Be it known that I, EDWIN HILL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Norwich, in thev county of New London and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new.y and useful Improvements in Billiard-Cue-Tip Chalkers, of which the following is a speciication.

This invention relates` yto holders for` chalk used in chalking the tips of cues used in playing billiards or poo It is customary for the player in games of pool and billiards to frequently applychalk to the. leathertip of his cue in order to prevent the same from slipping on the surface of. the ball and to do this a block of chalk with a hemispherical. depression therein is utilized the tip of the cue being placed within the depression and the block olf chalk rotated to apply the chalk to the prllhe object of this invention isto provide a holder for a block of chalk of this character which may be secured to any suitable support and is so constructed that the 'block may be rotated lfor chalking the cue. without dust from the chalk getting 'on the hands of the player or onto his clothing, and which prevents the player from putting the chalk in his pocket and carrying itofvf.

Another object .of the linvention is yto provide a device'of this character which has no springs or frangible parts liable to be broken and which will presentan attractive appearance when attached to a pool or' billiard table or to Aany other suitable support. Another object is to provide a holder of this character having ay chalk container rotatable within the supporting member and which may be readily removed from said member for applying additional blocks of chalk when necessary, a suitable key for holding the rotary member against vturning being provided when the container is to be removed.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of yconstruction as" hereinafter shown, de-y scribed and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 represents a perspective view of this improved chalk holder shown applied.

Fig. 2 is a vertical section therof, and Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the key used in connection with the device.

The cha-Iker constituting. this invention comprises a ybracket 1 4having an apertured attaching lange 2 at one end thereof and a cylindrical guide or casing 3 at its other end said guide extending laterally from said endandv projecting on opposite sides of said bracket as is shown clearly in Fig. 2 of the drawings. The casingV 3 has one end'chamiierediout on its inner face as shown at 4 witha shoulder 5 formed at the inner end of said chamfered portion. and which is designed for a purpose presently `,to be described. This casing or cylindrical guide 3 is adapted to be secured to any convenient supportby means of the bracket 1 and has mounted therein a tubular member 6 of a length greater than the casing 3 and adaptedrto berotatably mounted therein. This tube 6 is provided on its outer face near the closedend thereof with an annular bead 7 which forms a stop or abutment for one end ofthe casing 3 to limit the insertion of the tube within saidcasing as is shown yclearly in Figs, 1 and 2. rlihe open end of the tube 6 is threaded exteriorly as sliownat S for a purpose presently to be described. A chalk cup or `chamber 10 is formed at the open end'of the tube 6 by means of a transverse partition 11 spaced inwardly from said open end a distance corresponding. to the size of the ordinary chalk block B used in connection with devicesfof this character. An inwardly struck bead 12 forms a support for the partition 11 as is yshownclearly in Fig. 2.'

The outer end of the chalk cup or chamber 10 is closed by a capflike closure 13 the body portion or flange 14 of which is iny ternally threaded for engagement with the threadedy .portion 8 of thev tube 6. This cap-like closure 13 has a. central opening 15 which registers with the depression D in the chalk block B and is designed orthe insertion of thecue tips to be chalked. ThisV cap 13 is also provided in its outer face with a pair of diametrically opposite aperturesl which are designed to receive the tongues 18 of a key 17 which is designed to hold the cap 13 against turning when the tube 6 is to be unscrewed therefrom which` is necessary when the chalk block is to be renewed.

The edge of the flange 14 is designed to engage the shoulder 5 of the casing 3 and operates as a stop to prevent the withdrawal of the casing or tube 6 in one direction the bead 7 limiting its movement in the opposite eirection.

From the above description it will be obvious that the cap 13 is iirst inserted in the chamfered end oi the casing 3 and then the tube G having'the chalk block B mounted in the chamber 10 thereof is inserted in said casing 3 and rotated to connect it with the flanged portion or' the cap. When the parts are so arranged the device is ready for use and the tube 6 may be rotated within the casing 3 for chalking the cue tip in a manner which will be obvious.

Then it is desired to renew the chalk block the key 17 has the prongs 18 thereof inserted in the aperture 1G o1" the cap 13 and the asing G is rotated to unscrew it from said cap and permit its withdrawel from the casing' 3, and after a new block has been supplied it is reinserted in the manner above forthY lt will thus be seen that the chalk cannot be surreptitiously removed, since the one rei'noving it must have access to the key 1T vto hold the closure 13 while the tube is being unscrewed as otherwise the closure will turn with the tube.

From. the above description it will be obvious that this device is composed of comparatively few Darts and has no springs or other Vfragile parts liable to become broken and therefore will last indelinitely and will adequately protect the players hands and clothing against chalk dust.

The preferred embodiment ot the invention is disclosed in the drawings and set forth .in the speciiication, but it will be understood that any modifications within the scope of the claimed invention may be made in the construction without departing Yfrom the principle or the invention or sacrificing anv ot' its advantages.

l claim 1. fr billiard cue chalker comprising a cylindrial guide having a bracket for attachment to a support, a tube slidable and rotatable in said guide and provided at one end with a chalk chamber, a closure for said chamber rotatable in and held against longitudinal movement with respect to said guide, said closure and guide having cooperating inter-engaging means to prevent the withdrawal ot the tube in one direction.

L billiard cue chalker comprising a cylindrical guide having a bracket for attachment to a support, a tube slidable and rotatable in said guide and provided at one end with a chalk chamber, a closure for said chamber rotatable in said guide, said closure and guide having cooperating interengaging means to prevent the lengthwise movementY and withdrawal of the tube in one direction, and a bead on said tube to engage ythe other end o'l the guide to limit its withdrawal in the opposite direction.

A billiard cue chalker comprising a cylindrical guide having a bracket extend ing radially therefrom for attachment to a support, one end of said guide being chamiiercd out onv its inner tace to form a seat, a closure member for the end ot said guide iianged to tit and rotate in said seat, saidl closure being centrally apertured, a tube slidable and rotatable in said guide and provided at one end with a chalk chamber to be closed by said closure and cooperating means on said tube and guide Jior limiting the insertion of the tube and to prevent its withdrawal in one direction, the closure and said tube having threaded engagement and the closure operating to prevent the withdrawal ot' the tube in the opposite direction.

A billiard cue chalker comprising a cylindrical guide having an attaching bracket extending radially therefrom intermediate the ends thereor'7 one end of said guide being chamt'ered out on its .inner tace to Jr'orni a seat with a shoulder at its inner end, an annular flanged closure for said end with the flange rotatably mounted on said seat andl with its edge abutting said shoulder, said closure being centrally apertured, a tube slidable and rotatable in said guide and havinga horizontal partitiontherein to form a chalk chamber at one end said chamber carrying end being externally threaded and said closure flange being correspondingly threaded to engage said tube whereby the closure operates to close the end of said tube and also to prevent its withdrawal from the guide in one direction, and a bead on said tube near its other end and located in position toengage the other end ot the guide to prevent the withdrawal of the tube in ythe opposite direction.
