RECIPROCATING STRAIGHT-MOTION PUMP.
Application filed April 23, 1921. Serial No. 463,886.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, KURAsUKE SAEKI, a subject'of the Emperor of Japan, residing at No. 17 Rokuchome Aoyama Miuamicho, Akasaka-ku, city of Tokyo, Japan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reciprocating Straight-Motion Pumps, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention has reference generally to improvements in that class of inventions known as pumps and more particularly relates to hand operated mechanism having a straight line motion. v
The invention has for its primaryobject to provide mechanism of the above mentioned character of novel construction which is applicable to the usual hand pumps with a view of minimizing lateral pressure on the pump piston; to reduce wear on the piston and the wall of the pump cylinder and to arrange the parts so as to provide for an easy and effective operation.
More particularly the invention consists in the provision of an operating mechanism for pumps having astraight line motion which consists briefly of an auxiliary lever which is arranged substantially vertically of the pump rod and directly. connected to the upper end thereof, a side bar or link fulcrumed on the pump frame and pivotally connected to the other end of the auxiliary lever, and a handle pivotally connected with the auxiliary lever substantially medially of the latter, the pivot points of the handle and side bar or link being arranged on the same side of the piston rod.
Other objects as well as the nature, characteristic features and scope of this invention will be more readily apparent from the.

Heretofore it has been the custom to operate hand pumps through the instrumentality of a handle connected to the upper end of the piston or pump rod, the wall of the cyl- 1 inder of thev pump being therefore subjected to-heavy lateral pressure especially at the extremities of the stroke. The result has been a deformation of the cylinder bore and wear on the piston and the cylinder, thereby causing a loss of power and a loss of water by leakage. I The present invention consists in the provision of an operating mechanism having an approximate straight line motion so as to eliminate the defects mentioned instant to the use of the other handle.
Prior to explaining the practical application of the invention to a pump, reference Will be had to Fig. 1 wherein theprinciple is diagrammatically illustrated and in which 0! and e represent the fulcrums of a handle A and an auxiliary lever B respectively. The auxiliary lever is pivoted'at its free end a to a side bar or link E to which the handle A is connected at b, the sidebar being also directly connected to av piston rod F at 0. .When the handle A is oscillated about the fulcrum e to describe an arc of a circle a, a a etc., the auxiliary lever B will also describe an are b, 1),, 6 etc. at the free end. In other words, when the handle A is moved downwardly from the position b to the position 6 the auxiliary lever B moves from the position a to the position a while the pivot point 0 assumes the position 0,. Continued oscillation of the handle A causes the pivot including a'frame which supports a cylinder H in which a piston G operates. A rod F is connected with the piston and 1s reciprocated by the improved mechamsm one convenient form of which includes a handle A fulcrumed to the free end of the pump at e.
An auxiliary-leverB is fulcrumed medially of its ends to the inner end of the handle A at b, one end of the lever B being directly ivoted as at c to the upper end of the rod F. oacting with the handle A and guiding the movement of the lever B is a link E the respective ends of which are pivotally connected at a? to the frame and to the opposite end of the lever B as at a. It will be appreciated in View of the foregoing that upon oscillation of the handle A by reason of the substantial vertical position maintained by the auxiliary lever B owing to the link E, the pump rod F is reciprocated while the point of connection 0 of the lever B to the rod F is maintained in a substantial straight path during the reciprocation as indicated in the dotted lines in Fig. 2, thereby obviating wear and deformation of the piston and cylinder wall of the. pump in addition to forming a mechanism which may be easily operated.
It is believed in view of the foregoing that a further detailed description of the operation of the invention is entirely unnecessary. Likewise it is believed that the advantages of the invention will be readily apparent.
Having thus fully described the invention what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
1. Mechanism having straight line motion for reciprocating the approximately eas-s15 piston rod of a pump including a pivotally mounted handle, a pivotally mounted link and an auxiliary lever fulcrumed to the handle and pivotally connected with the link and the rod of the pump, substantially as and for the purposes set forth. I
2. A pump operating-mechanism having a straight line motion including in combination, a cylinder, a piston operating therein, a rod connected to the piston, a pivotally mounted handle, an auxiliary lever arranged substantially vertically and fulcrumed medially of its ends to the handle and pivoted at one end to the rod, a pivotally mounted link having its outer end pivotally connected to the opposite end of the auxiliary lever, and the pivot points of the handle and the link being on the same side of the rod, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
