Application filed February 28, .1921. Serial No. 448,314..
Screens, of which the following is a full,
clear, and comprehensive specification and exposition, being such as will enable others to make and use the same. i
The object of my present invention, broadly speaking, is to provide an arrangement of the nature set forth which will be simple in character, effective in practice, automatic in operation, and which can be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low price.
More specifically stated my object is to provide a fly excluding and dispersing screen for windows, doors, or other openings, which will not only exclude flies from entering a room, but which will result in the room or building being cleared of flies in a very short time.
Other objects and particular advantages of the invention will suggest themselves in the course of the following specification, and that which is new will be correlated in the appended claim.
The preferred means for carrying out the principles of my invention in a practical and efiicient manner is shown in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is an outside or front elevation of a screen constructed in accordance with my invention. Figure 2 is an inside view of the upper portion of the same. And Figure 3 is a vertical central cross section of the upper portion of Figs. 1 and 2.
Similar indices denote like parts throughout the several views.
In order that the construction, the operation, and the advantages of the invention may be more fully understood and appreciated, I will now take up a detailed description thereof, in which I will set forth the several features as fully and clearly as I may.
In the drawings numerals 1 and 2 denote the two vertical side rails of the frame, and numerals 3 and 4 denote the horizontal top and bottom rails respectively of the screen frame. The said rails 1, 2, 8- and 4 are secured together in any well known manner,
and the said frame is to be secured in a window, door, or other outside opening of a room or building.
A wire" screen 5 extends between all of the members of said frame, being securedat each edge thereto, the edges bein by the respective strips of moul ing 6, 7,
8 and 9.
At intervals along the lower edge of the rail 3, and the moulding 9, the screen 5 is cut horizontally, and at the ends of said cuts a short downward cut is made, whereby the material forming the raw edges 5 may be turned outward and downward, as shown in Fig. 3, and thereby forming a plurality of slots, as the slots 10, 11 and 12 shown in Fig. 1. i
Secured on the inside of the frame is the blind A which is impervious to light, the same being contacted with and secured to the inner faces of the rails 1, 2 and 3, and it extends down below the slots 10, 11 and 12, thereby forming a pocket- B, as in Fig. 3, which is between the lower edge of the rail 3, the screen 5, and the blind A.
In'practice it is evident that flies will not enter from the outside through the slots 10,
11 and 12 for instance, on account of thecomparative darkness in the pocket B, the blind A shutting off the light, and also flies would enter such slots only by crawling upward thereto, and it is evident that the edges 5 will effectually prevent the flies from crawling upward into the slots.
However the flies which may be on the inside of the room will naturally light upon the screen 5, on account of the light outside and they will travel up the screen and will be led out through the said slots 10, 11
and 12, as they will all the time be headed toward the light.
I have found in practice that a screen in which my invention is .incorporated when placed in an outside window of a room will soon effectually clear the interior of the house of flies, and will therefore accomplish the objects for which it is intended.
I desire that it be understood that various changes may be made in the several details of construction and in the arrangement of the several parts without departing from the spirit of my invention and without sacrificing any of the advantages thereof which are new and useful.
Having now fully shown and described covered 1 my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
A fly eliminating screen comprising in combination, a frame, a wirescreen extending between all of the members of the frame and secured to the outer face thereof,-tlie screen being cut. horizontally at intervals along its upper portion and at the ends of each of said cuts the screen material being out down vertically a short distance whereby the material between each part of the vertical cuts may be turned outward and downward thereby forming a plurality of slots, a blind which is impervious to light rigidly secured on the inside face of the frame and extending from the upper rail of the frame downward to a point below said slots thereby forming a pocket between the blind and the upper portion of the screen, all substantially as shown and described and for the purposes set forth.
, In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JAMES E. JONES.
