Be it known that I,
CALVIN SPENCER Vii the action of heat and of acids without detri mental effects, and is especially directed to alloys employed in the manufacture of retaining pins for artificial teeth.
The principal objects of my invention are to provide an alloy that m ay be employed in the manufacture of artificial teeth with an efficiency substantially equal toplatinum and with materially less expense.
My invention comprehe will withstand heat nds an alloy that sufiicient to fuse artificial teeth to the porcelain state, that will not oxidize, nor be affected by the acids contained in the fluids of the human mouth, and that will withstand the strains to which a tooth may be subjected incident to the action of biting or chewing.
Specifically stated, the form of my invention as hereinafter described. comprises an alloy having as its principal constituents,
gold, platinum and palladium, with the gold predominating and the platinum forming a small proportion of the resultant metal.
My invention also includes all of the various novel features as definitely specified. It is commonly hereinafter more known that it requires heat of very high temperature to fuse or fire teeth formed of ceramic material, and that the only precious metals that have been satist'acto1.'il baked in a'tooth body to form attaching means for the tooth,
without fusing or otherwise disintegrating, are platinum or alloy rich in platinum or palladlum, and
that owing to I high cost of platinum, va
the scarcity and consequent rious means have been devised or suggested to reduce the amount of platinum or pa in tooth attachments.
lladium employed Application filed may 10, 1919. Serial No. 296,177.
I have found that a metal having all of 5c the desirable characteristics of platinum for the production of pins for artificial teeth may be produced with a relatively small proportion of platinum, whereby the cost of production may be greatly reduced.
An alloy which produces the desirable results, contains gold, platinum and palladium, with the gold predominating to a large degree, and with the platinum forming a relatively small proportion; the gold forming about 4%) per cent and the platinum forming about 14 per cent of the resultant metal. i
I have found that by the introduction of a small amount of copper, the alloy formed of gold, palladium and platinum may be greatly stiifened and hardened, and that an alloy which embodies the most desirable characteristics may be composed of 49 per cent gold, 37 per cent palladium, 13.45 per cent platinum, and .55 per cent copper.
I do not desire to limit my invention to the precise proportions herein specified, as it is obvious that various modifications may be made therein without departing from the essential features of my invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. An alloy containing gold, palladium and platinum, in the proportions approximating 49 per cent gold, 87 per cent'palladium, and 14 per cent platinum.
2. An alloy containin gold, palladium, platinum and copper, in the proportions approximating 49 per cent gold, 37 per cent palladium, 13.45 per cent platinum, and .55 per cent copper.
3. An alloy of gold, palladium and platinum, with the palladium and platinum-em- 90 bodied in'essential quantities and together approximately equal to the quantity of the 0 g 4. An alloy consisting of gold, palladium, platinum and copper in essential proportions as decreasing in the order named.
5. An alloy of gold, platinum, palladium and copper, with the palladium and platinum embodied in quantities together ap proximately equal to the quantity of the gold and the copper forming a small proportlon of the alloy but embodied in an amount essential to produce a characteristic stiffness and hardness to the alloy.
In Witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 7th day of May, A. D., 1919.
