Description

Patented Mar. 27, 1923.
UNITED STATES SAMUEL orno HOLLAND, or SALISBURY, Non'rn" CAROLINA, AssreNonoF ONE-HALF T0 BAsoUM L. UMBERGER, or CONCORD, NORTH CAROLINA.
, oorLArsIBLE-miu TOOL.
Application filed october 11, 1921."
the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to a tool for expanding collapsible or other demountable rims, and one of the objects thereof is to provide a tool of this character which is of the most simple construction possible, and which is inexpensive to manufacture.
Another object of my invention resides in the provision of a tool of this character which forms no part of the rim and is entirely independent thereof.
Another advanta e of my invention is that it may be app ied to the rim instantly and without the necessity of making any ad 'ustments.
till another object of my invention is to provide a tool of this character which is foldable in such manner that it occupies a minimum space.
Other objects and advantages of my invention will appear as the description proceeds.
I will now proceed to describe one particular form of my invention, it being understood that those skilled in the art may make many changes and modifications therein without departing from the spirit of my invention as defined in the appended claims; and the drawings forming part of this application are therefore to be considered merely as illustrative and not in any limiting sense.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective View with the tool applied thereto.
Figure 2 is a side view of the tool and rim, the latter being in section, and showof a rim the position of the parts when the rim is expanded.
Figure 3 is a plan View of the plied to the rim, and
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the tool in its folded position.
Referring to the drawings more in detail, numeral 1 indicates a rim, which in the present instance is of'the collapsible type, though it will be understood that my tool ap- North Carolina, have.
Serial No. 507,013.
invention is equally well adapted to use i i with any other type of demountable rim.
he tool comprises the two links 2 and 3, hingedly connected as indicated by numeral 4; and a latching device 5 hingedly connected to the link 3 as indicated by numeral 6 i run, and are located adjacent the ends thereof. The link 2 is provided with a notch 9 for engaging one of the lugs, and the link 3 has the latch Assuming the rim to be in the position shown in Figure 1 then it is only necessary to place the notch 9 and keyhole slot 10 in engagement with the lugs provided on the rim, and when this has been done, the links 2 and 3 form a toggle, as clearly shown in Figure 1. It will be apparent that it is only necessary to step on the toggle, thereby causing the ends of the links to expand the rim to its normal locking position.
Attention is here called to the fact that the hinge 4 between links 2 and 3 is on the under side of the toggle, so that as the rim expands and approaches its normal position, this hinge strikes the upper end of the rim and causes it to snap into position.
After the rim. has been expanded the tool is removed from the rim and folded in the manner shown in Figure 4, so that a minimum space is occupied by the tool when it is not in use.
From the above description it will be clear that the collapsible rim tool which I have invented is of the most simple construction possible, and is also inexpensive in manufacture; that the tool forms no part of the rim itself, and is entirely independent therefrom, and that the tool is adapted to use in connection with any type Suitable lugs 7 and 8 are provided onthe of demountable rim, it being only necessary to provide on the rim some gaging the ends of the links; that the tool may be applied to or removed from the rim instantly, and without the necessity of making any adj ustme ts and that when not in use the tool may be folded on itself so that it occupies a minimum space.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure byLetters Patent is:
1. A toggle device for expanding detachable split rims, comprising two fiat plates each adapted at one end to engage and thrust the rim, said plates being connected by a hinged joint affordinga suflicient projection on one side of the devicetoforce means for en-e the meeting endsof the rim out into line when the toggle is flattened. r
2. A toggle device for expanding detachable. split rims, includingtwo flat ,plates fol'dable' upon each other, and a third flat plate foldable upon one 'ofthe first-mentioned plates, said third plate having an aperture affording means for engaging a portion of a:rim.
3. A collapsible rim tool comprising three sections hingedly connected, two of the sections beinglinks for forming a toggle, and the third section being a latching device, said latching device a key-hole slot.
