Description
T. L. BUCKLEY.
Wrenches. N0. 144,826. I Patente d Nov. 25,1873.
L Mimi-m:
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
' TIMOTHY L. BUoKLEY, 0E MANKATO, MINNEsOTA.
IMPROVEMENT IN WRENCHES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 144,826. dated November 25, 187 3; application filed 7 July 12, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, TIMOTHY L. BUOKLEY, of Mankato, in the county of Blue Earth and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Adjustable Sooket- Brace Extension- VVrench; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
This invention is designed for use in screwing up or unscrewing bolts, nuts, &c.; and consists, mainly, in the combination of a brace, having a solid end of peculiar construction, with an adjustable arm attached to the said end, the two parts coacting to form an adjustable socket-wrench, adapted to be used in a similar manner to a brace, as will be fully described hereinafter.
-In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my improved wrench. Figs. 2, 3, 4, and 5, various views of the socket-end.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to fully describe its construction.
A represents the brace portion of the wrench, the upper part of which may be constructed in the usual well-known or other proper manner. Its lower portion is provided with a solid extension, ct, which may be of any suitable length, according to the place to be reached by it. This extension is provided with an arm, a enlargement a tapering end a having a recess, a, as shown. 11 represents an arm, corresponding in general form with the extension at of thewrench, and whichis pivoted to the arm a as sh own. It is provided with the enlargement b tapering end b having recess 1), and has also, in addition, the recess 12 for the reception of the spring 0. 0 represents a threaded rod or pin, which is rigidly secured at one end to the extension a, as shown, and projects through the orifice of enlargement I), as shown. d represents a thumb-screw, which is adapted to turn up the end of the threaded rod 0. 0 represents a flat metallic spring, suitably bent, which is held in the recess b of the pivoted arm I).
The operation of the wrench will be readily understood. The two parts a and b, with the recesses a and I), are adapted to inclose a bolt or nut, and fully hold the same, while the brace is operated to screw up or unscrew the same. The arm may be adjusted, by means of the set-screw and spring, to inclose a larger or smaller size, as may be necessary. By means of the tapering ends the Wrench is adapted to work in small spaces. It may of course be used for any purpose for which it is adapted, and be made of any suitable size.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The wrench described, consisting of the brace A, having the solid portion a, with arm a and rod 0, pivoted arm I) with enlarged opening for the rod 0, independent spring 0, and recess b adapted to hold the spring with out other fastening, and set-screw d, combined and arranged as described.
This specification signed and witnessed this 25th day of June, 1873.
TIMOTHY L. BUOKLEY.
Witnesses CHARLES E. SHANNON, B. S. OULLEN.
