' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JEREMIAH S. OLDS, OF HUNTINGTON PARK, CALIFORNIA.
HEATER.
T 0 (till whom it may concern Be it known that I, JEREMIAH S. OLns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Huntington Park, in the county of Los Angeles'and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Heaters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to heat exchange and particularly to a means for deriving heat from the escaping products of combustion in chimneys, and has for its object to provide an apparatus whereby air can be drawn inwardly through a conductor that is so located in a chimney that the heat units ordinarily going to waste may be utilized to heat the indrawn stream of air, and to provide means for discharging the thus heated air, as may be desired, into various rooms or compartments. The invention consists of the features illustrated in the accompanying drawings and claimed and described hereinafter.
Figure l is a perspective of a chimney having a fire-place, the chimney being partly broken away and also showing a portion of the compartment in which the fire-place may be arranged.
Fig. 2 is a detail, vertical, sectional view through the chimney and fire-place showing the installed heat absorbing conductor.
Fig. 3 is a sectional detail of a modified form of fire-place heat absorbing conductor.
In the drawings a portion of a room R is disclosed in which is arranged a fire-place 2 from which extends a chimney 3, and for the purpose of utilizing the waste heat passing up the chimney I have arranged a suitable conductor, a form of which includes a pipe 4 which may be laid in a desired manner to derive maximum heating efficiency from the escaping heated products, and such an arrangement is shown as by forming the pipe l in a helix formed approximately to the transverse section of the chimney and lying against the walls of the flue thereof.
lVhile the present invention may be utilized in various types of chimneys it is shown as organized in a chimney having a fireplace and in such case the heating conducting member at is formed with atortuous heating section l disposed in the throat of the chimney on the upwardly and forwardly inclining surface of the throat where the heat of the fire-place is concentrated and is greatest before passing out of the chimney. Preferably, the heat section 4' of the heating Specification of Letters Patent. Patented BIal. 15, 1921.
Application filed November 7, 1919.
Serial No. 336,392.
and heat absorbing device is shown in Fig.
3 wherein the pipe 4 is suitably connected to the terminal of a circuitous passage way 4 that is formed in a hollow block or casting 6 that may be suitably supported in the fire-place opening.
F or the purpose of obtaininga constant flow or circulation of air int-o and through the conducting members, I have introduced into the same a simple fan or blower indicated at 7 which may be arranged beneath the floor of the compartment or room, and the intake side of this fan is shown as con nected by a pipe 8 to the lower end of the intermediate conductor portion 4 so that when the blower is set in operation there will be induced a flow of air from the inlet 9 of the conductor 4; this inlet being disposed at any suitable location either Within or without the building so that air may freely pass into the conductors and be heated in traversing the heated chimney gases and also by the heating of the member 4 by almost direct contact with the flames of combustion.
The out-let 10 from the blower is connected to a pipe 11 and this may be extended to any suitable location at which is provided a register 12 through which the warmed air will be discharged into the desired chamber or compartment.
Various changes may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention as claimed.
I claim:
1. In combination with a chimney and an open fire-place formed with a forwardly and upwardly inclined rear throat wall lead ing to the chimney, an air conductor formed with a tortuous heating section placed on said inclined throat wall, and means for producing a forced circulation of air through the conductor and discharging the heated air through a desired outlet.
2. In combination with a chimney and an open fire-place formed with a forwardly and upwardly inclined rear throat wall leading to the chimney, an air conductor formed with a tortuous heating section placed on said inclined throat wall, means for producing a forced circulation of air through the conductor and discharging the heated air through a desired outlet, and a. body of fire resistant material in which said heating sec tion is embedded.
3. In combination with a chimney and an open fire-place formed with a forwardly and upwardly inclined rear throat Wall leading to the chimney, an air conductor formed with a tortuous heat ng section placed on said inclined throat wall and with a helical section leading from said tortuous section 10 In testimony whereof I have signed my 15 name to this specification.
