UNITED STATES PATENT, OFFICE.
v HOWARD ALFRED LANG, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI.
SUIT .BOX AND HANGER.
Application filed August 5, 1921. Serial No. 490,118.
To all whom it may concern:
Be itk'nown that HOWARD ALFRED LANG,
. acititen of the United States of America,
residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, has invented new and useful Improvements in Suit Boxes creasing and Hangers, of which the following is a specification The object of the invention is to provide a convertible suit box and hanger adapted for'use in transporting suits, and particularly mens suits in a folded and pressed condition so as to prevent the improper or rumpling of the same, said box being adapted when the suit has reached its destination to be used as a hanger and protector for the suit to prevent access of dust thereto while suspended for example in the clothes closet or from a suspending hook or nail on the wall; and in this connectionto provide a device for the purpose indicated wherein the pressed'and properly creased shape of the garment is maintained against crushing action particularly while the package is in transport; and with this object in view the invention consists in a construction and combination of parts of which a preferred embodiment is shown in the acwhich the article is formed.
from
v l The device consisting essentially of a box having a receptacle or body portion or member 10 and a cover or lid portion or member 11 and the garment hanger feature or member 12, with the several interlocking and fastening means whereby the said members are held in proper form and are secured-in the "folded -'or box condition, is constructed from a single blank of sheet material such bent or folded to enable as cardboard, pasteboard, strawboard or any equivalent thereof which is adapted to be the several parts thereof to be arranged in their proper rela- ,tive positions and then to be extended and subsequently if desired refolded with the minimum tendency to break or split at the fold or crease lines, so that the article may be used repeatedly for the same purpose as for example in the transportation of a suit of clothes from the customer to the cleaner or the-pressing establishment and the return thereof in proper condition for wear, and the mtervening protection and suspension of the suit while in the custody of the customer or owner when not in actual use.
The main folds 10 and 11 representing as above indicated the box or receptacle member and the cover or lid member are connected by the wallmember 13 at opposite sides of which are formed the crease lines 13*, and at the ends of said wall member are provided the extensions forming locking tongues 14 for engagement, in the folded condition of the receptacle, with complemental slots 15in the end flaps 16 of the cover member, and at the free edge of the cover member there is arranged a wall flap 17 correspondingly provided with terminal tongues 18 for interlocking. engagement with slots 19 also in the end flaps 16 of the cover member and in addition the end flap 17 is provided with a locking tongue 20 for engagement when the box is closed with a slot 21 formed in the end flap 22 at the free edge of the body member 10 as a means of holding the box in its closed condition. Said end flap 22 is provided with terminal tongues 22 similar to those arranged at the ends of the flaps 13 and 17 for interlocking engagement with slots 23 on the end flaps 24 of the main fold and serving as in reference to the top or cover fold to maintain said wall flaps in proper perpendicular relation with the bottom and top folds of the rece tacle. t
T e hanger member consists of a coat form 25 connected with the end wall flap v 22 of the body fold by a reduced orneck portion 26 foldable wlth reference to said flap upon a crease line 27 and which constitutes in the construction illustrated a continuation of the slot 21 by which an interlocking engagement is eflected between the terminal flaps 17 and 22 of the cover and body members of the receptacle to hold the latter in its closed position, a key hole or hanger slot 28 also being provided in said reduced extension or neck portion 26 for engagement with a suspended hook or nail on the wall or in the closet when the device is used as a suit hanger and the box portion thereof as a protection against dust and in which latter position the cover member is arranged in extended relation with the body member as shown in Figure 3 as distinguished from its folded position to constitute a box as indicated in Figure 1.
The coat form 25 is provided with shoulder flaps 29 foldable upon crease lines 30 and having terminal locking tongues 31 for engagement with the complemental slits 32 formed in under arm flaps 33 disposed at the ends of the coat form fold and adapted to be folded with reference thereto upon a crease line 34 into overlapping relation with said coat form fold 25 where they are held by the engagement of locking tongues 35 with complemental slits 36. These under arm flaps in connection with the cooperating shoulder flaps, both of which bulge from the plane of the coat form fold when the fastening means thereof are in their interlocked relation serve as means for holding a garment such as a coat suspended by its shoulder portions on the form at the crease' line 30 in anexpanded condition so as to prevent the creasing of the coat or of the garment on undesirable lines or by reason of any pressure or crushing action which may be applied exteriorly to the box when the suit is housed therein, and in addition to these yielding or cushioning elements and as a further means of preventing the crushing of garments suspended on the hanger member of the device an intermediate cushion 37 is provided between the inner edges of the under arm flaps and consisting of a wing 38 having terminal locking tongues 39 and an intermediate fold line 40 and being connected with the coat form fold at the crease line 41, said terminal tongues 39 being adapted for engagement with complemental slits 42 which serve by their relative arragement with the other elements to hold the tongue in a bulged or bowed position as indicated in Figures 2 and 4. Transversely of the coat form or hanger fold 25 and at opposite sides of the transverse plane of the cushioning elements 37 are formed trouser slots 43 and 44 through which the trouser legs in a longitudinally folded condition (as in practice when arranged in the same for packing) are threaded to maintain them in proper position and maintain the crease lines thereof, the bending portions of the trouser legs being separated by the cushion member 37 to prevent crushing when the hanger member is folded within the box members for transportation.
Obviously the tail or skirt portion of the coat must be folded upward after the hanger member has been arranged within the box portion to lie on the upper surface of the portion ofthe coat-which is engaged with the'shoulder members of the coat form fold.
Having described the invention what is claimed as new and useful is l. A convertible suit box and hanger having connected body and cover folds carrying wall flaps and means for securing the same in their folded relation, and a hanger fold having a neck portion in fold line connection with the free end of one of said first-named folds for arrangement in suit supporting position within the space enclosed by said first-named folds when the latter are arranged in their folded relation and bounded on one side by said folds when the latter are in their extended position.

3. A convertible suit box and hanger having connected body and cover folds carrying wall flaps and means for securing the same in their folded relation, and a hanger fold having a neck portion in fold line connection with the free end of one of said firstnamed folds for arrangement in suit supporting position within the space enclosed by said first-named folds when thelatter are ar ranged in their folded relation and bounded on one side by said folds when the latter are in their extended position, said hanger member having a coat form fold provided with under arm cushioning flaps foldable into overlapping relation therewith.
