OAR-DOOR-OPERATING MECHANISM.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CLYDE C. Famrnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Edgewood, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Car-Door- Operating Mechanisms, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to door operating devices, and more particularly to a device for controlling the operation of car doors, such as are employed on cars in traction service.
Where cars are provided with doors on opposite sides, such as on double end cars, it is necessary to operate only the door or doors on one side when the car is running in one direction and only the door or doors on the opposite side, when the car is running in the opposite direction.
In such cases, it is usual to provide a separate door operating motor or engine for the door or doors on each side of the car.
The principal object of my invention is to provide means whereby different doors can be separately operated by the operation of'a' single door engine, thus reducing the cost of the equipment and simplifying the same.
In the accompanying drawings; Fig. 1 is a plan View of a construction embodying my invention; Fig. 2 a central vertical section thereof; Fig. 3 a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2; Fig. 1 a front elevation of the construction; and Fig. 5 a section on the line 55 of Fig. 2.
According to my invention, a clutch mechanism is provided, which is adapted to be manually operated at will, so as to opera tively connect a single door engine to either one of two door operating mechanisms, which in turn are adapted to operate the doors on opposite sides of the car.
As shown in the drawings, the construc tion may comprise a main casting l at the upper and lower portions of which are secured journal members 2 for a door operating shaft 3, the members 2 being secured to the casting 1 by bolts 4.

sides of the portion 5, arms 7 and 8 are rotatably mounted on the shaft 3 and pivotally connected to said arms are rods 9 and 10 for respectively operating the doors on opposite sides of the car.
Secured to the. arms 7 and 8 are taper pins 11 and 12 adapted to engage in corresponding holes in the member 6, so that when the member 6 is moved to a position in which one of the pins will engage in the corresponding hole in the member 6, the corresponding arm will be operatively connected to the shaft 3.
The shaft 3 is adapted to be operated by means of a door engine of suitable construction (not shown) which is operatively connected to said shaft through a rod 13 and and an arm 14, secured to said shaft.
In order to shift the clutch member 6, a vertically slidable crosshead 15 is provided, having forked arms 16 adapted to engage in an annular groove 17, formed in the member 6.
The crosshead 15 is provided with a lug 18 adapted to engage in a recess 19, cut in the hub of arm 7 and a lug 20 adapted to engage in a recess 21, formed in the hub of the arm 8.
The crosshead 15 is adapted to be operated by means of a rotatable shaft 22, having mounted on the end face thereof an eccentrically disposed pin 23, which is adapted to engage in a hole formed in a lug 24 of the crosshead.
On one end of the shaft 22 is secured a member 25 having oppositely disposed fingers 26 and 27, adapted to be operated by a treadle pin 28 for partially rotating the shaft.
The member 25 is provided with notches 29 for the reception of a latch pin 30 which is subject to the pressure of a spring 31, so that the pin is adapted to yieldingly e11- gage said notches.
In operation, when it is desired to connect up one door or set of doors for opera tion by the single door engine, the treadle pin 28 is inserted in one of two holes which extend through the car platform, as shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings, and is pressed down by the foot.

If the other door or set of doors are to be operated, the pin 28 is inserted in the other hole through the car platform, and is de pressed by the foot so as to operate the finger 27 and partially rotate the shaft 22 in the opposite direction.
This movement of the shaft will cause the downward vertical movement of the crosshead 15, so that pin 12 engages in the corresponding hole in the member 6, thereby locking the arm 8 to the shaft 3. At the same time, the lug 20 moves out of engagement with the'recess 21, while the lug 18 moves into the recess 19, so as to lock the arm 7 against rotation.
It will thus be seen, that by simple manipulation of the treadle pin 28, either one locked against movement.
