NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.,
THOMAS D. LEONEARD, OF WAGO, TEXAS, ASSIGNOR OF TWO-THIRDS HIS RIGHT TO JOHN D. JOHNSON AND BENJ. O. DRURY, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN COTTON-PRESSES.
Speciticationforming part of Letters Patent No. 144,775, dated November 18, 1873 application led June 7, 1873.
` of reference marked thereon.
Figure l ofthe drawings is a representation of my press in side elevation. Fig. 2 isa longitudinal vertical section, and Fig. 3 is a plan view, of the same. Figs. 4 and 5 show modications in the construction of the bottom of the bale-box.
This invention has relation to cotton and hay presses; and consists in the novel construction and arrangements of the parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
A represents the bed-frame, having two beams or rails, upon which a frame, B, moves upon wheels or rollers a c. Near one endof the bed-frame A, on each4 side, is a standard, O, and in the two standards C O a rightand left-hand screw, D, has its bearings. This screw passes through and moves two blocks, E E, so as to come closer together or farther apart, according to the direction in which the screw is revolved. From each block E extend two levers, G G, one on each side. These levers are pivoted to the blocks, and thelevers which extend in one direction are pivoted, at their outer ends, to a block, H, made stationary in the end of the frame B, while the levers extending in the opposite direction are pivoted to a block, H, which moves uponv 0n or attached to the metal band d, and resting upon posts K K on the frame B.
The bottom J ot' the box J is made part of a circle on the outer side, and made attachable to and detachable from the block H.
The means for attaching the bottom J to the block H may either be hooks, as shown in Fig. 1, or a rectangular-headed bolt through the block, passing through a slotted plate in the bottom, as shown in Fig. 4, or by a tenon and screw, as shown in Fig. 5, or any other suitable means.
The bale-box J having, in a vertical position, been illed and packed, it is turned to a horizontal position, and its bottom J fastened to the block H, the other end of the box resting upon rollers j' f in the frame B. The screw D is now revolved in the proper direction to force the blocks E E together, when it will be seen that the box J is forced in one direction toward the follower I, and, at the same time, the frame B, with the follower, is moved in the opposite direction, the follower and bale-box meeting each other at equal speed and distance in packing a bale.
A press of this construction is equally applicable t-o press hay, wool, hides, tobacco, straw, and other articles.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination of the sectional box J, the detachable bottom J, and block H with the pivoted levers G attached thereto, and arranged to operate'in the manner shown and set forth.
2. The cotton-press having the main frame A, movable press-frame B with follower I, movable bale-box J, screw D, blocks E, levers G, and block H H', all constructed and arranged to operate substantially as and for the purposes herein sct forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS DUNLAP LEONEARD.
