EDWARD DEWALD, $3., OF CINCINNATI, OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO EDWARD DEWALD, JR., OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
SWIVEL-PLUG CONNECTOR.
Application filed March 8, 1920. Serial No. 364,315.
T 0 all whom it may 0011 cer'n Be it known that I, EDWARD DEWALD, Sn, a citizen of the United -Sta.tes,-residing in Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in a Swivel-Plug Connector, of which the following is a specification.
An object of my invention is to produce a swivel plug connector of the general type disclosed in my Patent Number 1,316,561.
and in my copending application serially numbered 347,365, in which much greater compactness of construction is attained than in either of the previous constructions and in which greatly increased ease and efiiciency of operation is also attained.
This and other objects are attained in the swivel plug described in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Fig. 1 is an elevational section of my improved connector, upon an enlarged scale.
Fig. 2 is a transverse section upon the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a view of a vdetail of my invention.
44 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a view of a detail of my invention. v
Fig. 6 is an elevational section of my improved connector, upon an enlarged scale, but showing a somewhat modified form thereof.
Fig. 7 is a transverse section upon the line 7-7 of Fig. 6.
Fig. 8 is a transverse section upon the line 88 of Fig. 6. I
Fig. 9 is a transverse section upon the line 99 of Fig. 6.
In my improved construction a body 9 encloses the principal elements of the connector, a cap 10 being provided at one end of the body for carrying a screw. ferrule 11 of metal adapted to enter the usu'al s crew s0-..-ket of electrical fittings. At .the opposite end of the body a cap 12,is,f'1 'o-v-ided forholding the electric cable 13 lea'in' from -'the connector, a clamping nut '-1 'f4.-"be1ng screwed upon a split extensionilfi of cap'=12 for clamping cable 13 tightlyf; .B'ddyff). and caps 10 and 12 are of i'nsiilatingmaterial and extending through the body-is a spindle 16 also of insulating material. The lower end 17' of spindle '16-is enlarged and screw threaded Fig. 4 is a transverse section upon the line for carrying cap 12 and a lock nut 18 which is also of insulating material.
Upon spindle 16 are two metal collars 20 and 2 1 which are separated by an insulating washer 22 and the collars are provided with the respective outwardly extending annular flanges 23 and 24. Against the under faces of these collars the respective sets of metal balls 25 and 26 bear, the former being located in a metal race 27 and the latter being located in a metal race 28, race 27 bearing upon a shoulder 9 of the body 9 and having beneath it a metal washer 29 which is held to collar 20 by a screw 30 which also passes into spindle 16, and race 28 bearing upon a metal washer 31 which is held to collar 21 by a screw 32 which also passes into spindle 16. Beneath collar 20 and washer 29 an insulating washer 19 is located. WVasher 19 has two having a lug 47, see Fig. 3, which bears against elements 43.
In Figs. 6 to 9 inclusive the connector shown in Figs. 1 to 5 inclusive has been adapted to connecting two cables instead of a screw socket and .a cable. The cap 10 and screw ferrule 11 have been removed from the construction as shown in Fig. 1 and in lieu thereof a disc 48 and cap 49, both of insulating material, have been substituted and these elements are preferably held in place by screws 50. A split screw threaded extension 51 of cap 49 is provided with a clampinglnut 52 which performs the same function as nut 14 of the lower end of the connector in clamping cable 53 tightly. Molded or otherwise located in disc 48 are nuts 54 which receive screws 55 which pass through the bent over ends 56 of the strips 33 and 36 and around which wires 57 and 58 of the cable 53 are placed. The remaining parts of the connector are the same below the disc 48 as in the previously described screw plug type and bear the same refer ence numerals, hence repeated description of this portion of the construction is thought unnecessary.
It is thought that the operation of the connector is sufiiciently self evident from the construction which has been described, as to need no further explanation, the draw ings clearly showing the operation.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is 2-- In a swivel plug connector, a body, a spindle within the body, a ball race within the body for the positive pole and a ball race within the body for the negative pole ofa source of current supply, each of said races having a ball contacting surface to support the bottom surfaces of balls located therein, a ball race on the spindle for each ball race in the body. each of said races having a surface to contact the top surfaces of balls located therein, balls within the races establishin; electrical connection between the races for the positive and between the races for the negative poles of current supply, electrical conductors attached to and extending from the body ball races through the body to one end thereof, electrical conductors attached to and extending from the spindle ball races through the spindle to one end thereof away from the body con ductors. and means at the body end and atthe spindle end of the connector adapted to connect wires thereto.
In witness whereof, I alfix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
