BTEADY BEST FOR GRINDING MACHINES.
Application filed August 30, 1920. Serial No. 406,916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR H. F one, a citizen of the United States, residin at Detroit, in the county of \Vayne and i ltate of Michigan, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Steady Rests for Grinding Machines, of which the following is a specification.
. My invention relates to an improved form of steady rest for grinding machines, by
which the work being ground may be positively and accurately supported intermediate its ends and furthermore my device is constructed so that all adjustments required to correctly place and secure the parts of the steady rest in exact position may be positively and conveniently accomplished.
My invention will best be understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, showing a preferred embodiment thereof, in which:
Fig. 1 shows the steady rest inside elevation and partially in section in the position it assumes when in use on a grinding machine; and
Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the parts shown in Fig. 1 as seen from the right hand I of said figure.
Fig.3 is a sectional view of part of the construction shown in Fig. 2 taken along the line 3-3.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
As shown in the drawings myimproved steady rest consists of a housing 10 through which a bolt 11 extends, said bolt havingat its far enda square head which when the steady rest is in use is in a T-shapedslot 13 shown in Fig. 2, longitudinally and horizonbevel 0n the outer surface of a wedge 18 also fitting slot 15 for vertical motion therein. The rear face of the wedge 18 rests against the fiat surface of the portion 1 1 of the grinding machine. Screws 19 and 20 extend through the upper portion of the housing 10 into the upper end of the slot 15 and at tally of a supporting part 14 of the grinding machine convenient to the work 82 betheir lower ends are threaded respectively into the upper ends of the support 16 and the wedge 18. The support 16 and the wedge 18 have formed through them slots 21 and 22 to receive a bolt 23 similar to the bolt 11 and having a square head 12 similarly engaging the slot 13. The lower end of the support 16 is preferably curved as indicated and carries on its inner surface a bushing 2 1 accurately finished on its inner surface to engage the work 32 being ground,-v said bushing being held in place on the support by havingformed therein on its outer surface a shallow. groove 25 equal in width to thewidth ofthe support 16 said parts being further held in said engagement by a pin. 26 and a retaining plate 27.
The housing 10 is further held in proper position on the part 14 by a key 28, secured to said housing by av screw 29 so that by the engagement of said key with the narrower. part of the slot 13as more clearly shown in Fig. 3, the housing is retained in proper position when the bolt 23 is loosened to adjust the support 16 and the bushing carried thereby to proper position. In using the steady rest, the housing 10 is first secured to the part 1 1 at a position on the work 32 such that the bushing when adjusted will engage a part of the work 32 that is not to be ground for this particular adjustment of the steady rest. At this time,
the bolt 23 is released from clamping position and the housing 10 is held in place by the bolt 11 and the key 28. The support 16 is then moved vertically until the. bottom part of the bushing 241 engages the surface of the work 32 and then the wedge 18 is moved vertically until the upper part of the bushing 24. is in properengagement with the work 82, after which the support and wedge: are securely clamped to the part 14 of the grinding machine by tighteninghthe bolt 23. It will be observed that the support 16 affords a means for adjusting the bushing 24. vertically and that the wedge 1.8 atfords a means. for adjusting the bushing horizontally and. that a suitable clearance 30 is provided in the upper portion of the housing 10 to permit horizontal movement of the screw 19 in the housing as required by the adjustment of the wedge 18 so that when the bolt 23 is tightened the bevel faces of the support 16 and the wedge 18 and the rear I face of the wedge 18 and the corresponding face of the part 14 are held. positively together throughout the entire extent of the said surfaces of the support 16 and the wedge 18. F or this condition the bolt 23 5 also serves to prevent displacement of the housing on the part 14 of the grinding machine, as a result of the fit of the support 16 and the wedge 18 in theslot and the further fact that" the screws 19 and 20 are lov -preferably made close fits in the support ,16 and wedge 18 and provided with flanges for preventing longitudinal motion of said screws in the housing 10. As a result of the construction described it will be observed 15that the thrusts exerted upon the work 32 *bythe-grinding wheel 31 moving in the direction indicated, are directed substantially towards the mid portion of? the bushing 24; "andthat therefore the work is positively 20"supported-so that it will not spring away,
l fromthe wheel 31 as a result oi the grind- 'ing operation and thus cause the worlr to *chatter. The steady rest may obviously be :moved to any position longitudinally of the grinding machine that may be required and various bushings 2 may be used with the "same support 16 if necessary to fit parts of the work 32 of different diameter.
. lVhile I have shown my invention in the particular embodiment above described I do not'however, limit myself to this exact construction, as I may employ modifications thereof'known to the art at the time of the filing of this application without departing 35 7 from the scope of the appended claims.
