AUTOMOBILE HEATER.
Application filed July 9, 1917, Serial No. 179,344. Renewed April 21, 19252.. Serial No. 555,915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I,\DUANE, W. ALEXAN to provide a highly eflicient but inexpensive device of the character specified.
In the drawings, Fig. 1 is a vertical centralsection of a radiator embodying the in vention, the section being in the plane indicated by line 'A B on Fig. 3; Fig.- 2 is a plan view of the radiator with a portion of the radiator plate broken away; Fig. 3 isl, a horizontal section in the plane of'line C-D on Fig. l.
The device as shown consists of three pieces, namely, the body A, the as conduit cover B, and the register plate In the body is the air flue 10 which is substantially U-shaped in vertical section, as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing. Both of the branches 10 and 10" of this air flue are open at their upper ends, and the outer inlet branch 10 is extended above the inner discharge branch 10". The space between said two branches serves as a gas conduit 12; and said air fiues are so shaped that this gas conduit follows a substantially spiral course from the inlet 12 thereto, at the outer edge (i the body, to a centrally "disposed gas. chamber. 14, with which the spiral gas conduit is connected so that the gas discharged therefrom willenter said chamber in a substantially tangential direction. The gas conduit cover plate 15 fits within the outer branch of the air flue, and is secured to the'body so as to close the upper and otherwise open, part of the spiral gas conduit. This cover plate is formed on its under side with ,a boss 15 through which is a cylindrical hole that serves as a bear ing for the fan shaft 16 that is rotatably.

The inlet end of the gas conduit is to be connected with the'exhaust pipe leading from the engine, while another part of'the exhaust pipe or the muflleris to be connected overthe outlet at the lower-end of the central'ch'amben- When the engine is inoperation the hot exhaust gases will be discharged into the spiral gas conduit, and thereby the walls of said conduit will be heated. An automobile heater containing air flues which are U-shaped in vertical section, a gas spiral conduit in the U-shaped space between the branches of said air flue, and a centrally disposed gas chamber into which the spiral gas conduit discharges,said gas chamber having its outlet through its lower end, combined with a plate which serves as the top wall of the gas conduit and central gas chamber, an air chamber above said plate in communication with one branch only ofthe air flue, and a register plate which forms the top of said air chamber.
3. An automobile heater containing air fiues which are U-shaped in vertical section, a gas conduit in the U-shaped space between the branches of said air flue, and a centrally disposed gas chamber into which the spiral gas conduit discharges,said gas chamber having its outletthrough its lower end, a cover plate which serves as the top wall of thegas conduit and central gas chamber, an air chamber above said plate in communication with one branch only of the air flue, a register plate which forms the top of said air chamber, a vertical shaft rotatably mounted in the said cover plate, driving blades fixed to the part of said shaft within said central gas chamber, and suction fan blades secured to the part of the shaft within the air chamber.

An automobile heater comprising a body portion in which are formed air fiues that are substantially U-shaped in vertical section and are arranged so that the space between the branches of the air flue shall follow a spiral path, and thereby form a spiral gas conduit, a centrally disposed gas chamber in communication with said spiral conduit, the outer branch of the air flue being extended above the other parts of said body, a cover plate fixed to the top of said body within the outer branch of the air flue and serving to cover said spiral conduit, and having a large number of holes in communication with the inner branch of the air flue, and a register plate fixed to the upper end of that part of the body in which ,is the long branch of said air fiue,said register plate having numerous perforations which communicate with the long branch of said air flue and numerous other perforations which communicate with the space between itself and the said cover plate.

An automobile heater comprising a casing closed at the sides and bottom said casing having walls which provide a centrally disposed chamber the bottom of the casing having an opening which communicates with said central chamber, the casing having a spirally arranged passageway communicating with the said central chamber, the casing also having an inlet which com- 75 municates with an end of said spiral passageway said casing having parallel air passageways which communicate at one end which passageways are separated by convolutions of the spiral passageway, the casing being provided with an air inlet to a part of said passageways and an outlet from the other part of said passageway both the inlet and the outlet being located at the same end of the casing.

An automobile heater comprising. a body portion in which are formed air flues that are substantially U-shaped in vertical section and are arranged so that the space between the branches of the air flue shall follow a spiral path and thereby form a spiral gas conduit, a centrally disposed gas chamber in communication with said spiral conduit, the outer branch of the air flue being extended above the other parts of said body, a cover plate fixed to the top of said body within the outer branch of the air flue and serving to cover said spiral conduit, and having a large number of holes in communication with the inner branch of the 100 air flue, a register plate fixed to the upper end of that part of the body in which is the long branch of said air fiue,said register plate having numerous perforations which communicate with the long branch 105 of said air flue and numerous other perforations which communicate with the space between itself and the plates which cover the gas conduit, a shaft rotatably mounted in the cover plate and extending through 110 the same, twisted blades fixed to the lower end of said shaft, and inclined blades fixed to the end of said shaft above said cover plate.
