RnUsCH- Linn, a citizen of the United States, residing yatV Huntington, in the county of Cabell and State of Wwest Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Directory or ndex Board; and l d o hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable othersskilled in the art to which it; appertains to make and use the same.

rlhis invention relates to a directory or index board.

It isaimed to provide in an article of this type wherein the display cards or panels are movable over others for insertion and removal, means to enable said insertion or removal without disturbing the 'arrange ment or otherwise interfering with: other display cards or panels of the directory or board. y

Another object is to provide in such an apparatus, card or panelretainersor holders provided with lugs' to limit insertion of the cards or panels and function dually to deflect an adjacent cardboard panel outwardly as it is removed.

It is further aimedto provide a construction accomplishing the result mentioned which is simple and inexpensive, and. caY pable of embodimentina holder consisting of a single blank or piece.l y

A still further object is to4 provide a novel construction of index studs and an attaching means, particularly utilizing pin and slot connections in association with springs to maintain the studs in display positions.

.Additional objects and advantages will become apparent from a consideration of the description following taken in connection with accompanying drawings illustrating one practical embodiment.

ln reducing the invention to practice, a base or back board is provided at 10 which may be made of wood, metal or another suitable material. The base 10 may be r`ec-v tangular forkexample and bordered by a frame 11 at its sides and ends,A andsecured thereto in any appropriate manner lor formed integral therewith, as preferred.

`The holders or retainers 12 may each be made in a single piece or blank of sheet metal and soldered, nailed or otherwise secured to the board 10. a plurality of leaves 19 are struck inwardly from the Walls 17. The Walls 16 and 17 are preferably of sheet metal and accordingly the leaves 19 will be resilient or springs.

As the heads 22 are of such size that they may be inserted into and Withdrawn from the lrey hole slots, the index studs may be readily applied to or removed from the slots 18. l/Vhen the heads 22 have been passed through the slots 18 and disposed Within the recess of the frame, said heads may be lowered s'o as to dispose the pins 21 in the smaller portions of the slots 18 With the heads 22 overlapping` the inner surface of the Wall 16 and in engagement with the leaves 19,. the latter serving to trictionally bind against the heads 22 and the heads 22 against the Walls 16, whereby plates 20 may be releasably held in place, and particularly so that they cannot accidentally rotate. As they cannot accidentally rota-te, the plates 20 will be maintained with the letters of the alphabet or other display matter iii-proper reading position.

To cooperate With the modified form of base 21 lhave provided the button 25 from the back Wall of which is stamped or pressed the attaching stud 26 including the oppositely disposed arms 27. rhe button has. its edge bent to provide a flange 28 'between which and the back vot the button al display platefmay be located. 'The vindex buttons nay be inserted through' the round part of thekey hole slot 24 and dropped into the elongated portion thereof, with its laterally extending arm 27 engaging the rear of the base 21, whereby the button will be held against accidental displacement.

As merelyv` preferred embodiments ofthe invention have been illustrated and described, it is to be understood that changes in the details maybe resorted to provided they fall Within the spirit and scope of the invention.

Having 'thus described the". invention, what l claim is 1. In a sign, firsty and second Walls, the first mentioned Wall having a slot therethrough, an index member provided vvith a pin to 'enter said slot, a securing head on said pin, and resilient means extending from the other wall and .engaging said head to maintain the index member against displacement.

2. ln a sign, said sign having a plurality of slots, index members selectively applicable to said slots for the Apurpose specified, and resilient means to coact with the index members to retain them against displacement.

ln a sign, apluralityoi' display :panels, means removably receiving saidV panels, a plurality oft slots adjacent one edge of said sign, one ot said slots being` in Aalignment with each of said panels, indexfstuds selectively applicable to said slots, and resilient means engaging said studs to prevent their accidental displacement.

t. ln a sign provided With a slot, anindex member havingyya shank to engage in said slots and resilient means to engage the shank to maintain the index member in active position. y

5. A sign comprising a body of metal having longitudinal spaced parallel flanges extending from one face thereof, said lianges being spaced apart and in opposed relation to form pairs for receiving panels, lugs inclining outward from said body and between pairs of flanges and adjacent the ends thereof, said lugs forming stops torpanels received between one pair of opposed anges and delectors for panels received by an adjacent pair of flanges, slots adjacent one edge of said body, one of said slots being in alignment with each pair of said flanges, and index studs to be selectively received by said slots.

6. A sign comprising a body of metal having longitudinal spaced parallel flanges extending i from one face thereof, said Hanges being spaced apart and in opposed relation to form pairs for receiving panels,

lugs inclining outward from said body and between pairs of anges and adjacent the ends thereof, said lugs forming stops for v:

panels received between ene pair of opposed flanges and delectors for said panels received by an adjacent pair of flanges, slotsadjacent one edge of said body, one of said slots being in alinement with each pair of said flanges, studs selectively received by said slots, and resilient means to hold said studs against displacement.
