of the clip will abut against the eye 8 of the stamping as will beV apparent,

In order to permit a lady opera-tor or towerman to deliver a message to a passing tra'inman Without danger, I provide the automatic extension releasing hand-le 15 that is provided with the tapered srvedge end 111 that bears on the correspondingly shaped portion 13 of the hoop handle L1. A socket 16 provided Withv the lips 17 is secured to the underside of the handle 15 by means of the rivets 19 and the said rivets are also adapted to retain a iat spring clip 18 on the upper end of the handle 15. The said handle 15, in order to assure ready use of the extension handle at all times may be pro vided with a socket and spring clip at each of its ends, and if one is out of order the other will be ready for use.

In Figure 8 I have shown the message clip 20 that may be used in lieu of the clip 10. The said clip 2O straddles the underside ot one portion of the hoop and is secured to' the opposite end of the hoop at either side of the eye 8. This construction also assists in vrelieving the pressure and strain imposed on the hoop during operation of the device.

In theV practical use of the invention, the same may be usedeither with or Without the automatic extension handle. The message is placed under the clip andthe trainman passes his arm through the hoop portion and either removes the device from the dispatchers hand or from the extension handle as the case may be. -The arrangement of the message clip at all times is such 'as to preven-t injury to the clipwhen the trainman as are liable to become inoperative after a short period of use.

Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, 1s:

1. In a train orderdeliverer, the combination of a hoop formed of bendable matierial, a plate secured thereto and lh'avin'gan eye therein through which a portion oit the hoop passes; said eye being slightly larger than the diameter of the member, a message clip secured to the member and constructed and arranged to relieve stra-in applied to the hoop.

2. In a' device for the purpose set forth, the combination of a loop portion having a tapered end, a handle having a tapered end and adapted to bear on the end of the loop portion, a ferrule secured to the end portions and the handle portion, a message clipA secured to the handle portion and the loop portion, a member secured to the handle portion and loop portion, andhaving an eye through which the loose end of the loop portion passes and so constructed and arranged that a portion of the message clip abuts thereagainst at certain times to limit the movement of the loose end of the loop With respect to the eye, an extension handle having a tapered end a socket and a flat spring clip 'formed on the extension handle and adapted to bear thereon. x

3. In a device for the purpose set forth,

vthe combination of a loop portion, a handle portion secured thereto, and means arranged on the handle portion and loop portion for retaining said portions in proper position with respect to each other; said means comprising a member secured to they handle and loop portion and having an eye through which the loose end of the loop portion passes, and a message clip arranged on the loop portion and adapted to limit the movement of the loose end of' the loop portion with respect to the eye. t

4. In-a device for thepurpOSe set forth. the combination of a hoop Jformed ot bendable Wood or other suitable material, aV r# movable handle secured to the hoop, means for securing the handle and hoop to each other, a `plate for retaining the loose endet the hoop to the handle portion, and a niessage clip for preventing displacement of the hoop portion from the plate.

5. In means for the purpose specified, the combination of a handle, a tapered end formed on one end thereof, a hoop having a loose end and a tapered end adapted to bear on the tapered end of the handle, means for securing the said tapered ends to each other, a plate secured to the hoop and handle and having lips that engage said members and also having an eye through which the loose end of the hoop passes, a clip constructed and arranged to receive a message and also prevent undue strain being` placed on the hoop, and also adapted to limit movement of the loose end of the hoop with respect to the eye of the plate, an extension handle adapted to be removably secured to the hoop handle, and means for holding the said handles in proper position With respect to each other.
