COOLING AND VENTILATI'NG APPARATUS.

Be it known that I, BERNARR MACFADDEN, a citizen {of the United States, residing in New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cooling of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an apparatus for cooling and ventilating, and is particularly adapted for use in connection with restaurants, public halls', and like places, where the problem of ventilating and cooling has always been a serious one. 1
This invention relates more particularly to the apparatus for cooling and ventilating described and claimed in United States Letters Patent of Macfadden and Moumblo-w, cooling and ventilating apparatus, No. 1,228,939, patented June 5, 1917.
In this patent there is shown a casing through which the ventilating air to be and therein sprayed with water to form an air and water spray mist which plays upon combined evaporatorsand-eliminators composed of material, such as felt, which readily becomes saturated with water carried over from the spray, whence the water is evaporated and materially assists in the cooling of the air passing over the combined evaporators and eliminators.
In practice it has been found that the and water spray beating upon these felts wear them out, the wear being greater near the sprays.
The object of the present invention is to overcome this wear, and it has been found that, for some reason not fully understood, this wear except right at the intake end, may be eliminated by roviding an open-mesh wire netting'exten 'ng under and supporting each combined eliminator-and-evaporator substantially from end-to-end and edgeto-edge thereof. For preventing the excessive wear at said intake end I provide, a galvanized sheet iron channel-shape shield enclosing each of said ends, and clamping bolts passing through the sides of said shields and said ends for clamping them in place thus preventing the wear and forming an eificient anchorage for said ends. I
Other objects of the invention will appear as the description proceeds, and while herein minute details of the invention are disclosed, the invention is not limited to these, since many and va ious changes may be made inators and the protectin without departing from the scope of the invention as claimed.
In the accompanying drawings showing by way of example one of many possible embodiments of the invention,

Fig. 3 is a. somewhat diagrammatic sectional view, taken on the line 33 of Fig.
2, showing the clamping means at the end pf the combined evaporators-and-eliminaors.
Referring now more particularly to Fig. 1, a casing 10 having an open end 11, and a discharge end wall 12, and side walls 13 contains the various parts of the device.
The said wall 12 is provided with an outlet opening 14 adjacent to which is mounted a fan or blower 15 carried by the shaft 16 of a motor 17 supported in any convenient manner, the purpose of said fan being to draw air through the casing and to discharge the cooled air into conduit A, through which it is then conducted to a room, hall or any desired place.
At its open end, the casing is provided with a coil 18, which is connected at its lower end by a pipe 19 to a supply of iced water or other source of water supply (not shown). At its upper end, the coil is connected to pipe 20 carrying spray nozzles 22 for spraying water in finelydivided form upon the combined evaporators and eliminators 25, which have a most important function in this apparatus, as fully explained in said patent.
Such combined evaporators-and-eliminators 25 may be composed of. any desired material, such as felt, which readily becomes saturated with water carried over from the spray, whence the water is evaporated and materially assists in the cooling of the air passing over the combined evaporators-andeliminators.
The combined eliminators-and-evaporators are disposed one above the other between said spray nozzles and said outlet and form between themselves a series of sinuous'paths An open-mesh wire netting 26 supports and extends under each combined elimi- .end-to-end and edge-to-edge; and the nettings are supported by a plurality of superposed series oftransverse supporting bars 29 extending from side to side of the casing, the bars of each series being arranged in staggered relation and support one of said nettings 26 and the combined eliminatorand-evaporator varies thereon. Each end of said netting 26 and combined eliminatorand-evapo rator 25 is folded back upon itself, as shown in Fig. 3, over, around and under the end bar 29 of its supporting series; and a channel-shaped shield 30 of galvanized sheet iron or other suitable material encloses each of said folded ends. F or purposes of inspection or repair, the casing is provided with a door 35 in the side wall 13.
In order to carry ofi any excess of water from the bottom of the casing, an outlet pipe 36 is provided.
f the coils 18 are to be used, the valve 38 is closed and the valve 39 opened, thus forcing the water through the coils and out at the nozzles. If the coils are not. to be used, the valve 39 is closed and the valve 38 is opened; thus cutting out the coils. Nat- "urally the provision of the coils 18 is not necessary, and; they may be omitted if desired.
The operation of the device is as follows The water being admitted to the coil 18 and the nozzles or to the nozzles alone, the
masses motor is started and the air is drawn into the casing over the coil, and is then drawn through the spray and being brought into contact with the cold water thereby cooled. It is then drawn over the combined evaporators-and-eliminators, which become saturated with the water carried by the current of air, and subsequently this water is evaporated, thus still further cooling the air. The cooled air is then drawn into the conduit A and conducted to any desired place.
While the embodiment of the invention herein shown has the wire netting disposed beneath the felt or cloth rather than in it or at its upper face, this is not mechanically necessary, and it is noted that the as claimed is not so limited.
I claim as my invention:
1. In combination, absorbent sheets of felt; means supporting said sheets interme diately and at an end of said sheets; means for spraying Water upon said sheets at said end; a shield enclosing said end of the sheets to protect it from Wear by said spray; and means for causing a draft of air to pass over said sheets.
2. In combination, absorbent sheets; transverse bars supporting said sheets; an end of said sheets being folded around one of said bars; a sheet metal shield enclosing the folded end and supporting bar; means for spraying water upon said end and means for causing a draft of air to pass over said sheets.
