CHALK HOLDER.

To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, AN'ri-ronY LEONE, a citizen of the United States, residing'at Greensburg, in the county of lVestmoreland and State'of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chalk Holders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the ac companying drawings.

An object of the invention is to provide a holder of this character capable of being readily applied to any pool or billiard table I and at any point desired.

Another object of the invention is to provide aholder of this character embodying a housing in which the holder is normally disposed, with means disposed within the housing in spaced relation to the holder for holding the holder therein, said means being movable within the housingto automatically return the holder in its position within the housing upon release of the holder by the user.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a chalk holder of this character including a housing having a chalk container disposed within the housing, the container having a weight connected thereto, said conbut prevented from disconnection housing by the weight.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the improved construcfrom the tion and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more particularly described, fully claimed and'illustrated inthe accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of a chalk holder constructed in accordance with an embodiment of the invention, and showing the holder attached to the table;

Figure 4 is a perspective view of the chalk holder.
Referring to the drawings, 5 designates a housing consisting of a tubular member bent in accordance with the contour of the sides or ends of a billiard or pool table A, the housing being open at both ends. The, upper end 6 of the housing is internally threaded for a purpose to be hereinafter described.
In connection with the housing 5, a socket member 7 is provided, said member having an upper bowl portion 8 and a reduced lower portion 9, the lower portion being provided exteriorly with threads of a quick detachable type adapted to engage the threads of the housing 5. A shoulder 10 is formed to limit movement of the socket member within the housing. It will be noted that the extremity of the end portion 9 is provided with an annular flange 11 which extends inwardly of said end portion for the purpose of obstructing to a certain degree the passage of the socket. The upper edge 12 of the socket is inwardly beveled, while surrounding the upper edge of the bowl is a plate 13. This plate extends on both sidesof the socket and is relatively long, the end face 14 of the plate being formed in accordance with the contour of the edge of the table, so that a portion of the plate extends over the edge of the table A and a portion engages the edge. In this way the socket may be attached to the table flush with the surface of the bottom of the table and yet permit the socket to project beyond the edge of the table. The plate is made relatively thick so as to merge with the upper portion of the bowl,

The bottom 17 of the container is provided with a recess 22 in the bottom of which an opening 23 is provided. The sides 18 and 19 ofthe container are provided with a slot 24 which permits the container to yield in order to frictionally engage a block of chalk, the opening between the sides 18 and 19 being provided for the insertion of the tip of the cue. The top 21 is made in the form of a circular plate considerably larger in diameter than the bottom of the holder, the diameter of the plate corresponding substantially to the diameter of the bowl and having its periphery beveled as at 25 for engagement with the beveled portion 12 of the bowl 8. In this way the container is suspended within the bowl in in spaced relation to the walls of the bowl and-yet may be readily removed when desired. The outer-face of the plate 21 is provided with a finger stall 26 by means of which the container may be instantly rewithin the housing at all times.

In theapplication of the holder to the table, the plate, as previously described, is
engaged with the edge of the table at the point desired, screws being passed through the openings 15 in the plate. A clamp 30 is then placed around the end portion 9 of the socket and secured at its ends to the outer face of the table. A. second clamp 31 is provided, said clamp being substantially U-shaped and having its bight portion 32 secured to the side of the table adjacent the lower end of the housing. An adjustable clamping member 33 is passed through the arms of the clamp adj acentthe bight portion thereof, so as to bind the jaws of the clamp on the lower portion of the housing. By this means it is possible to dispose the housing in spaced relation to the table, so as not to mar the table and yet permit the housing to conform to the curvature of the sides of the table.
When it is desired to chalk the cue, the user places his finger in the finger stall 26 so as to remove the container from the socket 7 against the resistance of the weight 29. The container may then be moved a distance corresponding to the length of the cord 27, or in other words, until the ball 29 comes in contact with the annular flange 11. Upon contact of the beveled edge 25 of the plate 21 with the beveled portion 12 of the bowl, the downward movement of the weight is arrested and the container thus positioned properly within the socket.
r'rom the foregoing it will be readily seen that this invention provides a novel chalk holder capable of being applied to any billiard or pool table regardless of its shape of construction and wherein the container may be automatically returned to its housing a chalk container movably disposed within one end of the housing, a flexible member connected to the container, and a weight 1 carried by the flexible member within the housing for normally holding the container within the housing, said weight being arranged to permit removal of the container from the housing and to prevent disconnection of the container from the housing. 7

A chalk holder comprising a housing, a socket member carried by one end of the housing, one end of said socket member having an inwardly projecting flange, a container movably-disposed within the socket member, a flexible member connected to the container and extending through the socketmember into the housing, a weight carried by the cable for normally holding the container within the socket, said weight being movable longitudinally of the housing into contact. with the flange upon removal of the holder from the socket.
A chalk holder comprising a tubular housing open at both ends, a socket member detachably connected to one end of thehousing, said socket member being provided with means for connection to a. support, the upper edge of the socket member being beveled, a chalk container having one end thereof engaged with the end of the socket member, one side portion of said container being open to permit access to the chalk, and a flexible member and weight connected to the signature. 7
