FEEDING DEVICE FOR WINNOVTING MACHINES.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Jens MADSEN IIEN- RIKSEN, a subject of the King of Denmark, residing at Slagelse, in the Kingdom of Denmark, have invented new and useful Improvements in Feeding Devices for Winnowing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to a feeding device for winnowing machines. In the commonly existing feeding devices for winnows, the feed to the winnow is regulated by the position of feed roller being varied in such a manner that the area of the discharge opening is altered. The demand for fine adjustment fixes rather narrow limits, however, in respect to how much the pins or ribs of the feed roller may project beyond the circumference of the roller. Besides, there may appear difficulties in the feed, when the discharge area is decreased, especially if coarser impurities, such as stalks, straw or the like, be present in the material.
These drawbacks are avoided completely in the present invention by the adjustable feed roller being arranged to swing in relation to a rotary roller with fixed bearings close to the bottom opening of the feed hopper or a rod or the like fixed there in such a manner that the area of the discharge opening remains unchanged whether the feed roller be adjusted for a greater or smaller feed, so that the quantity of material fed will not be dependent on the area of the discharge opening but only on the position of the swinging roller.
The invention, in two different examples of constructing the same, is illustrated on the drawing, where Fig. 1 shows a vertical cross-section of the feed hopper,
Fig. 2 the same viewed from one end Fig. 3 a portion of. the same, viewed from above,
Figs. 4 and 5 vertical cross-sections of a feed hopper, where the rollers are arranged otherwise than in the construction shown in Figs. 1 to 3, the rollers being shown in two different positions relatively to one another.
In the construction shown in Figs. 1 to 3, 1 is the feed hopper and'2 a roller secured to a shaft 5 which is journalled in bearings at the end walls of the hopper and placed close to the outlet from the hopper, Outas side the roller 2 there is provided a roller 3 secured to a shaft 16 which is journalled in flat end plates 4, revoluble freely about the shaft 5 of the roller 2, Fig. 1, 6 is a curved wall fixed on the feed hopper 1, below the out-let of the latter, and 7 an equally curved wall placed in firm connection with the end pieces 4 andshaped and arranged so as to fit tightly against the screen 6 and so as to slide below the latter, when the roller 3 is swung downward from the position shown in Fig. 1 in full lines. 'After being carried forward by the roller 3, the material to be winnowed slides down to the winnow along a wall 8 forming, in combination with a wall 22, an outlet hopper for the material fed for ward.
The shaft of the roller 2 is rotated in suitable manner, and the rotation of this shaft is transmitted, by means of gear wheels 9 and 10, Figs. 2 and 3, to the roller 3, so that the direction of rotation of the latter is opposite that of the roller 2.
Th roller 3 is fitted with ribs 11, battens or the like, while the roller 2 may be fitted with pins 12 or the like.
The roller 2 serves to convey th material towards the roller 3 being the feed roller proper and carrying the material forward, in larger or smaller quantities, to the winnow. When the roller 3 is adjusted into the position shown, in full lines, in Fig. 1, it
conveys a relatively small quantity of ma-' terial, while it takes more along when set lower in relation to the roller 2.
The adjustment of the roller 3 may be effected in any manner. There may, for instance be provided teeth 13, engaging a gear wheel 14 or a worm, on the end pieces 4 at their upper edges concentric with the roller 2. lVhenthe roller 3 is to be adjusted, the gear wheel 14 is rotated, in one or the other direction, by means of a crank handle not shown on the drawing, whereby the roller 3 is either lifted or lowered in relation to the roller 2.
Instead of the roller 2, there may be provided a rod, located along the lower aperture of the feed hopper and serving as a shaft for the end. pieces 4 to rotate about.
In the manner of constructing the feeding device shown in Figs. 4 and 5, the feed roller proper 3 is fixed in position and rotatable only about its own axis, while the auxiliary roller 2 is journalled in arms or plane end pieces 4, rotatable about th shaft 16 of the roller 3. The shaft 5 of the roller 2 is con nected to a wall 18, which may be shifted up or down in slots 19 in fixtures 2O fastened on the feed hopper 1 When the rollers occupy the position shown in Fig. 4, only a small quantity of material is fed to the winnow, while in the position of the rollers shown in Fig. 5, a larger quantity of material is conveyed.
Having now particularly described and ascertained-the nature of my said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is 1. In a feeding, device for winnowing niachines; the combination with a feed hopper of a pair of I'evoluble feed rollers having a fixed distance from each other, and means for altering the position of said pair of feed rollers relatively to the discharge opening of said hopper, whereby the quantity of material fed by said rollers may be adjusted.
2. In a feeding device for winnowing machines, the combination with a feed hopper, of a pair of revoluhle feed rollers havlng a .fixed distance from eachother, one of said feed rollers having a fixed position relatively to the discharge opening of said hopper while the other feed roller is adapted to be oscillated about the axis of said first named feed roller, means for oscillating said oscillatory feed roller, whereby the position of said pair of feed rollers relatively to the discharge opening of said hopper may be altered.
