Be it known that I, ALFRED M. SGHLAGEL,
a citizen ofthe United States, residing in the county of Montgomery, near the city of Dayton, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and usefullmprovements in Tractors, of which the following is a specification.
The principal object of my invention is to provide simple and justing the cutting tractor.
It is a further object of my invention to provide simple and efiicient means for main- 1 5 taining the plows parallel with the surface of the ground when, after the first out has been made, the right wheels of the tractor travel in the furrow created.
Other important and incidental objects will be brought out in the following specification and particularly set forth in the subjoined claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevational view of the rear end of the tractor, showing my improved depthsetting and leveling means for the plows.
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the same.
Figure 3 is a cross sectional view taken on the line AA of Figure 2, showing the 80 cross draw bar. And Figure 4: is a cross sec tional view taken on the line 13-13 of Figure 2, showing the plow leveling mechanism.
Throughout the specification and drawings, similar reference characters denote corresponding parts.
In a detailed description of the preferred form of embodiment of my invention, the numeral 1 designates the rear axle of a tractor, upon which are mounted traction wheels 2, 2. Mounted upon the middle portion of the axle 1 is a transmission housing 3 to the rear portion of which is bolted a plate 4. (See Figures 1, 2 and 3.)
Provided in the plate 4 are two arcuate slots 5, 5 that receive bolts 6, 6 respectively by which a leveling head 7 is secured to said plate. (See Figure 4.) Bolted to each side of the leveling head 7 is the flange portion 8 of a channel member 9. Vertically slidable in the channel members 9, 9 is a drawbar supporting member 10 having in its lower end a square hole 11 through which a draw bar 12 projects. The front end of this draw bar 12 projects through a hole in the lower end of a bracket 13 that depends depth of the plows of a efiicient means for ad-- from the transmission housing 3. (See Fig ure 1.) Provided on the draw bar 12 between the supporting member 10 and the bracket 13,is a shoulder let between which and the bracket 13 a coil spring 15 surrounds the draw bar. Another coil spring 16 surrounds the draw bar 12 between the bracket 13 and a washer 17 that bears against a nut 18 on theinner threaded end of said draw bar. (See Figures 1 and 2.) V
Vertically movable through a hole in the horizontal end portion 19 of the leveling head 7, is a tube 20 on whose lower end is weldeda bracket 21 to which are bolted two blocks 22, 22 through lateral holes in which the ends of a cross draw bar 23 project (See Figures 1 and 3.) Provided in the middle portion of the cross draw bar 23 is a hole 24 through which the rear end of the draw bar 12 passes, the latter terminating in an enlarged end 25 containing holes 26 to receive the attachingmeansgf other implements when the plow mec hanism now to be described is removed. (See Figure 2.)
Secured to the ends of the cross draw bar 23, are the claw-shaped ends 27 of a. U-frame 28. Hingedly secured by a pin 29 to the top portion of each claw shaped end 27 of the U-frame, is a strap 30 which is pressed over the upper part of the cross draw bar end and thereafter secured to the clawshaped end of the frame by a pin 31. In this manner the inner ends of the u-frame are firmly, yet removably, secured to the ends of the cross draw bar 23. ('See Figures 1, 2 and Pivotally secured to trunnions 32, 32 attachedto the sides of the U-frame 28, are two plow- beam receiver arms 33, 33 respectively, each of which, at its front end, has an inwardly projecting portion 34:. Secured between these inwardly projecting portions 34:, 34 of the arms 33, 33 respectively, is a break-pin bracket 35. (See Figure 2.)
Telescoping into the rear ends of the arms 33, 33 are two plow beams 36, 36 res ectively, on the rear end of each of whic is bolted a plow bottom 37.v Connected between the plow beams 36, 36 is a cross beam 38, to which there is riveted a plow beam 39 that has secured to its rear end a plow bottom 40. A beam 4:1 is connected between the plow beam 39 and each plow beam 36 to beam 38 is a forwardly projecting tongue 42 that enters the forked portion 43 of the break-pin bracket 35 and is secured thereto by a wooden pin 44 which will break to release the plows when the latter encounter a formidable obstruction in the field.
For the purpose of adjusting the depth of the plows, the following means are provided. Pivotally secured between two rearwardly projecting bracket arms 45, -15 attached to the rear cross portion of the U- frame 28, is trunnion nut 46 that receives a threaded spindle 47 to the upper end of which is secured a crank 48. Provided on the lower end of the spindle 47 is a pair of collars 49, 49 between which a trunnion block 50 surrounds said spindle. Secured to the trunnion block 50 is a bracket 51 to which is welded a vertical plate 52 that is attached at its upper end to the break-pin bracket 35. It is thus possible, by turning the crank 48, to adjust the depth of the plows below the surface of the ground. The method thus provided for depth adjustment of the plows is an eas one as well as a minute one.
After the first cut is made by the plows, the right wheels of the tractor will travel in the furrow made, thereby causing it to assume an inclined position with reference to the horizontal plane of the ground. To compensate for this inclined position of the tractor, the slots 5, 5 have been provided in the plate 4 to permit the tractor to inc-line while the plows remain in a plane that is parallel to the surface of the ground. When the tractor starts to move down on bar,
one side, the bolts 6, 6 which pass through the slots 5, 5 in the plate 4, will remain stationary to keep the plows level when the plate follows the sidewise descent of the tractor to whose transmission housing it is connected.
The tube 20 passing through the rear end of the leveling head 7, acts as a pivot in a horizontal plane to permit a circular movement of the plows in that plane when the tractor is making a turn.
I do not wish to be limited to the details of construction and arrangement herein shown and described, and any changes or modifications may be made therein within the scope of the subjoined claim.
Having described my invention, I claim:
In a device of the type described, the combination with a main frame, of a plowing device, a plate vertically secured to said main frame, containing arcuate slots, a draw bar rotatably secured at its front end to said frame, a support for the rear end of saiddraw connecting elements projecting forwardly from said support through the arcuate slots in the vertical plate, a vertical tube rotatably secured in said support, a cross bar carried by the lower end of said tube, through which the rear end of said draw bar projects, and means for connecting the plow ins: device to said cross bar.
