UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WALTER A. GOLDSMITH, F CLEVELAND, OHIO.
BLOOMERS.
Application filed April 20,
Tom whom it may concern Be it known that l, lVAL'iYiCR 1i. (ionosemi, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of'Cleveland, county of Cuyahoga, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in liiloon'iers, of wh ch the following is a specification, the principle of the invention being herein explained and the best mode in which I have contemplated applying that principle, so as to distinguish it from other inventions.
The present invention relates to bloomers for ladies, and more particularly. relates to the coi'ist-ruction of the same whereby the central seam through. the crotch is eliu1ihated. Other features are the use of a crotch reinforcement which gives added room and freedom of movement. By the use oi an extra reinforcing strip, a sanitary garment is also obtained. i To the accomplishnient oi the foregoing and related ends. said invention, then, consists of the means liereina'lter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The annexed drawing and the following description set forth in detail certain ture embodying the invention, such disclosed means constituting, however, but one of various structural forms in which the principle of the invention may be used.
In said annexed drawing 1 is a front elevational view of the bloomers; Fig. 2 is a rear elevational view oi the same; Fig. 3 is a plan view of the dia mend shaped crotch insert; Fig. t is a. tion on the line 44 of Fig. 1; Fig. 5 is a plan view of one of the leg portions; and Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view showing the elastic waist band.
The present bloomer as shown. comprises two leg portions 1, each preferably provided with a lower cuii 2 or the like. These leg portions are each formed from a single piece of cloth of roughly hexagonal shape, as shown in Fig. 5, the side 3 being the top of the bloomer and the side Al the bottom, while the side 5 is the front seam edge of the bloomer and this side is slightly concave so as to fit the bloomer to the form of the wearer. The side 6 forms the back seam oi: the garment, while the two sides 7 and which extend toward each other, are sewn together to form the bloomer leg.
As is clearly shown in Fig. 5 of the drawing, the rearward portion of the upper edge 3, of each of the two complementary gar- 1922. Serial No. 555,715.
nient sections, is at an obtuse angle to a median line, which supplies greater fullness at the rearward portion of the completed garment and at the same time permits the elastic waist band, hereinafter to be described, to eliminate fullness at the upper front area of the garment.
In the crotch of the bloomer is placed a diamond-shaped reinforcing member 9 which is attached between the two parts 1 with the long sides 10 extending up the back and with the short sides 11 entendi'ng up the front of the garmentbetween the two portions 1. The short sides 11 of the diamond shaped reinforcing member are slightly concave so as to fit the curved sides '5 of the front of the bloomer. Sewed into the garment with this crotch member 9 is a second member 15 of indentical shape but made of white or other undyed sanitary cloth.
As this crotch portion is the only part of the garment which can normally contact directly with the body of the wearer, the use of an extra reinforcing member which is not dyed, and preferably white, is of aid in making a sanitary garment.
By the use of the diamond crotch reinforcing 1nembe'rs,the objectionable center crotch seam is eliminated and in addition material is added in the crotch and up the back of the garment prodiicing the necessary fullness through the seat to allow perfect freedom of movement by the wearer, but allowing the garment to fit snugly around the waist and hips as the extra fullness is added in the crotch and extends well up the back but only a short distance up the front. Furthermore, the diamond-shaped pieces being double, reinforce the garment at the crotch so as to make a durable garment as well as a comfortable and sanitary one.
The waist band is provided. with an elastic strip 16 which is attached by a central seam 17, to the material while the elastic strip is stretched, there being two additional rows of stitching 18, 19, which enter the cloth only and not the elastic, thus dividing the fullness equally around the waist and holding the same permanently. The garment is of the closed bloomer type having no placket openings. The cuffs are also provided with elastic bands or strips in the usual way.
The bottom of the leg 20 is cut on a curve so that it is longest on the inside seam to ill) give an added seam length to give extra leg length through the crotch and seat and con sequent freedom of movement.
Other modes of applying the principle of my invention may be employed instead of the one explained, change being made as regards the structure herein disclosed, provided the means stated by any of the following claims or the equivalent of such stated means be employed.
1 therefore particularly point out and distinctly claim as my invention I 1. A closed bloomer-type garment com prising two complementary garment sections, each having an upper edge of which the rearward portion is at an obtuse angle to a median line, an elastic band under tension, provided at the upper edge of the garment to hold the same snugly over the hips of the wearer, a front seam held under tension by said elastic waist band and eliminating fullness at the upper front area of said garment, a crotch insert having a forward section extending upwardly providing fullness in front of the crotch, a widened central portion providing fullness through the crotch, and a rearward section extend ing upwardly providing fullness over the rear portion of the garment, and a greater length of material embodied in the fabricalong the inner leg portions to provide fullness along the inside leg section of the garment.
2. A closed bloomer-type garment formed of two portions of roughly hexagonal shape, each, portion having its two lower sides sewed together to form a garment leg, the two upper sides being sewed together at the front and back downwardly from the waist line, and a diamond shaped crotch insert, comprising two layers of fabric, said insert being sewed between the two portions with its obtuse angled ends at the points of the leg seams, and with its acute angled ends extending upwardly at the front and rear, the rear triangular portion of the crotch piece being longer than the front triangular portion, the crotch piece adding fullness through the crotch and seat.
3. A closed bloomer-type garment formed of two portions of roughly hexagonal shape, each portion having its two lower sides sewed together to form a garment leg, the two upper sides being sewed together at the front and back downwardly from the waist line, and a diamond shaped crotch insert, comprising two layers of fabric, the upper layer being of undyed sanitary cloth, said insert being sewed between the two portions with its obtuse angled ends at the points of the leg seams, and with its acute angled ends extending upwardly at the front and rear, the rear triangular portion of the crotch piece being longer than the front triangular portion, the crotch piece adding fullness through the crotch and seat.
4-. A closed bloomer-type garment formed of two portions of roughly hexa 'onal shape, each portion having its two lower sides sewed together to form a garment leg, the two upper sides being sewed together at the front and back downwardly from the waist line, the upper side of each front portion being slightly concaved to reduce fullness across the front of the garment, the lower side of each front portion being deeply concaved, and a diamond shaped crotch insert sewed between the two portions with its obtuse angled ends at the points of the leg seams. and with its acute angled ends extending upwardly front and rear, the rear triangular portion of the crotch insert being longer than the front triangular portion, the front triangular portion being cut with deeply concaved sides adapted to fit the similarly concaved lower ends of the front sides of the two main portions thus eliminating the central crotch seam and adding fullness through the crotch and seat of the garment and maintaining a form fitting front to the finished garment.
Signed by me, this 3rd day'of April, 1922.
