SAMUEL W. TAYLOR, OF iBALTIh IOPJE, MARYLAND, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JOHN IE. MAYER, OF BALTIIMQR'E, MARYLAND.
ROTATABLE CONTAINER MACHINE,
Application filed August 9, 1921.. Serial No. 491,050.
To all whom-it mag concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL WV. TAYLOR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore city, in the State of Maryland, have invented a new and useful Rotatable Container Machine, of which the following is a specification.
Myinvention relates to improvements in rotatable container machines and has for its object the providing of means for rotating a container continuously in one direction at varying speeds.
A further object of my invention is the providing in a rotatable container machine, automatic means for varying the speed of rotation while revolving in one direction.
A further object of my invention is the providingof an improved means for mounting the container in a rotatable container machine and connecting the-same with the power mechanism.
A further object of my invention is the providing of improved means of periodic variation of velocity of the container from a source of power of uniform velocity.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, my invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, but it is understood that changes, variations and modifi-v cations can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
My invention is especially adapted to washing machines, concrete mixers or other rotating containers where it is desired to change the velocity of the container with reference to its contents.
In a washing machine, a continual current of water through the clothes is desirable. This is accomplished in my improved container machine by causing the clothes to rotate with approximately the same velocity as the container, while the water tends to resist a variation in velocity of the clothes so rotated.
The above is accomplished by periodically increasing and decreasing the spec-.1 of rotation. This is done twice every revolution in the mechanism shown in the drawings, viz, by the intervention of elliptical gears between the source of power and the container. If a heart gear and its conjugate gear were used, the change ofthe rate of velocity would occur once every revolution. 1 do not limit myself, however, to any periodic time or rate of change. I I
in the drawings of the herein described embodiment of my invention, Figure 1 is a sectional View in elevation of my improved rotatable containing machine as applied to the washing of clothes in a fixed tub Ofthe ordinary type; Fig. 2 is a view taken through AB. of Fig. 1 looking towards the container hanger at the opposite end of the drum from the drive. is a view taken through CD of'Fig. 1, just outside of the container looking in the opposite direction from the view shown in Fig. Fig. i is a plan view of the tub and container shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 5 isan enlarged view of the conjugate tongue and groove container support on the power end of the container.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts I angular or other convenient design.
3 are internal conical projections in the container tending to carry the clothes at .the velocity of the container through the lowerpart of its revolution and drop the same on "its upper part of revolution.
The container is provided with a door not shown. 4. is the journal secured to container 2 and operates in hanger bearing 5. This bearing supports one end of the container. The other end of the container is supported by conjugate tongue and groove 6 and 7, one part of which is secured to thecontainer and supports the same, the other part is carried by groove 7 of the driving mechanism.
This tongue and groove is so designed and may be made of any shape suitable to lock in all directionsv when the container is in position, but is susceptible of disengagement when the container is at an angle to its normal position of operation. It is preferable to be circular as shown in the drawings, so that the container may be removed atany semi-revolution thereof.
8 and 9 are conjugate driving elements, one of which is mounted on the power shaft- 10 revolving at substantially constant speed. These driving elements may be gears of any desirable peripheral shape. In the drawings elliptical gears are shown, this gives a maximum and minimum speed to the driven shaft at each half revolution. The other element is secured to driven shaft 11 to which is secured the tongue and groove element above mentioned. Driven shaft 11 operates in bearing 12.
The operation of my invention is as follows Clothes to be washed are placed in container 2, and when in contact with projections 3 tend to move with the same velocity as the container. Fluids in the container tend to resist any increase or decrease in the speed of the container, and in doing so flow through and by the clothes and pins operating with the container. This causes periodic violent change of current through the substances operated upon in the container.
The container operating in one direction at all times, even with its variation of velocity causes less jar and noise than by complete reversals, and at tne same time makes possible a very simple mechanism.
To remove the container when groove 7 is in the vertical position or parallel with the slot in hanger bearing 5, the end of the container supported by journal 4 is lifted out of hanger bearing 5, thereby enabling the container to move endwise sufiiciently for tongue 6 to be withdrawn from groove 7.
Power shaft 10 is driven at a constant velocity by any well known means.
Having thus described my invent-ion, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. A rotatable container machine comprising a container, a fixed support at one end thereof in which a journal oi said container may operate, a journal operating in said fixed support, a revolving support at the other end consisting of conjugate tongue and groove members one of which is in a revolving member and is supported thereby, a revolving member driving said revolving support, and means for disengaging said member consisting of means for the release of the other end of said container so that the said end may be moved in a plane parallel to said curved tongue which is curved for the purpose.
2. In arotatable container machine, a container, means for rotating the same continuously in one direction at varying speed consisting of conjugate gearing of varying pitch line with reference to their centers transmitting the driving energy to said cont ainer from a source of power of relatively uniform velocity.
