JAMES E. HARBAUGE AND FRANK H. BYBID, OF IWOBEBLY, MISSOURI.
FILING DEVICE.
Application filed February 7, 1921.
To all whom 2'25 may concern:
Be it known that we, JAMES HARBAUGH and FRANK Brno, citizens of the United States, residing at the city of Moberly, county of Randolph, State of Missouri, have jointly invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Filing Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part thereof.
This invention relates generally to furniture and, more particularly, to a certain new and useful improvement in filing devices for desks, cabinets, and the like, the chief object of our present invention being to provide means comprising one or more traypartitions, whereby a desk-drawer, drawer of a filing cabinet, or the like may be selectively divided into a plurality of preferably obliquely disposed compartments for the filing of different kinds or classes of papers, documents, stationery, and so on.
Another object of our present invention is to provide the drawer-dividing tray or partition of telescopically adjustable members,
whereby the dimensions of the tray or partition may be conveniently varied to fit drawers of various widths.
A further object of our present invention is to provide the drawer and the tray or partition with co-operating means, whereby the tray or partition may be detachably secured in compartment-forming position in the drawer.
An'additional object of our present invention is to provide each tray with adjustable means, whereby each tray may be further divided into a plurality of sections or spaces for increasing the capacity of the t ay and drawer for separately receiving or filing different papers. stationery, and the like.
And with the above and other objects in view, our invention resides in the novel features of form, construction, arrangement, and combination of parts hereinafter described and afterwards pointed out in the claims.
in the accompanying" drawing,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a deskdrawer equipped with, and divided into a plurality of obliquely disposed compartments by, a plurality of trays or partitions embodying: our invention;
F'qure' 2 is perspective view of one of izbe'trays partitions: and
Serial No. 443,088.
Member A is preferably and suitably formed of sheet metal and comprises a floorsection 1 flanged upwardly at its rear end and at one side end to provide respectively a rear wall 2 and a side wall 3. Floor section'l at its front edge is upwardly inturned upon itself to provide a slide-way, as at 4, and rear wall 2 at its upper edge is downwardly inturned upon itself to provide a second similar slide-way. as at 5.
Member B is also preferably and suitably formed of sheet metal and likewise co1nprises a floor section 1 flanged upwardly at its rear end and at one side end to provide, respectively, a rear wall 2 and a side wall 3'. To form the complete tray. the members A and B are assembled with the floor-section l and rear wall 2 of member B overlapping, respectively. as best seen in Figure 2, upon the floor-section 1 and rear wall 2 of member A, with the respective front and upper edges of floor-section'l and rear wall 2' fitting telescopically for slidab'le movement in the ways 4 and 5, the members A and B so assembled and co-operating formins an open-end tray laterally adiustable in width, for purposes shortly appearing.
The trays or so-ca-lled' partitions so formed are adapted for use in connection, for instance, with a desk-drawer D, such as illustrated, and to this end. the side-wall and floor-sections of the tray-members A and B are suitably formed adiacent their front ends with opposite slotted o eninsrs 6-6,
engaged at its slots 66 with the hooks 7-7 and thereby supported obliquely within and. relatively to the drawer..
To divide thedrawer D into a plurality of compartments, the drawer is provided.
upon its side walls with a plurality of suit-- ably 'spacedpairs of vertically disposed slots: 8-8 with which are adapted for 'co-operation partitions or walls C, whereby each tray may be further divided into a plurality of distinct spaces or sections for thereception and separation of different kinds of papers, documents, files, and the like- Each of the walls C includes a member -9' bent upon. itself at its opposite side edges to provide opposed slide-ways 10 10, and a complementing member 11 telescopically fittingfor movement in the ways 10-10, whereby the wall C may be adjustably lengthened to it the adjusted width of its tray. lhe members 9 and '11 of each wall C are extended. outwardly and preferably laterally bent toprovide oppositely disposed bent ears 12-12 adapted to firmly, but removably, in traydividing position, fit in the slots 8 and engage the opposite-side walls of the tray. As best seen in Figure 8, the opposite side walls. of the tray are inwardly recessed at each slot 8 to provide pockets, as at 13, to accommodate within the plane of the wall the pro-- jecting bent ears l212, whereby a wall C may be readily adjusted or moved from one pair of slots 8 to another when its tray is.
disposed within a drawer D, and whereby also the projecting ears 12-12 of a wall C will offer no interference with the proper fitting of a tray within a drawer D. I
' Our new drawer-tray or partition may be inexpensively manufactured, may be readily arrangedin connection with a desk-drawer or the like, and is so constructed as to provide for a wide range of adjustments to efiiciently iit drawers ofa corresponding range in width.
We are aware that minor changes in the form, construction, arrangement, and combination of the several parts of our new tray may be made and-substituted for those herein shown and described without departing from. the nature and principle of our invention.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: a 1 a 1. An adjustable filing-tray for desk as drawers and the like oi various dimensions,
preferably provided with a plurality of suitthe tray being adapted to lit-within, and for engagement with the. opposite side walls of, the drawer and being formed of a pair of complementing members each including an entire side wall of the tray and a portion only of the floor and rear walls thereof, the one member overlapping at its floor and rear wall portions upon and telescopically engag- 2. An adjustable filing tray for, desk drawers and the like of various dimensions,
the tray being adapted to fit within, and for engagement with the opposite side walls of, the drawer and being formed of a pair of complementing members each including an entire side wall of the tray and a portion only of the floor and rear walls thereof, the floor and rear wall portions of one member being inturned upon themselves at, respectively, their front and top edges and the tray thereby provided with transverse slide-ways, the other member overlapping at its floor and rear wall portions upon the floor and rear wall. portions of the first member and engaging for movement at the front and top edges of its floor and rear wall portions in the slide-ways of the first member, whereby the tray as a whole is adjustable in width to correspond with the width of the particular drawer, the side walls of said members being oppositely disposed one to the other and the floor and rear wall portions of said members forming together the complete floor and rear wall of the tray. v
3. A drawer-tray including a pairof 'coinplementing members adjustably movable rel atively to each other to vary the dimensions 110 of the tray, in combination with an adjust- :able partitionwall adapted forseparable engagement with the tray members to divide the tray into distinct compartments, said partition wall also including a pair of complementing members adjustably movable relatively to each other to correspond with the adjusted dimensions of the tray.
4. A drawer-tray including a pair of complementing members adjustably movable relments, 4
5. A drawer-tray including a pair of coma plementing members adjustably movable rel... we;
atirely to each other to vary the dimensions of the tray, the opposite side walls of the tray being provided with a pair of aligning slots in combination with a partition-wall comprising a pair of telescopically connected members adapted to extend adjustably across the tray and to fit at their opposite ends in said slots to divide the tray into distinct compartments.
6. The combination with a drawer of fixed width provided upon its opposite side walls with oppositely disposed inwardly presented hooks, in combination with a tray adapted for disposition within the drawer, the tray including a pair of complementing side walled members telescopically laterally adjustable to vary the width of the tray to correspond with the fixed width of the drawer, each of the tray members being provided in its side wall with a closed-end slot whereby the tray as a whole is adapted for detachable engagement with said hooks.
In testimony whereof, we have signed our names to this specification.
- JAMES E. HARBAUGH.
