1 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD I. SOHAEFER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Heating and Ventilating Attachments for Chimney Flues, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to chimney fines and an object thereof is to provide a chimney flue with an improved means by which a room may be heated and ventilated from such flue.
To this and other ends the invention consists of certain parts and combinations of parts, all of which will be hereinafter described, the novel features being pointed out in the appended claims.

Referring more particularly to the drawing, 1 indicates a chimney which has the usual passage 2 extending therethrough. In as one wall of the chimney an opening is provided in which is inserted a chambered member 3 having a surrounding flange 4 at its front for abutting the front face of the chimney. A grille plate 5 may be secured 4.0 over the front face of the chambered member in engagement with the flange 4.
The chambered member 3 has vertical side walls 6 extended across the flue and is substantially of the width as the fine. A flange 45 7 flush with the front face of the fine is provided on the bottom wall of the chamber and on the side walls 6.
The opposite inner faces of the side walls of the chambered member are provided with 50 horizontal guides 9, in this instance, two guides being provided on each side wall. On these uides operate valves, each comprising a horizontal portion 10 of slightly greater length than the flue passageway 2, 55 anda vertical ortion 11 at the inner end of the horizonta f portion 1O. The horizontalportion operates on the guides, while the vertical portion is adapted tocooperate with the flange 7. The vertical portions 11 of the two valves, when both are cooperating with the flanges 7, close the opening between the chamber 8 and the flue passageway 2 so that the flue passageway is unobstructed by the valves. When the valves are moved inwardly to their innermost positions, the horizontal portions 10 will lie across the flue passageway 2, but a passageway will be provided around the forward edges of the horizontal portions 10 between the two portions of the flue on opposite sides of the valves. The valves are independently adjustable and this adjustment may be effected by providing each of them with an opening 12 in its horizontal portion in which a hook member 13 may be engaged for the purpose of 7 5 shifting such valves.
It is apparent that either or both valves may be opened or closed either wholly or partially. This arrangement provides for the ventilation of a room through the chimney fine when the heating apparatus which connects with the flue is not throwing off gas. Should gas be passing through the flue, the chamber 8 may be closed to the flue passageway. It is also possible to conduct heat from the furnace flue into the room after the gas has been driven off the heating apparatus. Furthermore, when the cham ber 53 is closed to the flue, the valves 11 will become heated and will throw heat into the room.
From the foregoing it will be seen that there has been provided a heater and ventilator of simple construction which may be readily attached to a chimney flue and easily operated to ventilate a room or heat the same.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination with a chimney having a passageway therethrough, of a chamber opening to the exterior of the chimney and lying to one side of the passageway through said chimney and communicating with the passageway, of means movable to close said chamber to the passageway or to open said chamber to the passageway above and below the chamber.
2. The combination with a chimney flue and a chamber extending through a wall no thereof, of a slide valve having a horizontal portion, and a vertical portion at the inner edge oi": the horizontal portion, the hori zontal' portion beingadapted when in its innermost position to bridge the flue passageway, and whenin itsoutermost position, to lie in the chamber and carry the vertical portion to a position where it will,-suhstantially form a continuation of the front wall of the flue passageway.
3. The combination with a chimney flue and a chamber extending through a wall thereof, of a plurality of horizontally movable valves, each having a horizontal portion and a' vertical portion, the vertical portions being adapted, when the valves are moved outwardly, to close the chamber to the chimney and the horizontal portions being adapted, when the valves are moved inwardly, tobridge the flue passageway.
4. The combination with a chimney having apassageway therethrough, and a chamber opening to the exterior of the chimney and arranged entirely to one side of the passageway through the chimney, of means closing the chamber to the passageway and movable to bridge the passageway to open the chamber to the passageway and to provide a passageway through the chamber from the passageway below the chamber to the passageway above the chamber.
5. The combination with a chimney hav- ,mg an opening 1n one wall thereof, of a chambered member arranged in said opening and havinga grille at its front and flanges at its rear projecting into the flue passageway, horizontal guides formed on the opposite vertical walls of the chamber and the flanges, valves operating on said guides, each valve comprising a horizontal portion, and a vertical portion at the inner edge of the horizontal portion, the vertical portions being adapted to close the chamber to the flue passageway and the horizontal portions being adapted to bridge the flue aassa' ewa when the valves are in their innermost positions, while providing a connection through the chamber between the flue passageway below the chamber and the flue-passageway above the chamber.
