to shift the directionin which the'dirt is thrown, by one man. It is a further object of the invention to provide automatic means operable upon the teams connected to the two longitudinal members of the drag for checking one of said teams while relievin the restraining action upon the other of sai teams to thereby cause one of said teams to forge ahead of the other to throw the transverse members of the drag to an angle to the line of travel of the drag as a whole.
Further objects and advantages of the parts in both of the figures of the drawing.
Referring to the drawing it will be seen that the improved drag comprises longitudinal beams 5 and 6 and several transversely disposed boards 7. These boards are flexibly mounted with respect to the beams by means of eyes 8 that are carried by the boards and embrace vertical rods 9. At
their upper ends these rods are bent at right angles to pass through the beams 5 and 6 and are held in place by[ nuts 10. The lower ends of the rods 9 are extended rearwardly in arcuate formation as indicated at 11 and are provided with flattened portions 12 which lie alongside of the beams 5 and 6, said flattened portions being provided with a plurality of openings 13 adapted to be engaged by transverse fastening members 14 which pass through the beams, this construction serving to adjust the angle of the rods 9 so that the boards 7 may be caused to lie at anydesired angle to the vertical. A seat bar 15. supports a seat 16 and the [lower end i of the sea't bar 15 is supportedupon a bar or. strap 17",the rear end of Which sup 3 ported upon the ,upper edge of one ofthe boards and the forward end of which is secured to a rearward extension 18.projecting from the upper end of one of the rods 9. Theseat bar 15 has an upturned ear 19 upon its forward end. and the rearward extension 18 has anupturned ear 2O uponits rear end.
A. vertical rod 21 has a bent rearwardly extending portion 22 which is journaled in the ears 19 and v2O and at its rear end is provided with a. transverse footwpiece 23. A
driver seated inthe seat, 16,:may by pressing upon one end or the other of the transverse foot piece 23 swing the vertical bar 21 to the right or left desired. This back and forth swinging movement of the bar 21 is utilized to control the teams, which in the operation of the drag are hitched to the .clevises 24c located at the front ends of the- One end of a cable is fixed beams 5 and G, at 25 to the bar 21 and passes rearwardly at 26 to and about a pulley 27 mounted upon the beam 5, passing thence through an opening formed in the bar 21. and extending forwardly at 28 to the bit 29 of the left hand team.
It is to be understood that the illustration of the bit is merely diagrammatic. The team may comprise any desired number of horses.
In like manner one end of the cable 30 is connected to the rod 21 and this cable passes over a pulley 32 upon the beam 6, passing thence at 38 through the rod 21 and extending forwardly at 34c to the bit 35 of the right hand team.
Thus if the driver press with his right foot upon the foot piece 23 the right hand cable will be slackened and the left hand cable will be tightened to impart a pull upon the bit 29 of the left hand team, this will hold back the left hand team and permit the right hand team to forge ahead, thus throwing the boards 7 to an angle to the general line of travel of the drag as a whole.
It is manifest that the boards 7 will be thrown to the opposite angle if the driver presses upon the foot piece 23 with his left foot, to thereby slacken the cable 28 and tighten the cable 3a to restrain the right hand team and permit the left hand team to forge ahead.
It is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the precise. construction set forth but that it includes within its purview whatever changes fairly come within either the terms or the spirit of the appended claims.
Having described my invention, What I claim is:
1. A drag comprising a pair of longitudinally extending beams freely movable longitudinally independently of each other, means for hitching to the ends of each of said beams, a plurality of transversely ex longitudinally. independently of each other, means for hitching a team to the end of each of said beams, a plurality of transversely extending boards set edgewise, vertical hinges between said beams and said boards which hold said boards upright and permit them to move to varying positions of angularity in a horizontal plane, with respect to said beams, an upstanding oscillatory rod, a foot piece upon said rod by. which said rod may be moved back and forth laterally by the driver of the drag and cables having engagement with said rod and adapted for engage ment with the bits of teams hitched to the ends of said beams, whereby lateral movement of said rod imparts a pull upon one of said cables and slackens the other of said cables.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
