Description

E. WINKLER CHILDS VEHICLE Filed Mal".
1N V ENTOR E. M//h/er ATTRNEY Patented Mar. 6, 19123.
UNITED STATES tama PATENT EDMUND WINKLER, OF BROOKLYN, YORK, ASSIGNOR OF ON`E-ALF TO `SADIE HAJDU, BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
CHILDS VEHICLE.
.Application led March 7, 1922.
To all whom-t may conce/m: l
Be itknown that I, EDuUND WINKLER, a citizen of Czecho-Slovakia, residing Vat Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Childrens Vehicles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to toy vehicles the main object being to'provide a toy which is both amusing and instructive and also to provide means for exercising the limbs of a child in a manner pleasant to him.
These and other objects will become apparent in the description below in which characters of reference refer to like-named parts in the drawing.
Referring briey, to the drawing Figure 1 represents a side elevational view of the to.
ligure 2 is a front elevational view of the same. v
Figure 3 is a top plan View of the front swivel yoke connected to the body brace.
Figure 4 is a side View of the rear axle and shows the means for journalling the same beneath the legs.
Describing the drawing more in detail, the numeral 1 represents the broad rounded back of an animal, in this instance a dog, having a head 2, upstanding ears 3, and fore and rear legs 4 and 5 respectively. These animals are of the usual type having a fur-like coat and stuffed with excelsior or the like.
Hind legs 5 are rigidly connected to the body while the fore legs 4 are detached from it in the region of the chest a portion of which, indicated by 6, occurs below the horizontal division. The contacting surfaces of both the body and fore leg members are leach provided with a metallic plate '7 which forms a broad flat supporting surface for the animal. v
Ayoke 8 secured between the legs 4 projects slightly below the latter and forms a bearing for pedal shaft 9 which has retaining collars 10 securely pinned thereto. Each end of the pedal shaft 9 has a square exten sion which receives a pedal crank 11 hav ing a foot pad 12 swivelly attached to its outer end. The pedal `crank at the other end of the shaft extends therefrom in the opposite direction.
Serial No. 541,730.
A rubber tired wheel 13 is fixed to shaft 9 and forms a means of locomotion for the toy when the pedal cranks are manipulated.
An additional means of securing the shaft 9 to the fore legs 4 is provided by wires 14 which extend upwardly into said legs and are slightly curved at the upper end and are wound about the shaft 9 after the fashion of a coil spring and as illustrated in Figure 4.
A vertical steering rod 15 fixed to yoke 8 extends upwardly and is rotatable within the sleeve 17 secured to upper' plate 7 and within the body of the animal. Handle bar 16 pinned to the upper end of rod 15 is adapted to rotate or swivel the yoke 8, when manipulated.
A pair of rear wheels 1S mounted on an axle 19 are secured to the hind legs 5 by wires 2O encircling the said axle as indicated by numeral 21. These wires 2O extend upwardly within the hind legs and are then bent into a horizontal direction from whence they aretwisted about each other and encircle sleeve 17 at their other end.
A child when using the toy seats itself upon the back of the animal., placing the feet upon the pedal foot pads 12 alternately pushing on each.
IVhen a change in direction of travel is desired, handle bar 16 is turned into the required direction thereby facing wheel 13 in a new direction without retarding the forward travel of the toy.
It is to be understood that certain changes such as the use of various types and sizes of animals may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
I claim:
A vehicle toy comprising an animal body having rotatable fore legs, a yoke between said legs having a shaft rotatable therein. a wheel in said yoke, a vertical steering rod secured to said yoke, a sleeve in the animal body adapted to receive said steering rod,
a handle bar on said rod, an axle, pair of wheels on said axle, a twisted wire encircling said sleeve and extending back wardly downward and securing the axle to the hind legs substantially as described, and means for propelling the toy.
In witness whereof, I aiiix my signature.
EDMUND WINKLER.
