Be it known that I, RALPH E. THOMPSON, a citizen of the United States, residing a-t Brookline. in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented ce1'- tain new and useful Improvements in Pile `IVires. of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to pilewires such as are used in looms for weaving cut-pile fabrics and are provided with cutting blades which are detachable, so that when a blade becomes dull from use it can be replaced by a sharp blade. The object of the invention is to provide for the secure attachment of the blades to the wires without theuse of any additional parts for holding the blades in place. and to' this end I employ a blade which.` while normally fiat. is thinenough to be flexible transversely and I construct it and the tip portion of the wire in such manner that it is necessary to 'lex the blade in order tov locate it in operative position in the recess provided for its recept-ion. When this position is reached the blade resumes its original flat condition. and so long as it remains flat it cannot be displaced within the recess, or removed therefrom. Consequently it is necessary to .Hex the blade in order to disconnect it from the wire. this being prevented during use by the inherent elasticity of the blade.
My invention may be embodied in various forms. one of which is illustrated b v way of example in the accompanying drawings, in which.

Referring to the drawings, 2 indicates the free or front end portion of a pile wire which. except as hereinafter described,'may be of any usual or desirable construction, its tip 3 being enlarged vertically and bent laterally at its extremity as is customary. At the rear portion of the tip there is provided a recess for the reception of a detachable blade 4. which is normally at and is of such thinness that it can be readily exed transversely. The lower edge of the blade is adapted to seaton the bottom of The parts above described are so proportioned that when ready for use the front end of the blade lies directly behind the end wall 5 and its cutting edge 8 slants downward and rearward slightly above. the slanting rear edge of the tip, in position to sever the loops of varn surrounding the wire 2 when the latter is Withdrawn.
To insert the blade its rear end is introduced into the recess near the rear end of the latter, its front end being bent to one side of the tip in front of the aperture 7, and is then pushed downward and rearward until its front end is in position to spring into place behind the end wall 5. whereupon the blade resumes its normal flat condition. So long as it remains fiat it is'prevented from being removed from vor displaced within the recess by the side and end walls of the latter. of which the end walls 5 and 6 prevent the blade from moving upward or lengthwise. so that in order to remove the blade itis necessary to bend its front end laterally beyond one side of the end wall 5 and then draw it forwardly and upwardly out of the recess. and since the blade while in use is Vnot subjected to any strains tending to flex it laterally there is no danger of its accidental disconnection from the wire.
The construction above described has the advantages that the tip is'of uniform thickness throughout and its sides are smooth and free fromv projections of any sort, the
aperture 7 being located above the tops of Y the loops formed over the wire. so that the loops are necessarily severed before the yarn can reach any opening in which the iiights can catch. It will be evident.' however, that my invention may be embodied in wires having variously shaped blades and recesses adapted to utilize the iiexibility and elasticity of the blades for securing them in operative position.
I claim:
l. A pile wire having a recess adapted to receive a normally-flat exible blade and an open space at one end of the recess into receive a normally-flat iexible blade and a which one end of the blade may be flexed laterally; the end Walls of the recess being shaped to overhang the ends of the flat blade while seated on the bottom of the recess. y l
2. A pile wire having a recess adapted to transverse laperture communicating with one` end of the recess in position to receive 'the adjacent end of the blade when flexed laterally, the end Walls of the recess being shaped to overhang the ends of the flat blade While seated on the bottom of the recess.
