IMPROVEMENT IN MEDICAL COMPOUNDS FOR TREATING HORSES HOOFS, &c-
Specification forming part of Letters Pal out No. 145,047, dated Decr-mbcr 2, 1873; application filed July 11,1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J osnrn C. Bonnoocns, of Clinton, Lenawee county, Michigan, have invented a certain Composition of Matter or Improvement in Medical Compounds, being a new and useful ointment, and called Dr. Burroughs Hoof and Healing Ointment, of which the following is a specification:
This invention belongs to that class of medical compounds known as ointment and consists in a composition formed by the ingredients hereinafter specified, and in the manner and proportions set forth.
For making my ointment I use eight ingredients, as follows: Four ounces of lard; one ounce of sugar, C coffee, or best brown three-fourths ounce of beeswax one-halfounce resin two ounces of IllllttOIl-ttllOW four grains of Verdigris; one-half oinlce of rawlinseed-oil; one-half ounce of tin'pentine.
I first put the lard and sugar together, and heat over a fire until they come to a boil; 1 then strain off this compound, while hot, through factory-cloth; I then add the bees-wax and resin, and heat till all are well melted; then,
removing this from the fire, l innnediately add the tallow, and stir all well together; I next add the verdigris, and stir the same in thoroughly and when this compound is cooled to the temperature of blood-heat, I add the raw oil and turpentine, and stir until the whole be comes cool. The ointment is then ready for use.
The compound is designed especially as a hoof ointment for horses, although it is used with great success in healin galls, ulcers, and other sores, and is good for both man and beast.
