SHIELD FOR HAIR WAVING.

To all whom it may'concem:

Be it known that I, ZIVA PoriN, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Shield for Hair Waving, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a new and improved protecting device or shield adapted for use in conjunction with permanent hair waving devices, and one of the objects of the invention is to provide a device which may be conveniently applied to the hair adjacent the roots thereof, and which is so constructed that heat from the apparatus employed for treatin the hair cannot be projected against the sea p.

Other objects and aims of the invention, more or less specific than those referred to above, will be in part obvious and in part pointed out in the course of the following description of the elements, combinations, arrangements of parts and applications of principles, constituting the invention and the scope of protection contemplated Wlll be indicated in the appendedclaims.

In the accompanying drawing, wherein I have illustrated a preferred form of embodiment of my invention:

Figure 1 is a view in perspective illustratin the same.

Figure 2 is a plan view of one part of the device.

Figure 3 is a similar view of another part of the device; and

Figure 4 is a transverse sectional view showing the parts in operative position.

Referring now to the drawing, wherein similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the views thereof, the reference numeral 1 denotes an elongated strip of material, the same being preferably formed of a soft material, such for instance as felt.- This strip has an elongated slot 2, cut in the centre thereof, said slot, as shown, extending longitudinally of the strip.

Leading into the slot 2 from the exterior of the device from one of the lateral sides of the strip, near one end thereof, is a slot 3. The other part of the device comprises a similarly formed strip 4, preferably composed of a relatively hard heat resisting material, such as fibre or asbestos.- This part is likewise provided with an elongated slot 6, which extends longitudinally thereof, into which leads a slot 7, leading from one of the lateral sides of the part near one end thereof. This slot 7 likewise permits the hair to be inserted into the slot 6.

At this point it may be noted that my improved protecting-device or shield is adapted primarily to be used in COIIIIGCtlOIl'Wlth the apparatus disclosed in my co-pending application 297,764, said apparatus. being adapted to impart a permanent form or set to a Marcel wave.

In this operation a lock or tuft of hair is formed in the shape of a band or ribbon, as indicated at 8, in Figure 1, segregated from the remainder of the hair and subjected to the treatment.

In the use of my improved device the part I 1 is preferably positioned about the band or lock of hair 8, as indicated in Figure 1, by inserting said band of hair through the slot 3. The part 4 is next similarly positioned upon the band of hair by inserting the latter through the slot 7.

It will be noted that in positioning the part 4 upon the hair, its osition is reversed, that is to say, the slot 7 is at the end of the strand opposite to that of the slot 3. Thus it will be seen that there is a complete barrier interposed between the heating apparatus and the scalp, making it impossible for heat to be projected through the device to the scalp.

As many changes could be made in this I -material, and the other of a relatively hard heat resisting material, adapted to lie in superimposed relation, each of which is provided with an elongated slot, said slots having openings leading thereinto from the edges of the strip.

A device of the class described, comprising a plurality of elongated strips, each of which'is provided with a centrally disposed elongated slot, and the slot of each strip having an opening leading thereinto from the edge of the strip, said strips being 7 drawing shall be interpreted as illustrative adapted to be positioned about 'a lock of hair and to lie in superimposedrelation with the openings leading to the slots located in opposite ends of the device.

In a device of the class described, comprising in combination a plurality of elongated strips, each of which is provided with a longitudinally extended centrally disposed slot, each slot having an opening leading into one end thereof from an edge of the strip, each of said strips being adapted to be positionedabout a strand of hair so that said strands will occupy the slot thereof and said strips being adapted to lie. in so perimposed relation, one of said strips be- 15 ing formed of a soft fabric material, and the other of a relatively hard heat resisting material.
