To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL WIRTH, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pumps, of Which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to pumps and more particularly to the type in which a cylinder is secured in a socket of a base member and has a. piston operating therein, an object of this invention being to prov de a means which will act as a combined cylinder and piston spreader holding the cylinder to the base member within an annular groove in the pocket and cooperating with the piston when the latter is in its lnnermost position to spread such piston in order to maintain firm contact between the piston and the inner Wall of the cylinder. To this and other ends, the invention consists of certain parts and combinations of parts all of which will be hereinafter described, the novel features being pointed out in the appended claims.

Fig. 4 is a detail view of the lower end of the pump cylinder before it is connected with the base.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 indicates the cylinder and 2 the base, the cylinder being formed of sheet tubing and the base preferably being in the form of a casting with a pocket receiving the lower'end of the cylinder, said pocket having an annular groove 3 near its bottom- Within the pocket is arranged a spreader 4, in this instance in the form of a. ring having a flaring lower portion 5 with which the tubing or cylinder 1, when the cylinder or tubing is forced into the pocket, is adapted to cooperate to deflect the lower end of the tubing or cylinder as at 6 into the annular groove 3, thus causing the cylinder or tubing to interlock with the base member 2. The spreader 4 also acts for spreading the piston into engagement with the cylinder walls when the piston is in its lowermost position, and to this end the ring or member 4 has an upper portion 7 which projects into the lower end of the tubing or cylinder 1 in spaced relation to the inner wall of said tubing or cylinder to provide an annular space 8. The piston, in this instance, embodies a leather cup 9 and a plate 10, both secured to a piston rod 11 which is guided through the head 12 of the cylinder 1 and has a handle 13 at its upper end. The cup and the disk 10 are-held to the rod 11 by two nuts 14 and 15, the lower one of which is adapted to be received in the central opening 16 of the ring or spreader 4 when the piston is in its lowermost position. At this time the flange of the cup 9 will be received within the annular space 8 and will be forced outwardly against the inner wall of the cylinder.
Air passes around the cupped piston from above the latter to the under side of the piston where it is compressed and is forced through the passageway 17, which extends from the central portion of the ring 4, under said ring and the lower end of the cylinder and upwardly through the top of the base 2.
From the foregoing it will be seen that there has been provided a combined cylinder and piston spreader arranged in a pocket in a base member and acting to spread the lower end of the cylinder into an annular groove in the pocket and to cooperate with the piston for the purpose of spreading the cup portion of the latter into engagement with the internal wall of the cylinder so as to maintain the proper shape of the piston.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A pump comprising a base having a pocket formed with an annular groove, a combined cylinder and piston spreader arranged in said pocket, a cylinder fitting in said pocket and having its lower edge held in the annular groove by the spreader, and a piston operating in the cylinder and spread by said spreader when in its lowermost position.
2. A pump comprising a base having a pocket formed with an annular groove, a cylinder fitted in said pocket and having its lower end projecting into the annular groove, a piston operating in the cylinder and having a cup portion, and a spreading device arranged in'the pocket and having a lower portion for cooperating with the lower portion of the cylinder to hold the latter in the groove, and an upper portion for spreading the cup of the piston when the latter is in lowermost position.
3. A pump comprising a base, a cylinder,
a pistonoperating in the cylinder, and a device securing said cylinder to the base and] v 10 groove, a cylinder fitting in said pocket and having its lower edge entending into said annular groove, an, nverted cup member havinga lower portion holding the lower edge of the cylinder in theannular grooveand an upperportionspa'ce'd from the interior. Walls of the cylinder, and a cup piston operating in the cylinder and arranged to cooperate with the upper portion of the cup member to spread said cup piston'outwardly.
