ALFRED C. GILBERT, 0E NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT, AssICNoR To TI'IE A. C. CIEBEET CCNIPANY, or NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT, A CORPORATION OE CONNECTICUT.
TOY vEHICLE'.
Application med July 14, i919. serial No. 310,561.
New Haven, county of New Haven', State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements 1n Toy Vehicles,
of which the following is a full, clear, and
exact description.
This invention relates to toys, and more particularly to toys of that class termed construction toys, designed to be assembled to produce various different toy devices. The present invention pertains more particularly to the assemblage of these construction parts to produce a knoclrdown toy vehicle provided with a front and rear axle.
In my application, Serial No. 292,877, filed April 26, 1919, I have described and claimed a toy of this general type in which the parts are assembled to produce a) toy vehicle of the cart type provided with a single axle. The present application relates to the assemblage of these toy construction parts to produce, as above stated, a vehicle provided with front and rear axles.
One of the objects of the present invention is to furnish toy construction' parts which may be secured to a body member in various positions to produce a knockdown toy vehicle provided with afront and `rear axle having wheels mounted thereupon. Certain features of the invention, however, are not necessarilylimited to use in wheeled toys, since they are applicable with equal advantage to structures having runners, such as slides. 1 v
Another object of my inventionv is to provide toy construction parts of the type above indicated, which may be readily assembled to form a pivotal mounting for pivotally securing the front axle of the toy vehicle to its body member.
A further object ofmy invention is to moved.
Figs. 3 and 4 are plan and side views respectively of a portion' of the draft tongue and means for securing the same to the express wagon. l l
F 1g. 5 is an enlarged sectional View taken' on thev line 5 5 of 2;,and
Fig. 6 is a plan view of aboard or body member shown removed from the express wagon. f Y, In the accompanying drawing, I have illustrated the elements of my invention as assembled to construct a 'childs express wagon having a rectangular boxlikebody, but 1t will be apparent that these elements may be'assembledA to form the running gear for variousV types of wagons without depart# ing from the spirit of my invention.
I have designated by the numeral 10 a boardor body member upon the upper face of which is preferably secured a rectangular frame designated in its entire-cyby the numeral 11 and consisting of sid'eand end members secured together, while this frame 11 is secured to the body member 10 to form a boxlike body for my express wagon, however, the frame 11 forms no part of my invention herein described. 4,Theboard or body member 10 preferably has anumber of bolt holes 12 vformed therethrough is' spaced rel'a-l tion, and to the lower face of the member 10 arev secured the front and rear braclretsy 13 by means of bolts lewhich pass through' the bolt holes 12 and throughthe inwardly directed ears 15 of the brackets 13'. By pro'.l vi'dmg a plurality of bolt lio-les' through the body member, the brackets 13 may besen cured to the same in various positions. Eacl'' of the inwardly directed ears 1'5i is provided with a drill-hole 16 (seevF ig. adapted'1 toy receivev one. of the bolts 14. My toy vehicle is provided with arear axle 17 anda front axle 18, upon the opposite endsof whichV are mounted wheels 19' of any desired construc-v tion andv which may be secured to the axles in any desired manner, but inthe drawing, I have disclosed these wheels as retainedin place upon the axles by Cotter pins 20.4 The bracletsl areprovided to connect thelfroiit and rear axles to the body of my toy vehicle, and the rear', axle 17 is rigidly but remev# ably secured to the rearl brackets' 13 means of the U-shaped clips 21, the spaced legs of which have circular holes formed therethrough to snugly receiveL the axle 17 which may be inserted through the spaced legs of these clips, as shown in Fig. 1. The clips 21 are bolted to the lower flat face of the brackets 18 by threaded bolts 22 provided with the nuts 23. By the means just described, it will be seen that the rear axle 17 may be strongly and rigidly secured to the rear portion of the toy vehicle, and in order to prevent this axle from working lengthwise through the legs of the clips 21, I preferably provide a second U-shaped clip 211 having axle receiving holes formed through the spaced legs thereof similar to the clips 21, but the legs of the clip 24 are sufficiently close together to permit the same to be inserted between the legs of one of the clips 21, as shown in Fig. 2, and this clip 211 is preferably provided with a set screw 25 by means of which it may be rigidly clamped to the rear axle 17 to prevent the same from rotating and from shifting in a lengthwise direction. In order that the front axle 18 may be'pivotally secured to the forward portion of my toy vehicle, but one bracket 13 is rigidly secured to the forward portion of the body member 10, and to the lower face of this bracket is pivotally secured a clip 21 by means of a threaded bolt 22, and to prevent the front axle 18 from shifting in a lengthwise direction relatively to the clip 21, IA provide this axle with a clip 241 spaced between the legs of the clip 21 and secured to its axle by a set screw in the manner above described. In this manner it will be seen that very satisfactory means is provided for pivotally securing the front axle 18 to the forward portion of the toy vehicle.
In order to provide convenient means for securing a draft tongue to the front axle of my express wagon, I have provided the loop brackets 26 having a loop 26;l formed at one end thereof in order that the forward axle 18 may be inserted through this loop, and one of the brackets 26 is preferably mounted upon the axle 18 upon each side of the forward clip 21, as will be apparent from Fig. 1. The forward end of the loop brackets 2G are preferably secured to a draft tongue 27 by means of angle plates 28. One
of these angle plates may be secured to each side of the tongue 27 by a bolt 29 which passes through the tongue and through one legof each of the angle plates, while the opposite leg of each of these plates may be secured to one of the brackets 26 by a bolt 30. v
From the above description, when read in connection with the drawing, it will be apparent that I have provided a strong and durable toy vehicle, in which the parts forming the running gear may be quickly assembled and taken apart, when desired, and it will also be apparent that due to the numerous bolt holes formed in the body member 10, the parts forming the running gear of my toy vehicle may be assembled in various positions other than herein indicated, thereby permitting the child using this toy to exercise his ingenuity in assembling the parts of the same in various ways.
The construction parts herein disclosed, it will be understood, are so designed that they may be easily and quickly assembled to provide various different toy devices as explained in my copending application, Serial No. 281,970, filed March 11, 1919.
I do not claim broadly herein features broadly claimed in my application Serial No. 292,877 above mentioned.
